How do you engage the enemy in this game?

I have tried to get position behind an enemy fighter and they always seem to be faster than me. I can never get close enough for my guns.

Any tips are appreciated./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I am flying the Bf109.

Remember this:

The harder you pull on your stick the more E you will lose. You turne better when not horizontal.

If you really want to accel at simulated air-to-air, Fighter Combat by Robert Shaw is a must-read.

Someone can say "practice, practice, practice", but if your tactics are not sound, you will only be developing bad habits. There is a good deal of theory in air-to-air, so read up. The guys shooting you down have read it.

He's right, there is some bookwork that can help. I learned a lot from reading articles at simhq. http://www.simhq.com/_air/acc_library.html
There's enough reading to melt your eyes there.

Apart from that, Dragon hit the nail right on the head. You are going to be spanked when you first start, then you'll read, then you'll practice, then you'll get spanked again, but you will at least see yourself getting better.

I haven't seen anybody online that doesn't get shot down, so I like to measure success by how many people I shoot down. Or how many times I make it back to base. Or how many times I run out of ammo BEFORE being shot down.

Trust me, though, when you start putting some basic maneuvers into action, and you see that perfect shot lining up, then sparks from your bullets cover his airplane and then BAM his enginestartsburnnnnn

That's a good feeling, and well worth the effort.

Get a copy of Mark Shot's Shoot to Kill especially if you wish to fly the 109. He has some good explanations on energy fighting.

Maybe try AOTK [Art of the Kill]?

It's written for Falcon 3.0/Hornet/MiG-29/FalconOFT/FalconGold but the guns section should still be helpfull. It comes with a few vids to watch as well.

I'll try and dig up my copy to get the authors names.

Yep. Good advice and a great book. Read book. Practice. Read some more. Practice. Read some more. Practice. I think you know how the rest goes. Lol

Don't be so quick to chase...better to shoot and fly past.
