Formation flying in 3 easy steps:
1. Create a simple mission in the FMB that includes 3 or 4 aircradt, a bunch of turnpoints, elevation and speed changes, a takeoff and a distant landing point.
2. Hop into the # 2, 3, or 4 aircraft and get it into the air. Switch on the autopilot and note some identifiable piece of the aircraft you are in formation with (wingtip, canopy, etc.) and where it lines up with an identifiable part of your canopy (middle of a side window, half-way between canopy frame and fue****e side, etc.)
3. Fly the mission over and over until you can maintain your position beginning to end consistently.
Time consuming be sure but you will be rock solid proficient. Better yet further refine your skills online with a friend in an empty or near empty server. Nothing is more lethal online that 2 or 3 mates who are tight with their flying skills and know how each other will react.

Anyone else have any advice/tips for formation flying? My friend and I have also been trying to do this for a long time. And since only I have Track IR it is quite difficult (I usually have him fly a set speed/alt/heading and I try to match).

Formation flying is much easier with TrackIR than without. So, you trying to match his speed/alt/hdg is a good idea. Also once you close in and join up, it's oftentimes easier to stay in formation by adjusting your prop-pitch slightly instead of jockeying your throttle.

Other than that, it's really just a matter of practice...and fundraising for your buddy's new TrackIR. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

I'm still using my BM357 tag in here even though I've been with the BSS for a while. We ALWAYS fly correct formation online. Vidar, our CO was in the navy and flew S3 Vikings. He's a very knowledgable source, as well as a civilian instructor now.

Visually put your left or right wing tip (depends what side you're flying in formation) behind the rudder of the lead. Anyone that is further out in the formation should just visually line up the canopies. That should put you on the correct bearing line. Those visual cues work whether you're 3 ft away or 500 ft away. Stop by our forums and join us on teamspeak. You can also check out our screenshot page to see the formations we fly. www.bss214.com (http://www.bss214.com)

Formation flying is as easy as the lead pilot wants it to be. If they call out there airspeed, prop and engine settings/RPM's, rad settings etc and fly on a predictable course its easy.

A bit of advice here, for what it's worth.

Use throttle to maintain ALTITUDE i.e. up or down.

Use stick/trim to maintain LATERAL POSITION.

Do it the other way around and it gets instable and hairy.

cya around...

Here's a thread from awhile back that actually produced some good feedback.

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/481...521030174#9521030174 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/4811000174?r=9521030174#9521030174)

And I used to hate it when I heard others say it but it's the gospel truth...practice, practice, practice.

A really good compaign to practice formation flying in is Zeuscats' "Straight Down" campaign. Not only is it good practice in a stable bird but you get to fly the SBD-3...the most formidable and feared weapons platform ever.

You can find it at www.mission4today.com (http://www.mission4today.com) .

Is there anyway to set the AI formations in FMB? I want to change to VIC, BOX etc whilst doing a circuit.

Also land in formation?

If you want to land in formation, grab a couple of mates and fire up a simple coop. Host it through Hyperlobby or direct I.P. The best practice is through human interaction.
