hi

im playing sh3 standard version and i want to maximize dmg fro my torpedos to make the best use of them in terms of shoting the least possible per ship.
So were i should aim for at enemy ships to max dmg on them??
i have a c2 cargo on my sights and i shot one torp and it hit but didnt sink it stopped to 0 speed and it doesnt sink (i spend a littel of time 8X and ship still stands, i spend second torpedo on ship and still it doesnt sink) im aiming for middle of ship near brige a bit to the front and depth 8.3 to blow under keel, trigger is magnetic so what im doing wrong or were should i place my torpedoes and depth to make ship sink with one or 2 torpedoes???

C2's are notoriously hard to sink. Sometimes they go down with one hit to the fuel bunker (just ahead of the mid point), other times it takes 2-3 torpedoes along the length. It all depends on chance. Torpedo damage is a range of values, and if it's not enough to drop the ship's hit points due to luck, then you need to hit it more.

Also, torpedoes have a chance of a critical hit when they hit certain areas of the ship (like the fuel bunker or ammo storage on warships). However, it is also very random

Hey Firebird,
Ships going to England, heavy laiden {fully loaded} tend to sink faster than ships returnning to America {in ballast}.
The sinking characteristics are supposed to be modeled fairly accurately, so I target the engine room. Just aft of the superstructure.
The engine room is the largest compartment on most ships so a hit there should probable sink it[especially in heavy weather}.Worst case, they stop and make it easier to attack again.
A c2 has a draft of 8.7 meters. So in relatively calm sea i set my fish/torp with the magenetic exploder on at 9 m.
I tend to set my torps .3 m deeper than the draft of my target ship.
BUT,
In STORMY WEATHER go for impact exploders cause the rolling/pitching effect of the ship make it's draft to unpredictable, which in that case ,I set my torps 1 m shallower.
Unfortunately, nothing that I've tried, garentees a sinking every time. But in calm weather a torp aimed at the MOT {middle of target} at the right depth should give you explosive results.GOOD HUNTING capt. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

thanks for the input ppl especially kptl i tried a shot and i hit it good , the problem was the trigger as im in stormy weather and i was using magnetic and it wasnt working , but with impact trigger to the engine room i sank it in second shot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. gona use ur input to my next victims heheh tnx fro the help

Why waste valuable torpedoes on immobilized ships if you have deck gun? Unless, of course, you do not have one or the weather is too rough.

What Kaleun said. But check first they can't shoot back, or retreat to extreme range. In flat calm, sinking a stationary C2 at say 3500m with an 8.8cm deck gun shouldn't be hard (aiming yourself) I normally get the distance right with HE, punch a few AP along the waterline, and then go back to HE. If there is a swell, you need to fire as the bow drops below level to avoid 'wild' high shots. This gets risky later in the war, as you can assume the target has radioed for help, and the FAA may arrive shortly.

...and only do that if you play completely ahistorically http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

In real life, waves aren't what they are shown to be in SH3. There are smaller ripples that move the boat tiny amounts, that will throw off your aim. That's why most commanders didn't even use deck guns, and those who did were at most 1000m away.

And at that range, any ship that could shoot back would have a huge advantage due to not being pitched and rolled as much by small swells.

...I may be crazy, but I think of it as shooting a rifle. Your breathing moves the barrel up and down in a predictable pattern. Like waves. Then your arm starts trembling if you stood too long, and that induces completely random motion of the barrel (by tiny amounts), and is enough to throw your aim way off, at a long distance

Hey firebird,
The draft of a C2 cargo ship is 7.8M not 8.7 as I said in the previous post.Sorry about that,I guess I was feeling a little backwards!

yea kptl i noticed the mistake but followed same ideas and it sunk well with second torpedo ( im using torpedoes because its november 1939 and i cant get calm weather as its winter even in gibraltar.
Another thing were are good shipping lanes to get contacts to sink ships any ideas, and why am i not getting convoy contacts in game im in second patrol and no contact of convoys yet and im spending a lot of time in sea i got unlimited fuel and i still have 10 torpedoes to fire, im firing at 4000 up ships no lower to get more tonage...

