edit: Thought I'd post some of the answers that Jonathan posts here.
1) When asked if we could have reversible/different game covers for the two protagonists:
It's like you read our minds! We were hoping to have it ready to show it today, but it still needs a little fine tuning. So we will share it soon! All physical copies of Assassin's Creed Odyssey will have reversible covers, featuring Alexios on one side and Kassandra on the other.
2) When asked about gear locations:
In most cases, they are not randomly placed and follow objectives you can set for yourself. Also completing a set grants a set bonus and all pieces can be upgraded through the blacksmith.
3) When asked about dynamic weather (1), lip synch fixes (2), other relationships (3), and if the game features more content than Origins (4):
1- We have a fully dynamic weather system to fit perfectly with our dynamic world, and the weather we have in game is spectacular. Sailing can really be a challenge in a storm!
2 - What you saw at E3 was still early footage of the game. We are working hard to ensure that Odyssey is the best it can be by release.
3 - There will be many different opportunities for romancing characters throughout your journey, which you can opt out of at any time. Romancing plays just as much of a part in the choices during your odyssey as other decisions.
4- Yes
4) When asked if the game features a progress tracker:
Not in the traditional Assassin’s Creed sense, but you will have a full quest log. Also many of our systems have individual progress trackers like our mercenary system (and other systems we want to keep as surprises).
5) When asked how Odyssey fits as an Assassins Creed story.
Great question. We are absolutely an AC game. AC games are about experiencing a key moment in history, a place and time that were host to major historical events. In AC Odyssey players will visit Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War, meeting historical characters like Socrates and Hippocrates. With our new dialogue system, players will be able to truly interact with history, which is something we’re really excited about. So get ready to debate with Socrates!
From a lore perspective, we wanted to tell the story of how First Civ artifacts created what would become the Templars vs Assassins story, which took place long before the Brotherhood.
Also, AC Odyssey is a continuation of the modern day story from Layla, so players will pick-up right after Origins.
6) When asked about petting animals:
You can Pet and tame many animals. But there are no cats (Only big cats :))
7) When asked if there is a "canon" choice in protagonist:
Yes there will be a canon represented in the novel. It features Kassandra and her journey. But in the game you decide your path , there is no right or wrong way.
8) When asked about the apparent lack of shields:
Yes, Spartans did use shields, but our Hero is a mercenary, not a Spartan soldier. Our gameplay is much more versatile than that of Origins and a shield was not suited to it, so we replaced shields with dodging, rolling and parrying mechanics. The parry mechanics gives a bit more of feel of old school AC Fight of counter attack, while still retaining fight mechanics of Origins. I can't speak for the future of the franchise for social stealth and parkour.
9) When asked if the game features more Pieces of Eden than just the Spear of Leonidas:
Yes, but I won't say more as I want you to discover it first-hands when playing the game!
10) When asked about character customization:
No you cannot customize the features of your character, but you can customise the clothing - Not with dyes, but you can mix and match gear sets with five different gear slots, and your hood will match the colour of your chest piece.
11) When asked about the return of parkour tomb puzzles (1), if players could act as mercenaries and hunt down other players in their game (2), and if parachutes will return (3).
1 - Yes :)
2 - No, just on NPC Mercs.
3 - .... Unfortunately no :)
12) When asked about source material for the historical segments:
We visited Greece to see the country first-hand, understand the topography and get a feel for the culture. We studied up on archaeological research and read ancient and contemporary authors of the classical period. We also hired on a historical specialist of Ancient Greece, Stephanie-Anne Ruatta, who has been instrumental in helping us recreate Ancient Greece and who we run our decisions past to make sure they are as historically accurate as possible.
13) When asked about more realism in combat:
Since you select the abilities you want to use, you can adapt your playstyle to suit your level of realism. You can be a pretty epic over the top warrior or a down to earth Assassin if you wish. We have showcased in our material so far more spectacular abilities, but there are some more subtle ones too.
14) When asked about if it is possible to unlock all skills in game:
You will acquire a certain amount of ability points as you play, but you will need to choose where you spend your points. But you can Re-Spec at any time and unlock the ones you want to try them out.
15) When asked about color pallet and saturation:
Oh yeah for sure (night time looks awesome BTW). We have 7 types of Biomes and many subregions will give a different vibe and feel.
16) When asked about who wrote the game:
It was a team effort headed up by Melissa MacCoubrey and I
17) When asked about ship upgrades:
You can upgrade your weapons, hull and ramming device through progression. Crew can recruited through the world to bring specific perks to your ship and cosmetic elements can also be applied to your ship and crew.
18) When asked if ships have the same importance as in Black Flag:
Ships and naval have a strong place in our game, but they're less the core element of the experience than in Black Flag. Gameplay is also different from BF as we have a more accessible and arcade approach, focusing on the immediate fun. We are true to the era, so no cannon but we have arrows, javelins and more emphasis on cleaving and ramming. Nothing better than cleave a ship in half to see her crew devoured by sharks! But of course there is also a progression and recruitable crew for players that want to go deeper.
19) When asked his favorite AC game other than Odyssey
I've liked a few of them very much! But I do think that my favorite one is AC Origins!
20) When asked if the map was bigger than Origns
The Overall map is bigger. Keep in mind that half is sea!!
21) When told that someone said there was no climbing in game
That person is wrong :) You can climb most environments in the game :) we also made some tweaks and polish to parkour.
22) When asked about triangle iconography in the series:
#Illuminati
23) When asked if he prefers Kassandra or Alexios
I love both :)
24) When asked if he'd rather fight 100 duck-sized Kassadras or 1 Kassandra-sized duck :p
my brain hurts
25) When asked if references to older games are made
Yes, not spoiling anything :)
26) When asked about mounts and if camels return.
Well you get to choose a pretty cool horse named Phobos!
27) When asked if choices could affect the game's ending
Yes. As for how dialogue choice will impact the game’s endings, we don’t want to give too much away, players will experience that for themselves. But your actions and choices will leave to different endings. True for other quests too!
28) When asked if there will be any romantic scenes. Also, when asked about if these scenes include nudity.
Depends if you are good at romancing :) Lovers keep their clothes on though.
29) When asked if recruits can be used in land combat
Yes we have an ability called Call to Arms that sends your recruits to distract and fight NPCs.
30) When asked his favorite part of the project:
I really like when things start coming together a few months before Alpha. You really start to feel your game and have incredible moments playing it. Other than that, revealing at E3 was awesome.
31) When asked if the protagonist's skills are different based on character chosen:
You choose your character at the start and play the full adventure as them. Their skills are the same, but you really have a lot of options to customize your playstyle and ability set.
... and that's a wrap. Looks like the AMA is now over!
