Minimum? when the enemy plane fills your view http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but you should try to hit them at your convergence distance which is whatever you've set it at, its less of an issue with planes that have nose mounted weapons but with wing mounted guns firing to close might lead to you completely missing and certainly won't bring your maximum fire power to a single point, it will dilute it.

Against fighters: 200 meters or less (about 600 feet).

Against bombers: about 350 meters (about 1000 feet, something more).

Wing mounted weapons have maximum efficiency at convergency range, and good efficiency at 50 meters under or above the set value.
More distance between the actual target and the set convergency range causes almost zero damage, or just scrapes (you could get a lucky hit, anyway).
Learn the value the distance judging by the size of the target related to the ring(s) of your sight. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Normal view for shooting under "normal" circumstances, close-in for attacks from 6o clock.
I barely fire in wide view, just on unexpected opportunities.

Convergence: 150m for early fighters, for BnZ (high relative speed) like in FW or F4U I switch to 300m
