i thought i would pass this story on .. when i was 14 ( 24 yrs ago) i got a b-24j tamiya model... at my dads work was a man (mark)who sometimes had his work featured in milatary modelers magazine.. my dad gave him my modele to prep for me by taking a dremal tool and making the plastic so thin that when pushed out it apears to have meen hit by a 20mm or the exit of a mg round ,flak etc the twisting by heat of the no.2 propeller to feather position hole and cracking of plexiglass a beutiful job took him many weeks ,i got it back and spent well over a month airbrushing this plane inside and out, zinc chromate and all smoke streaks and oil streaks were the appropriat place where hits were made it took me near 2 months to paint and assymble all this ..also where my dad worked( a aircraft mod center in san antonio) there worked a old b-24 j tail gunner, so on a saturday my dad took me down to meet him when i was done with the model, i showed him my model .. he stared at it for a min or so and a few tears welled up in his eyes being young i didnt know what to do so i said he should have it .. he shook his head no , so i said please.. he stood for a second then turned holdin my model almost like a baby and walked off.. mark who had been so impressed by my work was going to shoot it and send it in to milatary modeler magazine never got to shoot it and i never saw it again,i only made a me-262 a little while later and have never made one since

Nice models.

Two (dumb?) questions.

1. Never seen a D-520 before. Whose mark is this?

2. For some reason I thought the Avenger had two guns in the ball turret. Is this a varient or is my memory finally going?

Beautiful work though.

So what ya trying to do tenmmike make me cry too!

Very nice modeling for sure above. I never took that much time with them when I was young. I would take electric motors and put in them with battery packs, then fire them up all the while hanging them out my 2 story window on a fishing pole and make them land an take off in our dirt driveway. I had a B-17 once had all four engines running. It had enough power to actually taxi on its own on my wood floor. LOL Most of them just hung from the ceiling though from fishing line aswell.

Answering some Qs. The antenna wires are made of remaining molding trees. Just melting one overneath a candle and soon as it becomes soft stretching it. It seem to get a better effect to let them in original grey than paint the black.

The models are 1/48

F4U-1 Bird Cage
D-520

Great stuff Kimura - thanks for posting
you've made a nice job of painting and presenting all of those.
i particularly like your two avengers - i think avengers make great display pieces - when painted right.
Did you think of recreating a square of carrier deck instead of grass for the avengers or corsair BTW ?

I bought a tamiya spitifre mk 1 the other week with the intention of making a display piece - i think it must use most of the same pieces as the two spit models you have.

out of interest -did you make those bases out of something or are they sold for use specifically as bases for models?

sorry - but i couldn't resist answering these:

not sure what you mean by mark, but the D-520 is the Dewoitine D-520 and was generally considered France's best fighter plane during the Battle of France. Unfortunately however it didn't get into production quick enough therefore there were very few G/C's equipped with it during the battle, the mainstay of the fighter force being the Morane MS 401 (or 406 -something like that) the D-520 was france's only fighter that was considered a match for the german 109's.

- 2. For some reason I thought the Avenger had two
- guns in the ball turret. Is this a varient or is my
- memory finally going?

i think there are some Avengers with two guns ni the turret - unless my memory is going too ( quite possible!/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

Use a smaller apperture (bigger f number) and longer exposure (1/30th instead of 1/128th???)

Sorry, by mark I meant manufacturer. Thanks for the ID. That would make a cool plane for the European Theatre maps that are coming out. Since Oleg and crew are putting Normandy 'on the map' so to speak, (and IMO this is hardley a 'Forgotten Battle') it would be nice to see some 'Forgotten Planes' for this map.
