View Full Version : Will this tactic continue to work on warships?

I was getting extremely annoyed by a warship that kept pinging at me while I was trying to line up a shot on a troop transport. Soo.. after he wrecked a shot I decided to see if I could take him out to swat the fly so to speak. I cranked up my engines and turned off silent running to make a loud commotion and say OVER HERE

He darted right at me and so I just launched out my aft torpedo and the fly went splat. I call it the Spathi Manuever! (For those who played Star control 2 :P) Will this continue to work or am I asking for trouble? If this doesn't continue to work.. do the Uboats with upgrades and later versions become more stealthy? Because the warships guarding the convoys are getting most bothersome with their ping ping :P!

You may concider yourself lucky.

These tactics were not used in real life.
Later in a war you will be getting homing torpedoes which were designed specificaly for targeting escorts, but target must travel at certain speed.

The whole idea of this game is stealth. Sometimes you must manualy set the speed to less than 3 knots while on silent running and avoid showing your entire bow to the pinging destroyer.

I have tried this a few times with mixed results. The problem with doing it is when the escort is straight on, it is a very narrow target. They are also cruising at a high rate of speed. In order for you to be more effective, you have to wait until it is closer. However, doing that means they will be firing off a few rounds at your periscope. Since it is traveling fast with a slim profile, a quick turn on and your torp misses. Of course, if you are only using impact pistols, it will more likely bounce of their bow and not detonate. Magnetic shots are the best in those siuations.

My new favorite tactic with dealing with escorts in a convoy is to fire two or three long range shots at merchants from outside the escort range. Launch and dive deep, moving away from where I fired. I usually get a hit or two, which usually slows down the merchant. I wait for the convoy to get out of visual range and then surface and finish off the merchant. When the merchant is down, I submerge and wait. Usually an escort will be coming in fast in a straight line toward the merchant's position. I know it is a long shot, but I fire at about 3000 m. I have been successful about 70% of the time. I once stripped an entire convoy of its escorts and then went to town on the remaining ships. Unfortunately I ran out of ammo and had to let several ships go. I still got over 100K on that patrol.

The thing I like about this tactic is you still stay stealthy. (Say that five times fast!) The escort is zooming in, not really knowing where you are and even if you miss, you should be able to dive and slink away.

Your method of drawing their attention only brings chaos on you if you miss.

This thread reminds me of this one I posted a while ago - 'Down the Throat' Shots (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/9121033774?r=5921094774#5921094774)

It's a very risky thing if you have only one stern tube to fire and you are playing with duds on option.

I did this once with a warship that I couldn't elude. It worked, but it was a last resort as it didn't seem like the depth charges were ever going to stop raining down around us. I consider it luck. As you're probably aware, I think this only works with magnetics & in 1940 there is a high rate of failure with magnetic pistols. You'll even get messages from BdU advising you to discontinue using magnetic pistols & to only use impact pistols. The chances of successfully making this shot with impact pistols is very slim.

You'll be somewhat better off in SH-4. With 4 stern tubes a "Down the Throat shot" becomes more viable. Fire 1 directly at him, one slightly left and another slightly right in case he turns.

Of course, until late 1943, the MK-14 torpedo had about every flaw a torpedo could have. It ran too deep, had a balky magnetic exploder, and a poorly designed contact exploder to make it even more fun.

So it's going to be an interesting time to see how having more tubes, but with cranky weapons, both fore and aft will make taking on the Escorts !
