-S- all,
as you can tell by my last couple of post, i'm new to SH3 and decided to post a AAR of my last mission and i would like any feedback that would help me become a better captin.
- U-99 type VIIB launching from Lorients,France Oct 10th 1940 thru Oct 14th 1940
- Mission: patrol BE27 for 24 hours
After leaving port on a SSW heading,I engaged and sunk 1 C2 ship and 1 small tanker. the next day again engaging and sinking C2 ship and a small merchant ship. Hours later sinking a C3 merchant ship. After all this, with only 1 fish in the foward tubes and 1 in the aft + 1 spare fish, i decided to head for my assigned patrol. at 2am on the 14th, i came behind a convoy. My plan was to wait till sunrise and survey the way i could attack. i 1st noticed 3 C2 merchant ships, 1 small merchant and a amred towler. I surfaced to get a better view, assigned a watch officer and all of a sudden, my deck gun started firing. i yelled "STOP FIRING!!!", seconds later, the towler did a 180 and spotted me with its spot light. MG rounds bouncing off my hull. i turned the u-99 so the aft tube was in firing position, launched my fish "Tick Tick Tick Tick" from my stop watch and nothing, the WO said "torpedo missed". At that point, i tried to get the towler into a turn fight so it could give my crew time to load my last shot, So i'm turning and turning and turning and paying attention to the towler when all of a sudden, "PING PING PING" i look infront of me and there was either 1 or 2 destoryer (all i saw was 2 spot lights). I crash dive and head east towards Lorients at 70 meters thinging i'm clear cause i didn't hear any splashes, BANG BANG...Diesal engine compartment, rear quarters, command post, foward quarters and the conning towers were all hit, 1 was at 140 meters blew the ballast and then i was dead.
5 officers, 16 petty officers, and 30 sailers all KIA
U-99 claimed 5 ships, the total tonnage was lost with the ship.

Now with that being said, was it smart to tail the convoy? i had 3 fish total plus 88mm ammo. i didn't see the destoryers but thats why i wanted to wait till sunrise to make sure it was just that towler. i saw all those big ships and my mouth just started watering http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I'm sorry if this is to long without any screen shots but how do you take screen shots?
Thanks

Welcome aboard buddy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
Read the post nearby about convoy tactics, read my answer there.
PS, convoy defence by escorts - one up front, by about 2ks, one on the tail by about 4ks (he's a trap for young kaluens), and maybe one either side, all moving up and down. Tailing is ok but stay out of sight till dark so you can get closer at ahead flank, submerge to p-depth, launch your fish. Don't wait to se the results, just go deep and fast - get out of there
