Are you talking FPS? or RTS? or naval? or armor ?? There are heaps http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In the FPS the popular ones seem to be BF1942 and Medal of Honour though they both seem arcady especially compared to games like America's Army.

The Claasic 2D tank sim was Steel Legions but that is quite dated now.

Catergory 1, Most Sales World Wide
Catergory 2, Most realistic.

Seeing as its all about making money both catergories eventualy will inter twine.

I would have to say CM:BO and CM:BB are the two best ground sims for WWII. They both have unparalleled realism. I havn't gotten a chance to play many others though so if anyone has a different view on these games they are more than welcome to share them.

Just tell us what you think as the best game. Any type is okay. I don't play online game due to connection problem so no BF1942 for me. Played MOHAA before but i think it's a bit arcadish but it's a great game though. So far i think the best WWII related game is FB but i'm looking for something other than that now perhaps RTS or other strategy games. I browsed through Gamespot and it doesn't give much score for Blitzkrieg (7.1 out of 10).

tactical infantry sim - the Close Combat series
first person shooter - Medal of Honor
flight sim - IL2/FB (of course)- WW2 fighters a close second
naval simulator - Warship or Action Stations (tie)
armour - one that is both fun and realistic hasn't been made yet

You can play bf1942 offline with bots but it is even more arcady than MOHAA so probably not what you want. The new Wolfenstein is also arcady (even has supernatural monsters on the nazi side) as is the "Day of Defeat" mod for counterstike.

Possibly look at some of the 2D top down games like Steel Legions, Iron Cross, and the microsoft Close Combat ones.

Fb is an excellent WWII game. European Air War comes in a close second. SWOTL was fun for its time.
Day of Defeat is a pretty good FPS (oxymoron?) BF1942 could be good, in my opinion, if players of so many online games didn't act like morons.

no offense, but I hate BF 1942 AND Blitzkrieg. I find both of them way too unrealistic to be any fun.

(My list /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

Best First-Person Shooter: Medal of Honor. It's silly and hardly realistic, but has great graphics, AI, animations and sounds.

Runner Up Best First Person Shooter: It's a tie between BF1942 (including expansion pack) and ~Ahem~ "Return To Castle Wolfenstein." In offline single player mode, BF1942 is a fun way to kill time and you get to do about anything you want: drive tanks, fly airplanes, operate MG positions ... but you get killed alot. Think "Unreal Tournament" in single-player mode. As for RTCW, ignore the supernatural stuff like killing cyborgs and zombies, and you still have to deal with the Wermacht and SS troops.

Best Tactical Shooter: "Hidden & Dangerous." Move your commandos around in God Mode, then jump into their skins and take out your enemies in First Person view. Some of the shootouts are absolutely amazing. Great AI and animations for its time.

Runner Up Best Tactical Shooter: "Deadly Dozen." Surprisingly good for a budget title; similar to H&D in execution but graphics are nearly as good as those in "Medal of Honor" or RTCW. Choose the specialties of your four-man commando team carefully to finsh the mission. (I haven't played the new Pacific DD game yet.)

Best WWII Role Playing/Action Game: "B-17: The Mighty Eighth." This sim is brilliant in its complexity and depth. You ARE the bombadier. Or the pilot. Or the navigator. Or the tail gunner. Or the squadron commander. Lots of technical stuff to learn.

Runner Up Best Role Playing/Action Game: "Panzer Elite." PE has to be recognized as the best at something but saying it's the best armored combat sim is too easy because there just isn't much competition for that title. The graphics are rough by today's standards, but behind that is a lot of tactical strategizing as well as ongoing crew and resources management. Fight smart or be dead ...

Game That Stikes Me As Most Realistic Although I've Never Played It: "WWII Online Blitzkrieg" ... I messed around with the vehicles and tanks in the game's training area and I liked how thoroughly modeled they are. I also like the concept of everything happening in real time across all of Europe. Hitch a ride to get to the battle, soldier, or else you have to march on foot the entire way. People who play this game regularly rave about it, but I don't feel like paying the monthly subscription to join in.

If you have either Unreal Tournament or/and Unreal Tournament 2003 and you love simulations which get as real as they get, check out either The Third Reich (http://www.thethirdreich.com) or Red Orchestra. (http://www.unrealwarfarex.com/redorchestra.) Both mods are aiming for a very high standard of realism and in both cases some on the dev team own several Russian/German WWII (original!) weaponry.