Hey firebird,
I'm a fan of AM52.It's a choke point of approx. four major convoy lanes that are active throughout the war. AM21-22 is also a good area for convoy traffic.
It sounds like your a tonnage-aholic like me, so I'll mention this one, BF11. In and around this area single merchies and convoys use this route. But the creme de le creme is after Dec.07/41. American passenger liners cruise this spot quite regularly. At over 20000grt each they are too juicey for me to pass up.I've sunk 4-5 of them a patrol.BUT,I must warn you, after sinking one or two, the British start sending destroyers to find you.So be on the look out for surprise patrols.
All these areas are great but became increaseingly diffecult as the air patrols became heavier. But what's war without risk?
Let me know if These work for you. I'm not buying sh5 cause of the bugs and drm crap so I've gotten back into sh3 again. It's Dec/1940 and I've been watching those U.S. passenger liners {bloody things are still neutral} sail by and it's driveing me bananas.
Good Hunting!

hi kptl
Well looks like that im not the only one that likes to go after big ships and not spend valuable torpedoes on low tonnage ships. i added the areas u told and im now on BF 12-13-15 ( i patrol around this spots and im having a good time only 4 torpedoes to go with my Type VII and if i remember correct when i end second patrol the type IX will be available to me to upgrade.
My kills so far are most c2 cargos and those dam ships need at least 2 torpedoes to go down ( in stormy weather with impact triggers at draft of -1m of ship draft), sometime i shot one and the ship stops but i accelerate time x 8 and it doesn't go down; do u usualy sink them with 1 hit or need more like im guessing or maybe i just ain't waiting enough time to let them go down no??; and after a bit and i need to shot another torpedo to sink the blokes.
The interesting passenger liners u say that caught my attention go in which area, AM 52 or BF 11?? and seeing that they have 20 ks of tonnage i find myself interested to know how many torpedoes do u spend on those babys??
Finaly usually what do u upgrade with the renown u get in patrols ???

kptl.thomsen
03-30-2010, 04:19 PM
Hey Firebird,
For the passenger liners they travel through BF11.Sometimes a contact square will appear and if it's travelling "fast" it's usually a liner. After you sink one, make a note of the direction thier coming from and travel down that line. You should stumble on more.
They should still only take one or two torpedos to sink them, especially if your going for the engine room.BUT BEWARE! An exploding liner if an extremely volitile target.First time I encountered one,I closed to within 500M and let fly two fish,It blew up and destroyed my Uboat, and I was @ periscopre depth! BOY was I angry http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif
As for upgrades,I get just about everything. My current career is in dec/40 and i've upgraded my engines, batteries and hydrophone. But when they are available I usually get TURM3 flak tower {with, of course the latest machine and flak guns},radar, radar warning,Bold and all the rubber coatings.I currently have over 16000 renown so that's not an issue.
What year is you current career in? What is your current tonnage and renown?
GOOD HUNTING! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

well i just finished my second patrol and im at 4 december 39 i have sunk 68ks of tonnage and have 2000 renown i got my last fish more accurate and i sank a t2 tanker and a c2 cargo with only one torpedo per ship with impact triggers and i aim for MOT (midle of ship) and i set depth of torpedo of half the draft of the ship im aiming.
In last patrol i finally found a large convoy unescorted and i had only 3 fishes to spend, and to make things worst i was spotted by aircraft early an few hours and when the convoy got to my intercept point they were all zigzagging and it was a hole mess got a t2 tanker, missed a t3 tanker and shot a coastal merchant by mistake ( thought i was aiming at a c2 cargo) all due to the confusion it was and moving into ideal firing positions i made to make all 3 shots 2 bow and one aft, a bloddy mess that what it was thanks to the dam aircraft. oh well better luck next time i hope http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Btw what type of u-boat u are using and ur average tonnage per patrol and waht do u think of silent hunter 4, the 5th i agree with u by what i seen full of bugs ???

