and my first thought on opening it and looking at the handy reference sheet for commands was ROFL!!!

90% of the actons are - "USer Defined"
Good intro - shows this is just not another run-of-the-mill simple sim.

Any advice for a first time newbie?

(Apart from stick DVD in drive and install obviously http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

I know many will disagree but I say -Start with easy settings and work your way up....

I absolutly agree with ytareh. I do not suggest having torque, engine manigement, overheats, or wind and turbulance on right off the bat. Also, to start out, uncheck realistic gunnery.

As for mapping keys, do whatever makes sense to you. If you have questions on what those functions do, me or anyone else would be able to help ya out.

But I definitly agree that at first, start off on easy settings. I don't know if you are new to flight sims or not, but it is not like a FPS where you master it easily. But the advantage this game has over other games is replayability. I hope you enjoy it.

Lastly - Buy PE-2 addon, but backup your original EXE's. It sets you up for a BIG japanese planeset addon coming real soon.

Jump in the deep end and paddle http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Try to play the game with the most diffucult settings as possible.
Get a good joystick and map your keys however it makes sense to you.
Have fun and enjoy this game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As bad as that looks...sometimes its for the best. Everyone has different controller configurations and sometimes its worth it to work out your own configurations. They still should have done it but its not all bad.

Probably best to get started on the basics and start programming in the rest later. We can offer some suggestions and give advice on whatever features you'd like. We're surprisingly helpful...just tell us what you'd like to know. Spend some time flying offline before you jump right in http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The game is huge and it keeps expanding...its a bit daunting but its completely worth it!

I suggest you start with normal settings.... only make sure the lights for limitted ammo and no icons are off in the difficulty settings, forget easy..... Keep the cockpit open.. or at least switchable between locked and unlocked...... an open pit (By cycling shft+f1 you can go through the views). If you prefer a closed pit after you go up a few times and get the hang of it with an open pit then close it and go for it.... and dont worry about shooting anything for the first week. I know it will be hard.. but just concentrate on flying..... offline from the main menu select multiplayer&gt;create new server&gt;dogfight then select any mission.... When you get in there you will be alone and on the ground..... start your engine and try to take off.... when you crash hit escape..... you will see an option to refly... select it and do that again and again until you can take off and land proficiently..... it wont be easy.... Note that you can select any plane you want..... I recommend you start out with a stable plane like a P-40, P-47, one of the Las.... or a Zero.... or whatever you want but whater plane you puck.. stick with it until you can geta good handle on the process. This may seem like a waste.. but I gaurantee you that the week you spend training offline to get used to the basic flight models of the sim will pay dividends later. There will betime enough for shooting.... Ofd course if you can get the hang of the take off and landing thing in one day then just start using the Quick mission builder to practice under more.... strenuous conditions.... In the beginning fly against inferior planes and rookie AI.... when you get the hang of things then begin to up the challenge by changing the AI level and makeing the planeset more competitive. On our website is a list of commands that I recommend all new pilots set... you can use whatever you like of course.. but we like to start our rookies out with these settings:

Recommended Essential Control Functions in Forgotten Battles
1)Wing Fold/Extend*
2)Toggle Chocks*
3)Arrester Hook*
4)Seat Raise*
5)Canopy open/close**
6)Padlock Enemy Air**
7)External Padlock Enemy Air**
8)Padlock Enemy Ground
9)Radiator
10)Map
11)Toggle Speedbar
12)Drop Tanks
13)WEPS-MGs,Cannon,Bombs,Rockets
14)Navigation Lights (Cockpit/Landing and wingtip smoke recommended also)
15)Gear Manual Raise/Lower
16)Rudder,elevator & aileron trim
17)Supercharger & Fuel Mixture
18)Seperate engine start (Reqired for the P-38 aircraft)
19)Trim-Elevator & Rudder primarily... aileron if possible as well.
* Required for carrier Ops
**Not required but recommended-occasionally disabled in missions.

