Nor me, but I will try it when I get home.

Who'll be the first on here to say whether or not it fixes perfect mode?

Cheers,

Allegedly it does http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

According to posts on tech forum, I'll know personally in about 4 hours.

It has already been confirmed that perfect mode works with the 4.1 drivers yesterday.

All jokes asides, I'm not overly impressed with these drivers, sort of an anti-climax. Excellent looks just like before. Perfect is now possible, yet, for other reasons, impossible. Frame rate on my 9600Pro o/ced to 500 MHz (from 400 stock) is just, well, pathetic. Especially above water. So, I'm back on excellent 'till I get that 9800Pro.

One other thing - why is perfect so slow? I mean, there is nothing spectacular about its looks!

The water is a lot better, you can have really nice detailed trees and the high alt rendering is waaaaaaay better in perfect mode.

Yes, I'm aware of these improvements. However the cost in framrate is not matched by the improved looks!

Looking at the release notes for the driver there are some enhancements specific to the Radeon XT series of cards... apparently it uses the in-built temperature monitoring of these cards to boost clock speeds up to the max limit which is possibly why I got an FPS increase with these new drivers.

Your card only has a 128bit memory interface and 4 rendering pipelines.

The 9700-9800 cards have a 256bit memory interface and 8 rendering pipelines.

You're right Cappa! Only 4 pipelines and 128 bit bandwidth really hurt 9600 Pro performance. Well, it almost seems I'm sitting with an outdated card here. Already, only 4 months after I bought it! Well, well, I'll be upgrading to 9800 Pro in a few months anyway. Just to make sure I can run H-L 2 and Doom 3 with all eyecandy on! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Got to take it easy a few monts now. But it itches under my clothes - go get 9800, go get 9800, go get it... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm very pleased. I was using the 3.10s with my 9800Pro and couldn't get perfect, although excellent was fine. Now I'm not only playing perfect but it seems frame rates are almost as good. I was expecting a significant drop but so far, on my PC, its not very noticeable.

Works good, no issues...
Not all bugs fixed, but mostly.Still a few artifacts at waters edge and the like but overall a solid release (I run perfect settings, 1152x864 32 bit color)

Don't get a sapphire.

Get either a retail ATI or a Hercules card.

And I have seen IL2 on a GeForce 4 Ti4600 and on my Hercules Radeon 9700 Pro it looks much better because you can actually use FSAA and AF without turning your game into a slide show.

Rajvosa
01-22-2004, 04:10 AM
Thanks for the advice! What is wrong with Sapphire? WHat do you think of PowerColor? I know that Hercules cards are very good, but they are more expensive!

Powercolor also falls in the lesser quality range.

It may be a bit more expensive but it will be worth it.
The Hercules cards have cooling fins for the memory on both sides of the card as well as cooling fins on the bottom of the graphics chip, opposite to the cooling fan.
Most Radeon cards don't have cooling fins on the memory at all. (9700/9800 Pro cards, not talking about the new XT cards)

And you can use the ATI Catalyst drivers without any problems so you don't have to use the Hercules ones.

I have a Saphire and I'm very pleased, it OCs well too. In the reviews I've read its right there with the best manufacturers.

My upgrade is from a card far superior to the 4200, the 5900non-Ultra. I also was using AA and Aniso. I won't dispute Spinnetti's experience, he's his own judge in the matter, but compared to my 5900 the 9800Pro is a clear improvement. The 4.10cats are very good, hands down the best. I will never play this sim less than perfect again . Also, an experience I noticed which I didn't foresee, I'm a better pilot with perfect; being more real my reactions are more instinctive.

Its your money, it may not be worth it, or it could be the best means of enhancement till BoB.

They used to be great so I have no idea what is going on really.

Rajvosa

To be honest, my 9600Pro is a Sapphire. 4 moths old and I've already replaced the heatsink. During the first few minutes of operation there was a strange noise coming from the fan, been so ever since I bought it. At first I was able to overklock the card, but than mystic lockups occured. I figured it's the videocard so I de-tuned it back to stock. After a while lockups occured at stock speeds as well. I figured it was time to get a new heatsink and fan. So I purchased a heatsink made by Arctic Cooling, a really massive thing that covers the whole card, and blows the hot air out of the case. Sort of similar to Nvidia's dust buster, but very quiet. I have overklocked the core to 490 MHz and ram to 330 MHz, and haven't experienced a crash yet. So, I think that cards per se are excellent, but fans are sub par. Those other guys fans must have failed and ruined the whole card.

Well, I don't like to mod my cooling solution on an expensive card like the 9700/9800 Radeons.
I don't think you will get any warrenty when something does happen to the card itself.

arcadeace
01-22-2004, 04:56 AM
Nope, there won't be any warranty.

I do plan on putting better sinks on mine, I'm a tweaker to the bone. I have them here, its just a matter of getting down to it.

This fan fits on 9800Pro as well and you bet I'll put it on as soon as I get the card. It has saved my card from getting fried, so why not? It has two speeds: low for normal operation and then it's virtualy noiseless and high for overklocking. It's very quiet in this mode as well. I don't like to mod stuff either, but something needed to be done. Anyway, I will definitely be looking for a Hercules card than!

Well a couple of years ago, I fried a Voodoo 3 card (jeez, it's almost ages ago!), was just messing around with it. So I retured it to the dealer. He just put the card in a test rig, saw it wasn't working and gave me a new Voodoo 4 since V3 was no longer available! No questions asked!

I get better performance in OpenGL, it's an urban legend that ATI doesn't do well in OpenGL.

So far the only people that claim that ATI does poor in OpenGL on this forum are from Nvidia users.