Best games per genre are Forgotten Battles, CMBB, Panzer Elite, Hearts of Iron and The Operational Art of War.

BF1942 has been gathering dust in my shelf, neither DOD interests anymore. Way too shooters to be exciting IMHO. I hope that Operation Flashpoints Invasion 1944 -mod turns ot to be good, that WW2 would get great game in infantryman's point of view too.

Ps. Panzer Elite NEEDS to be replaced by Tank-sim made for present day PC's (and hopefully made by 1C:Maddox Games /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

I tried bf1942 and hated it. I don't quite understand how people can say that these graphics are incredible. For me, a turn off.

I liked Moh better, though I never considered it a realistic combat sim. Didn't like the movies in between, if people actually moved like that they would go and see a doctor. Loved the hike over the beach tho. Was pretty cool /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If you seek realism, maybe you should try World at war, and get the mod from blitzkrieg org.

http://www.matrixgames.com/Games/WorldAtWar/index.asp

and

ftp://209.164.73.216/pub/mods/steel_panthers/

they have a download section for steel panthers World at war, that adds more realism to the game.

if you go to their website you can ask all the questions you need there /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

http://www.theblitz.org/index.php

btw, steel panthers waw is a cool game and its free /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Silent Hunter / Silent Hunter II

Hidden & Dangerous

It was a shame that the multiplayer side of Silent Hunter II / Destroyer Command broke down, but nevertheless SH/SHII are good games.

Hidden & Dangerous is allegedly very buggy (though it plays fine for me) but very immersive.

I used to play sudden strike. The original with 3rd party update APRM is really great.

the settings in the original are really unrealistic so you need the mod. Sudden Strike2 is even worse. I will never buy anything from CDV software anymore. They didn't listen at all to what ppl said on the forums and made the game even worse, not even graphics changes.

i must say (other than fb) my personal favourites are MOHAA and RTCW a close third - i don't care what anyone says about arcadrishness (or unrealness - in the case of RTCW) i'll admit i don't own alot of games but i find these games fun to play and release a bit of tension on.

both games have excellent music (best iv'e ever heard in a game in the case of MOHAA and are deeply immersive IMO and both vprovide a nice counterpoint to the realism/skill needed in FB.

Fourth i would probably put bf1942 although this could be a hell of alot better- especially if they actually bothered modelling the russian and japanese weapons ( instead of giving the rusiian american guns and the japs german guns- EH?)

Most realistic Armor fight: Combat Mission: From Barbarossa To Berlin

Best WW2 sim: IL-2: FB /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Best war simulator: Operation Flashpoint added with some WW2 mods (check http://www.invasion1944.com )

Best WW2 shoot 'em up: DoD, BF1942 (though I don't like those fast paced shooters anymore)

Good balance with realism and game play can be found in Sudden strike Forever compined with realism pack called APRM (check www.thealliedpower.net (http://www.thealliedpower.net) )

Enough people have praised Combat Mission here so there is no need for me to say much more. Very good game.

If you are an old board gamer (such as I) and like the feel of that type of game. The I recommend that you check out HPS Simulations. Their Panzer Campaigns series is very good and not overly complex. They also have excellent games for Civil War and Napleonic buffs.

Any fan of Gary Grisgby remembers his excellent (for its time) Pacific War game. Matrix Games sells his newest product, "Uncommon Valor" which is a must for fans of the war in the South Pacific. It covers the period from mid 1942 to the end of 1943 and is a great turn based carrier game. Very highly detailed and the best I have ever seen on the subject.

All three of the above mentioned companies do not sell their games in retail stores. You must order directly from them. Most important, is that they are all small to medium companies with great reputations for supporting their products and listening to the feedback of their fans.

VFA 25 were in ww2 online from day one and we stayed for about 18 months. From buying the box and a cd with nothing but a movie on it (you had to download 110 megs right out of the box) to the innumerable things that do not work right, its hands down, the online gaming worlds worst game ever. Just my opinion. Anyone that thinks FB has FM problems needs to spend a day in ww2online during one of their evals, you will come back loving FB and quite willing to accept the minor things.

K pay no attention to all the realism nazi's (no offense guys.)