Please keep in mind that things like engine start & bail out are a given... thats why I dont mention them here. Plus this is just a recommendation......

Lastly... remember the only dumb question is the unasked one.... so feel free to ask here for any help.. and ignore any mimtards who might flame you or respond in an unfriendly way... we are a microcosm of the world and we have our share of jerks.

Wow. Thanks for all your responses. Some awesome advice. I have 'some' experience with flight sims... I managed to do a carrier take-off on full real on my first go (once I figured out I had to map a key o wheel chocks)
I am slightly in awe of the game atm, amazing planes that I want to fly, Only flown a couple really briefly... I like the LA and the Il-2 at the Moment.

I want to concentrate on just one plane but there areso many cool planes to fly!!

Thanks for the advice on the multiplayer solo missions... Iwas wondering how I could easily practise take-offs.

On overload at the moment but having a heap of fun.

P.S. I'm in love with the fly-by view http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Welcome aboard mate. There are some very helpful characters on these boards so never be afraid to ask. You are in for a treat. I envy your position somewhat as the discovery of all the things that make this game great are ahead of you.

Cheers

Oh and I was fascinated with the flyby view too when I first got this game.

Hi Chisanga,

Welcome to Da Game, yeah THE Game. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

After working out how to take off, I spent days and days (and days) just FLYING. No combat, just practicing Immelmans, Hammerheads and other aerobatics. Great memories, wide-eyed in wonder. I'd anaylse my tracks and loved the fly-by too.

If you start with easier settings, only stay there for a day or two. Get maxed out with the flight settings as soon as poss.

And remember that there's a Full Mission Builder awaiting your creativity.

Bon Voyage. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Andy's Map Tours are a response to the requests from new pilots for missions where they can practice take-offs and landings unhindered by enemy aircraft and AAA with all airfields friendly and all flyable aircraft selectable. The maps are Online 4 Mountain, Gulf of Finland, Berlin, Normandy, and Online8 Island.

Chisanga, congrats on the new purchase, and welcome!

If you ahven't discovered it already, this is not an easy sim, easpecially for someone brand new. However, once you get the hang of things, it is ENORMOUSLY rewarding.

Also, the polish of this game is second to none in it's genre. Period.

Remember Street Fighter? The beat em up game? There`s the medium boss called Sagat and then there`s the final boss called MBison.

In this game you see,you have not two or three bosses. You have over thousand bosses to beat online.Be sure to learn situational awareness from the start.I`m one of the bosses aswell.Let`s see if you can meet me some time. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Welcome Chisanga! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I know I'm going to make Steve_V blush here but click on Steve's weblink banner to www.airwarfare.com (http://www.airwarfare.com)

It is without a doubt the best resource you could want for starting out in this sim.

Cheers!

Wow. You guys are really helpful. Thank you. I've checked out a lot of sites and there is a great deal of good info out there.
I'm progressing well... I can take of all the time and am getting better at landing although I tend to come ina bit too fast.

How can you all concentrate on just one plane!! Tehre are so many great ones, i'm in a 109 phase now after loving la-5's and il-2's.

Tried going up against 2 beaufighters for the first time and it was really hard to get behind them for time enough to shoot. Guess it's back to bombers for a while again.

Spent over an hour watching all the tracks that came with the game last night.... so cool.

I myself due to hand size use the stick only for manuevering, all other commands even firing guns is done from the keyboard......To do that, really took mapping it out so things were simple to remember yet also did not allow for accidents.......If you want a starting point, here is how mine is laid out below (copy your user\doe\settings.ini file, place this info into the original and then look at it in the sim under "controls" to see how it all lays out);

Spent over an hour watching all the tracks that came with the game last night.... so cool. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Try a few manuvors out high a high or low YO-YO and try to approach any bomber from any other angle other than straight behind their six. High and Low Yo-Yos are great when intercepting bombers when you are the same altitude and perpendicular to them in your approach. This will allow you to make a run at them for up above or from underneath.
