Hey guys,

Just a heads up, Assassins Creed Odyssey Creative Director Jonathan Dumont will be holding a Reddit AMA (https://twitter.com/assassinscreed/status/1009520017824714754) tomorrow at 3:00 PM ET.

If you have any questions for him, I'd strongly encourage you to check it out!

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DgKJGyeWkAEoYEQ.jpg

edit: Thought I'd post some of the answers that Jonathan posts here.

1) When asked if we could have reversible/different game covers for the two protagonists:

It's like you read our minds! We were hoping to have it ready to show it today, but it still needs a little fine tuning. So we will share it soon! All physical copies of Assassin's Creed Odyssey will have reversible covers, featuring Alexios on one side and Kassandra on the other.

2) When asked about gear locations:

In most cases, they are not randomly placed and follow objectives you can set for yourself. Also completing a set grants a set bonus and all pieces can be upgraded through the blacksmith.

3) When asked about dynamic weather (1), lip synch fixes (2), other relationships (3), and if the game features more content than Origins (4):

1- We have a fully dynamic weather system to fit perfectly with our dynamic world, and the weather we have in game is spectacular. Sailing can really be a challenge in a storm!

2 - What you saw at E3 was still early footage of the game. We are working hard to ensure that Odyssey is the best it can be by release.

3 - There will be many different opportunities for romancing characters throughout your journey, which you can opt out of at any time. Romancing plays just as much of a part in the choices during your odyssey as other decisions.

4- Yes

4) When asked if the game features a progress tracker:

Not in the traditional Assassin’s Creed sense, but you will have a full quest log. Also many of our systems have individual progress trackers like our mercenary system (and other systems we want to keep as surprises).

5) When asked how Odyssey fits as an Assassins Creed story.

Great question. We are absolutely an AC game. AC games are about experiencing a key moment in history, a place and time that were host to major historical events. In AC Odyssey players will visit Ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War, meeting historical characters like Socrates and Hippocrates. With our new dialogue system, players will be able to truly interact with history, which is something we’re really excited about. So get ready to debate with Socrates!

From a lore perspective, we wanted to tell the story of how First Civ artifacts created what would become the Templars vs Assassins story, which took place long before the Brotherhood.

Also, AC Odyssey is a continuation of the modern day story from Layla, so players will pick-up right after Origins.

6) When asked about petting animals:

You can Pet and tame many animals. But there are no cats (Only big cats :))

7) When asked if there is a "canon" choice in protagonist:

Yes there will be a canon represented in the novel. It features Kassandra and her journey. But in the game you decide your path , there is no right or wrong way.

8) When asked about the apparent lack of shields:

Yes, Spartans did use shields, but our Hero is a mercenary, not a Spartan soldier. Our gameplay is much more versatile than that of Origins and a shield was not suited to it, so we replaced shields with dodging, rolling and parrying mechanics. The parry mechanics gives a bit more of feel of old school AC Fight of counter attack, while still retaining fight mechanics of Origins. I can't speak for the future of the franchise for social stealth and parkour.

9) When asked if the game features more Pieces of Eden than just the Spear of Leonidas:

Yes, but I won't say more as I want you to discover it first-hands when playing the game!

10) When asked about character customization:

No you cannot customize the features of your character, but you can customise the clothing - Not with dyes, but you can mix and match gear sets with five different gear slots, and your hood will match the colour of your chest piece.

11) When asked about the return of parkour tomb puzzles (1), if players could act as mercenaries and hunt down other players in their game (2), and if parachutes will return (3).

1 - Yes :)

2 - No, just on NPC Mercs.

3 - .... Unfortunately no :)

12) When asked about source material for the historical segments:

We visited Greece to see the country first-hand, understand the topography and get a feel for the culture. We studied up on archaeological research and read ancient and contemporary authors of the classical period. We also hired on a historical specialist of Ancient Greece, Stephanie-Anne Ruatta, who has been instrumental in helping us recreate Ancient Greece and who we run our decisions past to make sure they are as historically accurate as possible.

13) When asked about more realism in combat:

Since you select the abilities you want to use, you can adapt your playstyle to suit your level of realism. You can be a pretty epic over the top warrior or a down to earth Assassin if you wish. We have showcased in our material so far more spectacular abilities, but there are some more subtle ones too.

14) When asked about if it is possible to unlock all skills in game:

You will acquire a certain amount of ability points as you play, but you will need to choose where you spend your points. But you can Re-Spec at any time and unlock the ones you want to try them out.

