Have a bucketload more power in your desktop now than a supercomputer did 20 years ago?

I remember watching a film called The Last Starfighter when I was a kid, it was a 1984 sci-fi/teen movie that was one of the first films to utilise extensive CGI.

A Cray X-MP supercomputer was used to render the CGI. The X-MP had a then blistering 128mb of RAM and roughly equates to about 1/2 the power of an XBox and about 8% of a E6700. In 1984 the Cray cost $15,000,000.00 which is some serious rocket I think you'll agree.

I robbed this off another thread about FSX.

Now that's what I call progress.

Yes we do, but can it meet the demands of Oleg's stress test called SOW http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

It's the software that pushes the development of hardware. What will the SoW engine require? Odds are it won't run smoothly at maximum settings on the computer you built last month. But, I could be wrong about that. Pretty sure it won't do all that well on my three year old computer.

What will BoB require to play on perfect mode? Good question but I can't wait to have it on my desk! I am grateful for the age we live in and the speed of progress. Think of what gaming will look like in say 10 years?....20 years...