Hey Hey Firebird,
I in a V11-C at the moment.I'm averageing 61000grt a patrol. My total is 796234grt after 14 patrols. I'm a big deck gun fan, even if i'm out of torps and the weather is calm enough I'll still hunt ships{not in convoy}.
I like SH4,but liked it better when they added the uboat missions.I just can't shake the image of the cold hard Atlantic vs the warm sedate Pacific.I have to admit I was alittle jealous of the superior graphics of SH4 vs SH3 but,for me,4 doesn't have the immersion quality of 3.
How long have you been playing the sh series? The reason I ask is your register year is 2007.Just curious. Good Hunting Herr Kaleun! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Well i played silent hunter from silent hunter 1 to 3, yes i said silent hunter 1 !!! in the first years of computers im from good old dos and futher stil from zx spectrum a rarity now,i got a hole lot of years of computer games under my belt as im a gown up man now and i still play a bit every day not as much as i played in my younger years.
i played the series and im a fan since day one. i Never played sh4 but ill try after this one if i fell like it and i have time and patience as i prefer to spend my free time with my rl friends and hang out.
Im in my type VII and saving rewnow to get to type IX.
In my first plays of sh3 i average 100 ks per patrol and my max in game if im correct was 153 ks when i was able to hit and kill ships with 1 torpedo per shot and only sinking c2 up ships, witch im aiming to get that average of kills per torpedo, but i don't remember exactly how i did such a good success with shots i haven't played sh over a long wile.
Today i made a mission historical, the first one and i manage to sink a battleship and get away with it ( the scenario is difficult and in rl the guy that did it got killed during the process and i see why, i barely managed to get away with it as there is 6 or 8 destroyers screening the battleships.
im currently in patrol 3 and i sank 3 ships already and im in area AM52 to do some convoy action ehehhe :; http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.
well and u how long do u play this game series???
im considering buying sh4 as i never played it and it might be interesting after im done with my sh3 and as u say graphs are good it might be interesting to see it, i saw movies on tube and i liked the graphics of game and i might go fro it after im done with sh3 as im such a big fan of the series, or u think its not worth a try???

Hey firebird,
It's seems your a "old guard" just like me! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
I was playing a subsim game called Silent service {microprose 1985} and Silent service 2. Then I found Silent hunter 1 and have been methodically purchaseing and playing all the Silent hunter series since. I love them all,but have to say,SH2 was a bit disapointing. Why on earth did they impose a scripted campaign I'll never know?
I was able to get dosbox {a dos emulater. spelling?} and can play SH1 on my current rig.
I want to play SH5 but I'm waitng and hopeing they drop drm and fix the many bugs it has.
As for SH4 you ask? Worth it? I think so. Especially since it should be pretty cheap and all the patches are in place ,now.
Have you ever heard of Subsim.com? Those guys are great. They have a group of dedicated modders that have created a huge series of mods{for lots of naval war games, not just SH} that enhance the game experience like you cannot imagine. There is nothing like hunting the great Atlantic while hearing Marliena Dietrick {correct spelling?} singing on the gramaphone. If you check it out, tell me what you think. Also I was just wondering where your from? Just curious. I'm Canadian.
Anyway SH awaits and I must Heed the call.So I'm on the schnell!! Good Hunting!

Hey kptl

Well im from Portugal in Europe, a cool place to travel with lots of cool stuff to see ehehe http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.
I played also the games u said i think been many in the years. i like strategy, role playing, and simulators of war, like subs and airplanes. think ill buy sh4 then after i end sh3 and im the same way as for silent hunter 5, gona wait till they fix it good.
in my play in sh 3 i got my aiming better and im now sinking 90 ks avg, and i sunk a American tanker by mistake as it was neutral and it was a bad move i must admit lowered my renown i got...
As for the site u said i need to check it out a bit to see what they got( i think i been to the site before, in my first play of sh3) so ill check it out also. thanks for the help out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Btw i still cant get type IX boat i got 4800 renown and im in march 1940 and i realy want to get that sub as it is better then type VII and got more torpedoes, do u know how much do i have to have to get type IX u boat

Hey Firebird,
Portugal, Awesome!Betcha it's alot warmer there than where I am.
As for the type IX I'm no authority there. I've always used a VII C. Once I upgraded to a type XXI and it cost me 30 000 renown. But one thing i do know about it is, not all bases will offer the type IX. I'm in ST. Nazaire in France and I think it only uses VII C. But, it's been a while since i played a career for the whole war so i can't remember.
My last patrol, I used all my torpedos and was heading for port, in a storm, when the the weather went clear. So i turned around and started hunting again. I track and intercepted a small convoy{ 2 C2's, 1 T1 and a neutral sml. merch.} guarded by 1 Bittern sloop. It was dark but clear {no moon} and i sunk the sloop with my deck gun. killed the rest with the gun. My total for the patrol was 103 000 GRT.Yeah, I was happy about that one! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Anyway my friend,Good Hunting! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