15) When asked about color pallet and saturation:

Oh yeah for sure (night time looks awesome BTW). We have 7 types of Biomes and many subregions will give a different vibe and feel.

16) When asked about who wrote the game:

It was a team effort headed up by Melissa MacCoubrey and I

17) When asked about ship upgrades:

You can upgrade your weapons, hull and ramming device through progression. Crew can recruited through the world to bring specific perks to your ship and cosmetic elements can also be applied to your ship and crew.

18) When asked if ships have the same importance as in Black Flag:

Ships and naval have a strong place in our game, but they're less the core element of the experience than in Black Flag. Gameplay is also different from BF as we have a more accessible and arcade approach, focusing on the immediate fun. We are true to the era, so no cannon but we have arrows, javelins and more emphasis on cleaving and ramming. Nothing better than cleave a ship in half to see her crew devoured by sharks! But of course there is also a progression and recruitable crew for players that want to go deeper.

19) When asked his favorite AC game other than Odyssey

I've liked a few of them very much! But I do think that my favorite one is AC Origins!

20) When asked if the map was bigger than Origns

The Overall map is bigger. Keep in mind that half is sea!!

21) When told that someone said there was no climbing in game

That person is wrong :) You can climb most environments in the game :) we also made some tweaks and polish to parkour.

22) When asked about triangle iconography in the series:

#Illuminati

23) When asked if he prefers Kassandra or Alexios

I love both :)

24) When asked if he'd rather fight 100 duck-sized Kassadras or 1 Kassandra-sized duck :p

my brain hurts

25) When asked if references to older games are made

Yes, not spoiling anything :)

26) When asked about mounts and if camels return.

Well you get to choose a pretty cool horse named Phobos!

27) When asked if choices could affect the game's ending

Yes. As for how dialogue choice will impact the game’s endings, we don’t want to give too much away, players will experience that for themselves. But your actions and choices will leave to different endings. True for other quests too!

28) When asked if there will be any romantic scenes. Also, when asked about if these scenes include nudity.

Depends if you are good at romancing :) Lovers keep their clothes on though.

29) When asked if recruits can be used in land combat

Yes we have an ability called Call to Arms that sends your recruits to distract and fight NPCs.

30) When asked his favorite part of the project:

I really like when things start coming together a few months before Alpha. You really start to feel your game and have incredible moments playing it. Other than that, revealing at E3 was awesome.

31) When asked if the protagonist's skills are different based on character chosen:

You choose your character at the start and play the full adventure as them. Their skills are the same, but you really have a lot of options to customize your playstyle and ability set.

... and that's a wrap. Looks like the AMA is now over!

There are sooo many players asking for modern day.. I dont even get why they kept it this short the last couple of games.

Whoops, looks like there were some technical difficulties.

The AMA has now moved to here (https://old.reddit.com/r/assassinscreed/comments/8suomv/hi_im_jonathan_dumont_creative_director_of/).

For sure.

It's hard to tell with the gaming community as a whole, but there's definitely some demand for MD.

I find this answer to "Will we be able to use shields" unacceptable.

"Yes, Spartans did use shields, but our Hero is a mercenary, not a Spartan soldier. Our gameplay is much more versatile than that of Origins and a shield was not suited to it, so we replaced shields with dodging, rolling and parrying mechanics. The parry mechanics gives a bit more of feel of old school AC Fight of counter attack, while still retaining fight mechanics of Origins."

I don't give a crap if the hero is a mercenary. He still dresses like a Spartan and fights like a Spartan. Plus he cling's to Leonidas' SPARTAN SPEAR! It's idiotic to omit one of the most iconic components of Spartan combat, and disingenuous to use the mercenary excuse when he clearly mostly looks and fights Spartan style. Using rolling and dodging instead is just arcade silliness.

Really interesting AMA this time.

Just to sum up a few points that I thought were interesting:

1) Game will ship with reversible cover to represent both protagonists.

2) It seems armor, like weapons, can be upgraded at a blacksmith.

3) Parkour tomb puzzles reportedly returning!

4) No beard customization :(

5) Melissa MacCoubrey helped write the game

6) Ship can be upgraded, including some upgrades via crew. Crew can also assist in land combat.

I would like someone to ask if it's possible they will consider having the Roll move they added as an Ability, which if unlocked would replace the ability to use a shield? Same with Leonidas' spear, an ability that would replace a regular dagger.

