Usually open to all interested parties.

Coops are like playing single-player missions, but with real pilots. The mission usually includes an objective as well as enemy resistance.

I hear they are fun.

Open to anyone. The online wars require that you be signed up, but sometimes if you ask, the host will allow someone not signed up to join as a sort of trial offer to see if you like it. From then on though you should be signed up.

Try coops some and if you like them and think you might like something a little more involved then go for the online wars. These are better if you join a squadron and have voice comms. IMHO these are the best online scenarios, the most immersive.

Coop is great, it's about all I fly. You have an objective and are need to try to accomplish it without dying, or you are out of the mission until it ends. I much prefer this to the deathmatch mentality of regular servers. The only problem is it's harder to find a good game, but when you do the enjoyment factor is much higher. I run a late night server every Friday at 11PM PST. Feel free to contact me for joining info at the link below if you want to fly with us.
