View Full Version : UFOs spotted on Multiplayer last night...I think

Ventured into multiplayer again last night (wanted to show some friends how much fun it is to fly around looking for small black dots only to be destroyed by some other plane you didn't know was right behind you!) and a strange thing happened.

When I played on the greatergreen server everything ran fine (except for the fact that GR142 was allowed to play - EVERY time I've gone online this guy ends up killing me!). But when I went on this other server (marked Easy All Welcome) the planes flew like they were from outerspace. They completely disobeyed all laws of aerodynamics and physics combined.

I would be pursuing one bandit when all of a sudden, he would launch up into the air 90 degrees off his current flight path - then skipped perpendicular to the right 50meters, then lost altitude at a right angle as well.

The only difference between the two servers was that the ping on the greatergreen one was 49 while the ping on the Easy server was 389. Also I was saving an online .trk.

Was this extraterrestrial weirdness because of some online lag? Or was it because I was doing an online .trk recording as well?

i think it is related to lag

IIRC it is when packet loss occurs ei informaiton goes missing
if your computer lags ( freeezes for a few seconds ) then i think this is what others see - until the server/computer figures out where the plane should be again

I'm sure someone who knows more will probably explain better and more detailed (and probably more accurate)but theres my bit anyway, hope you understand

Edit - apparently there is a way to intentionally cause this ( i will not print it here as i far as i'm concerned the less know the better - not meaning you JRH but perhaps others who may read this)

quite a few times i have been lining up for a killing blow and a plane has suddenly completely changed direction and wizzed off somewhere else - frustrating but you can never be sure if it was intentional or not /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif
