Hi all,

Ray Holmes was a Battle of Britain Hurricane pilot who rammed a Dornier 17 bomber over London when his ammunition ran out.

He was interviewed a couple of years ago just before he died and was asked about this event. He replied that he was just doing his job and could not appreciate the fuss.

He represents a lost and modest generation... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I just watched a documentary on the ramming event on Sky, one of the Doc channels, was quite entertaining programme, what a man!

Indeed. I was surprised he survived the incident. Definitely a hero of the battle. I doubt the Dornier crew much appreciated his actions, though.

I don't know if it's the same guy, but a hurricane pilot brought down a bomber that was going for Buck House, and he bailed out, landing in the grounds. The King detained the pilot for afternoon tea before allowing him to get back to his squadron.
