...but will we have the option to surrender? After taking grievous damage, blowing ballast and surrendering wouldn't be an unreasonable choice in SHIII, would it?

Only if I can set explosives on my way topside and get to see British sailors board my U-Boat to get blown up. Muhahahaaaa.

Ooh, nasty - but think what the other sailors will do to you after you deviously blow their friends up!

Surrender would be a nice option, but to be honest if you're captured you're as good as dead anyway, as far as the war effort is concerned.

I suppose you could be captured, and the vessel you're stored in then gets torpedoed, and you get rescued by another U-boat... that's quite inplausable though.

I would hope there is an abandon ship feature, the guys with the manual should know. To me thats the version of surrender i will be using, as its sinking http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, I realize that surrendering in a game would basically be the same as dying, but for immersion's sake, I think it'd be nice to at least have some options. Assuming I survive, I'd also like to have the choice of how I end the war, similar to what was in the poll a while back...

Remember the great Wall of Honor in SH1. It listed whether your skipper was KIA or POW. And the. devs are big fans of SH1, so maybe...

I try to think as a real captain, and crew's safety can't be out of my mind; so, when my boat is close to sinking, I believe that giving to my brave sailors a little survival's hope is the best thing to do.

It was a captain's duty to always go down with his boat. (It is so at least in the Japanese Navy [was]) The Titanic too.

A real captain who is a patriot and has a strong sense of duty will ensure that his younger sailors survive but he himself, and his ship are not taken by the enemy.

Not sure if Ubootwaffe worked as you say.
It seems that captains, and other people in conning tower or control room, had a better survival rate than other subsailors, often entrapped far from the exit.
But you are right about the boat, it shouldn't fall in enemy hands; anyway, as for other combat units, existed a self destruction procedure.