Battlefield:1942 is a GREAT game. Probably my favorite game right now. It's a freakin blast and it is slowly becoming the most played game out there. There are now two mods out for it as well (well 2 worth downloading anyways) EOD and DC. EOD (ie: Eve Of Destruction) is a mod set in the indochina vietnam conflict, and DC (ie: Desert Combat) is currently set in the Desert Storm conflict. Both of these mod's ROCK. But the original still hauls *** as well. Plenty of people to play against, and there are now two recognized leauges to play in if your into competetive clan action.

I highly recommend it (unless of course your a realism nazi and cant put down your blue prints long enough to have fun, in which case you may not like it because of its relatively large 'fun factor').

I agree 100%. Operational level games are a rare breed and Uncommon Valor is very, very addictive with its interaction of air, naval and land elements. But operational games are not often intuitive, so be prepared to spend some time reading the manual.

MOHAA would be the one, if - at least - the Mutliplayer-Part wasn't so... "quaky" - Jumping off the church, firing BAR and hitting at least 50% a target, half a level away, and when you finally land on your feet, you loose 15 Healthpoints for a 10m fall..... that sux

BF1942 is fun, but not the very best WW2 game.

My personal favourites are

B17 II - The Mighty Eighth

because you really duck in front of your screen, when you hear the pieces of Flak colliding with the plane and the incoming tracers from the fighters, the crew and all. Awesome atmosphere.

CloseCombat - Series
IMHO there is no other strategy game, besides the "MedievalSeries", that deserves the name "RealTimeStrategy" as much as this game!

IL2FB
Of course, but the atmosphere is not as dense as it was, when sitting in the B17 searching the skies.

SilentHunter/DestroyerCommand
Awesome combination on the internet !!! =)

day of defeat for fps,i still somtimes play talonsoft, east front, west front and rising sun(i know its old,but still fun).

After it was refeuled i climbed in.With many manipulations the mechcanics started the turbines.I followed their actions with the greatest of interest. The first one started quite easily.the second caught fire.In no time the whole engine was on fire.Luckily as a fighter pilot i was used to getting quickly out of the cockpit. The fire was quickly put out.The second plane caused no trouble - Adolf Galland (first time in a ME262)

Can't believe everyone mentions MOHAA but not Operation Flashpoint. If you want realistic infantry combat with great terrain and mission editor check out OFP Resistance. With I would say 30mb of downloads you will have any ground unit, weapon, viehcle, or uniform type you want from WW2. That and you can set up any scenerio you want in a fairly short amount of time with the mission editor which as far as I'm concerned is the easiest and most powerful editor in a game. Anyone who wants to fight as infantry man in a WW2 scenerio should check this game out. No health meter, you get hit your dead or badly wounded. Don't lead your squad correctly or get greedy and Rambo like you die and so does your squad. The AI could be better, but that is true with any game.

CMBB looks great when you crank up your graphics card.

As said before this is one of the best games ever released.

Silent hunter 2 is great to if you can put up with the buggs.

Battlefield 1942 is pretty arcadie but captures the felling of epic ww2 battles really well, same with MOHAA.

OFP:R is probably the most "serious" combined arms warfighting game available, and although i like BF1942´s graphics very much, gameplay itself is to arcadish for me, same goes for Mohaa and RTCW. There are tons of addons available for OFP, and some very interesting mods are in the making, i.e. Invasion 1944.

When it comes to testing new aircraft or determining maximum performance, pilots like to talk about "pushing the envelope." They're talking about a two dimensional model: the bottom is zero altitude, the ground; the left is zero speed; the top is max altitude; and the right, maximum velocity, of course. So, the pilots are pushing that upper-right-hand corner of the envelope. What everybody tries not to dwell on is that that's where the postage gets canceled, too.

Great pics!

Operation Flashpoint used to be my favorite game.

But the Ai is pretty crap, the enemy does not supress properly or take up defensive positions, all they want to do is advance.

Multiplayer would be great though with some good teamwork.

I have only ever played it over a small lan (4 players).

I think, that's because the question was about favourite WW2-Games and OPF is NOT a WW2-Game =)

If it was, I'd surely voted for OPF, since it was far better than BF1942 in many respects - not all, but many - and I'm really looking forward to OPF2.

(At least you can't make a tighter turn with a fighter than with a jeep as in BF1942, grrrrrr)
