View Full Version : so this new '46 add on...

It has both the Sturmi's over Manchuria, the "what if" add on and the PE-2 disaster that was released over the summer?

I just want to make sure that i am reading the information on the PF homepage correctly.

Im more concerned that if i pick up '46, i will be forced to get the PE-2 addon, (which i dont really want to do) because the '46 addon wont work without the patch that PE-2 includes...

For posterity i should mention i am running the merged version with the 4.04m patch.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The only thing like a "disaster" about the Pe-2 add-on was the Boonty DRM software. All indications are that that won't be present on the '46 DVD.

Anything else you didn't like about 4.05 will be patched (technically) twice since the DVD will include 4.06 and 4.07. And you'll get some very nice twin-engine planes to fly, the Pe-2 is a balst to sue for dive-bombing attacks on ships.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

If you live in the UK/Australia/Europe then the DVD should be easy to find when its available. In the US/Canada it seems we may be getting slighted by UbiSoft again but the DVD will be carried as an import by GoGamer.com.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yeah Phil the only disaster about the Pe-2 add on was the distribution. It was actually a pretty good package. The Pe-2 is a good plane as well. This 46 thing is going to be a great end to this series.... I still get blown away by the fact that when I first came here in 02 all there was was IL2. FB started out with 71 aircaft - 31 flyable.

229 flyables..... covering 4 fronts..... hundreds of objects.... spanning basically the entire war and beyond. Works for me.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yeah, i first got IL2 for christmas back in 2002, but i just never got into it. i had it sitting in the box for the longest time. it was only after reading a lot of user reviews, seeing the screenshots and IIRC finding this forum that i gave it a good chance to see what it could do. and i am glad i did- i have had more fun with this WW2 sim than any other i have played before; there is more options for user flyable aircraft that the list almost rivals that of the old Janes "Fighters Anthology" (which i still play) where you could fly just about anything imaginable, and it was just fun. Tho i will say that back in the day, secret weapons of the Luftwaffe, and, i forget the real title, but the aces over the pacific and aces over europe series were a ton of fun, and had a lot of what IL2 has- which is a lot of history, with a lot of airplanes, with a pinch of what if... IMHO its why it makes for a great piece of software that i hope will run on every computer i own from here out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

But, as for PE-2, idk i am not a real big fan of downloading a program i paid for- i have always liked having a copy that came from a factory so that i know all appropriate steps have been taken to make sure that the disc lasts. burned cds seem to not last as long, and then thers the off chance of a burner mess up and what happens when you do a fresh install of your OS? is it like iTunes which forces you to repay for the stuff you already bought?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Its kinda funny how you're braggins about your computer and it looks really powerfull but what's up with 160gig of HD, that pretty weak, with your specs you have to have like 1.4 TB (thats for terabyte).
Sorry its off topic, but its kinda funny.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Im not really bragging,(there is no 'ooo i have this, yours sucks', etc. etc.), i just use that as my sig because the questions i have asked in the past, often relate to game preformance and settings, and the question often comes up, what i have. Instead of having to rewrite it i just put it there...

I dont have to have anything i didnt want... on this computer, i got everything i wanted, but a huge hard drive is not one of those things.

When i built my system, i had the option to get the TB drive that Alienware offers. Yea it was an extra 8 or 9 hundred bucks at the time, but i figured i hate waiting 3 plus hours for my old 60g to defrag, and i am sure that the more full the larger drives get, the longer it takes to do basic system maintnence, which i do weekly, if not more than once a week.

I have found that the larger the hard drive, the more of a wasteland of files it becomes; people seemingly save any and everything, and then never find it again on these massive drives.

Plus, having a "smaller" hard drive forces me to backup my information often and clean out the drive, which is fine by me. Id rather have tons of backup CDs and an (almost) empty HD than a huge one and risk losing it all if there is a system failure, of if i have to do a fresh install of windows. So far it is working out nicely for me, and i have no complaints. All my illustrator and photoshop projects, my portfolio, my lessons and outcomes, all my powerpoint and other work related materials are all stored on CDs and i dont have any real fear of losing them if my computer crashes... And i backup the computer about once a month..

I have never been one to store tons and tons of random stuff on my HD... It also makes swapping work that i have done on my Alienware to other computers that i work on, including my laptop, easy. I dont have to worry about checking my email on "strange" computers and sending large filesizes.

As it is right now, i think i only use about 45 or 50 of that 160g hd... if that much. It dosent bother me at all to have a "small" drive, heck till now, i dont think i gave it much thought, other than when i hit the little check box the day i ordered it...

from everything i have read on this board, yes.

the 46 addon incorperates the last and latest patch, and has the new airplanes.
Tho im sure that some smaller game studios will create new misson and map packs (i can only hope).

after this, its time for BoB, and for people who are crying about not being able to run this at any level of detail, to start crying harder

Certainly looking forward to 1946.

The only thing I can see missing (unless I've missed them elsewhere), Is the Gloster meteor MK1, 2, and 3, and the DH Vampire. They may as well be there, everything else is!

This has been a terrific series to follow and thoroughly enjoyable.

