I heard that that saying came from WWII when fighter aircraft in the pacific carried 9 yards of ammunition on a belt. When someone cam home to the carrier and shot all their bullets, they went "the whole nine yards." Can anyone verify this?

Thats very interesting. I always thought it had to do with football, even though nine is not a very significant football number.