I don't buy that the new combat system doesn't facilitate use of shield like he claimed, and of the 3 moves he referenced that replace it, only Roll is something that wasn't in Origins. I also think it's odd he says you can choose the level of combat realism by not unlocking certain over the top moves like Spartan Kick, when we are forced to use Roll to replace shield and a powerful artifact spear to replace a normal dagger. For that matter why are there even Abilities like Spartan Kick if he's going to use the excuse you're playing as a merc not a Spartan when asked whether we can use shields?

When I say hoping someone will ask, I'm reluctant to join Reddit, which is known for people talking openly about pirated games. For this reason I find it's odd it's even being chosen as an AMA site by Ubi.

That makes me very happy. I loved heading to the Blacksmith when I had $ for another upgrade.

3) Parkour tomb puzzles reportedly returning!
OMGsh, something like Brotherhood maybe? I remember my first time playing AC, my fingers were sore from all the parkour.

4) No beard customization :(
Kinda hoped for this one but it wasn't a huge deal for me - just tipping a hat to 300

6) Ship can be upgraded, including some upgrades via crew. Crew can also assist in land combat
I'm not much into Naval stuff but I would enjoy upgrading the ship & love the crew recruiting concept so with us being able to do that, I think I'll like being more invested in the battles.
I saw some gameplay w/ sharks in the water too, should be interesting

Thanks for the notes on this Q&A - couldn't make it with phone calls I had to make today.

The fact that parkour AND the parkour puzzle tombs are back is just the icing on a huge, delicious cake called Odyssey. I was really looking forward to Origins last year (as I do most AC releases) but this...this is just too much, and I love it.

3) Parkour tomb puzzles reportedly returning!

I hope you're right. They said something similar about Origins, and that was a splendid opportunity wasted. For the most part, the outsides of the pyramids were more fun than the insides. Maybe "parkour tomb puzzle" doesn't mean what it used to. I'd like to take a wait-and-see attitude, but I've waited for so long and still haven't seen.

He also says they are tweaking and polishing parkour. I wonder what that means. I hope they are restoring some of the smoothness and flourishes that were taken out in Origins. If we can't have more interactive free running, at least it should look pretty. If I could find a video of Arno running through a vineyard vs. Bayek running through a vineyard, that would show what I mean.

Totally agreed.

I really hope this wasn't a miscommunication, and that the intent was that the question was probably asking specifically about Ezio era-style puzzles, and not tombs similar to those in Origins.

It's totally possible this is just a rumor, but for full disclosure I wanted to added this to this thread.

Via Twitter, Stephen Totilo of Kotaku (https://twitter.com/stephentotilo/status/1011639055120027648) clarified:

Sorry, AC fans, but Ubisoft PR just sent me a clarification. A rep says: "In regards to the question about parkour tomb puzzles we wanted to clarify that the tomb puzzles in Odyssey will be comparable to the ones in Origins, not parkour challenges as they existed in other opuses"

Again, to reiterate, nothing is set in stone until we've seen Ubisoft specifically say it, of course.

Cawatrooper9 was anything asked about whom we can ally with? I've read a in two places from a 3rd party that we could ally with Sparta or the Athens at a few points in the game. All game play and news seems to be built around aligning with Sparta. I'm just wondering how deep our choices can go with the two sides of the war. Being a mercenary I'd imagine we could fight for one or the other.

All questions answered are in this thread's original post.

I don't think that was asked though, but as far as I know we can only ally with Sparta (as having Athens win the war would have huge ramifications in history, after all).

It would be pretty cool to choose factions, though!

if it takes place in 431 and the end of the war being in 404 would we even see the end of the war? I'd imagine that a few choices here and there could lead to a few victories for ether side, but Sparta would still come out on top in the end. it's just how the story unfolds, and the different endings is not really based on who wins, but what happens to the characters by the end of the story. I do believe we will be able turn the tide in favor of Sparta or Athens (I'm hoping at least). I've heard it from 3 different places. Unless that info is just in error, it seems like Sparta or Athens can gain or lose control over a given area and we can assist with that for ether side.

If Origins had sand storms what would Odyssey have? Maybe a volcano that erupts or smokes, It would be beautiful to see it erupt on some of those islands. I loved that part saving Pompey with the smoking volcano and that was off the Greek islands. Could be part of a side mission too.
