2 things come to mind.
1: if you're using an Antivirus disable it.
2: if you're using a cdrw and have another available drive, us the other drive because there are issues with cdrw's.

My system:

AMD XP 2400+ @ 2.13 Ghz
1 gig of Corsair DDR PC2700 RAM @333Mhz

Microsoft Directx 9.0a
Antec TruePower TrueBlue True480 PSU
16x Antec DVD drive
24x10x40 Plexwriter CD-RW
1 Westerndigital 40 gig harddrive, master
1 Westerndigital 100 gig hdd, slave

correction. the issue is with the software, not the CD drives.

i had the exact same problem. the only way i was able to install the game was with the "minimal" install.

also, my event viewer complains about all kinds of bad blocks on disc 3.

/me thinks disc 3 was just compiled improperly.

Correction, this is not with the software, but that some cdroms have trouble reading the cds properly, thus describing your "block" problems.

This is the typical error message you will get when you have a faulty CD-rom (scratch or "bad" burn) - maybe your CD is faulty.