You didn't miss them. They aren't there.

The number and variety of planes that are in the sim is phenomenal, and that is easy to forget when you're waiting for 'glaring ommissions' to be added. Some people want a flyable B-17 or Lancaster for example, or a certain USN torpedo bomber. Not all planes and variants could ever be added, but it is fun to dream ...

Fun to dream of a flyable Typhoon Mk.IB ...

Fun to dream of a flyable Spitfire Mk.XIV ...

Fun to dream of a P-47D-40 or P-47N ...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hi Skycat_2,

Totally agree. There are so many "It would be nice to have" aircraft.

Personally I am quite happy with what is already in game. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I don't think I'll ever have the time to fly them all, but I sure am having fun with what's there. (Just how do you land a Spitfire Mk VIIIc without breaking its undercarriage? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif ). &lt;-----Veady, Veady carefully. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif

This game has already reached the stage of one of those rare classics that will stay on my PC for a long time to come, well after it has been supperceeded by later developements. (SOW). I only have one other, "Panzer General 2". How's that for a blast from the Past?

Well into the local PC gamers store next week, and hope that 1946 is there ready for me.

Have fun everyone,

Alex

LOL Phil!!!!!! You're absolutely right concerning the large hard drives. I've got 4 HD's on my system (3 video editing scratch discs) and they take forever to defrag.

No one ever mentions that when they tout the latest and greatest for Hard Drive specs. LOL

Hopefully Santa is bringing the new DVD. I've e-mailed the info to my wife enough that she must have gotten the hint.

Has it only been since 2002? Back in the 90's, I started flight sims with Red Baron. Terrible sim, but I loved it. There was a demo for Warbirds on the CD and that became an addiction. You paid by the hour back then and there were charges on my VISA for over $100 some months. Made friends with others on-line that still last to this day. Moved to Aces High and somehow found out about IL2. IL2 opened up and entire perspective of WWII aviation that I never new existed. The MIG3UD and operations in the snow have become a passion. It feels like a lot longer than 2002. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Works for me. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I agree with you, Bearcat. I'm completely blown away by the series and what the team has done. It's definitely more than I could have ever asked for.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

A hand goes to the community too. Oleg's created a once in a lifetime sim, and the community took it and ran. They've created missions, campaigns, and skins, thus increasing the enjoyment and longevity to IL2/PF......

I preordered the 46 addon, and im now waiting like a kid for it... funny that the last time i was this excited about an addon for a game, was way back in 95 or 96 (IIRC) when the BGN pack for Nascar Racing 3 came out... or better yet when the marine fighters pack came out for USNF.. anyone remember thaat game(its part of the Fighters Anthology, which i still play lol).

i have yet to be dissappointed by the quality of the product that has been released- what i meant by disaster was how it was distributed...

Now, i love this sim, and its one of the 4 or 5 games that i have installed, and play on a daily basis, but i would love to see this same sort of "IL-2" phenomenon (sp) happen with a Korean, Vietnam or Cold War jet sim... IMHO that area of simming is still a largely uncharted territory and im hoping that someone picks it up (as was done with Wings over Vietnam and Strike Fighters, but more support, tho it has a pretty good base as it is).

Now im sure that you guys have seen this but how wild does this thing look to fly?

http://www.pacific-fighters.com/ss/Lerche_01.jpg

i love the pilot's position, and just how insane it looks like it will be in combat.... how i wish there was a rocket pack to use now lol...

Oh and about the community.... if it wasnt for the massive amount of users and ability and talent of many of them, im not sure where this series would be, but im sure it wouldnt be at this point..

I am playing user created campaigns and missions that are so detailed and so much fun, that its actually hard to step back and say that this is just a game... and i like that. theres nothing worse than spending money for a product that you get bored of or that dosent live up to your expectations... this thankfully, hasnt been one, and im glad i gave it a second chance.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hi Guy's,

Can I just add a big Yes! to the "Korean War" for this series.

It will probably not happen, but If ever I've seen the perfect viehicle for it, it is Il2.

Just a BTW question, Wasn't there some problem with Gruman aircraft that was precluding this from happening?

Have Fun,

Alex http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It seems like RRG's next project is some kind of a Cold War title (http://www.rrgstudios.com/EN_02_08_UnnamedTitle.shtml) based on 1C's "Storm of War" engine. Korea? Most likely, but this has not yet been confirmed. It would seem to be a logical evolution for RRG because they can further apply their Manchuria and '46 expertise.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Who knows what happens to Il-2 series now?

Someone who attended the Birmingham IFC confirmed that RRG's sim is the Korean War. And uses the SoW engine. Fun!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

LOL Phil!!!!!! You're absolutely right concerning the large hard drives. I've got 4 HD's on my system (3 video editing scratch discs) and they take forever to defrag.

No one ever mentions that when they tout the latest and greatest for Hard Drive specs. LOL

I wonder if VISTA will have an improved defrag system. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Pick yourself up a copy or download of Diskeeper 10 m8. It puts the Windows defragger to shame. It is alot quicker and can be scheduled to run at a more conveinient time like when you are sleeping. Well worth the $$$ spent for it imo.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
