I found some more diving photos, and you can tell by the name of the file that the photographer dosn't know what it is either.

I love these kinds of photo's. If I ever win the Lottery I'm going to buy a Gruman Albatross, and fly all over the south pacific touring the battle feilds. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif(dream'n)

To be honest I can barley make a guess at this one. That thin wing root looks Japaneese, and the canopy looks japaneese too. And since the wreck is in Hawai, I'm going to guesse it's a Japaneese dive bomber.

Any one else have a guess.

Looks to be a single seat aircraft to me.

Just because it's Hawaii, that doesn't mean it has to be Japanese. Operational and training losses were common off any US airbase. They pull Navy planes out of the Great Lakes to this day
Also, the were US Army airfeilds on Hawaii.

Looks a little like a Buffalo, but I'm not sure.

But if you folk's are into this kind of thing, take a look at this Site:

I reckon it might be a Hellcat. Judging by the shape of that front windshield.

But thats a Shaky Guess at best.

The more I look at that canopy....I'm starting think it's an F4-U, early version. That access panel on the cowling might be of some help figuring this out.

How do we know for sure that the second pic is the wing?

If you look at the sahpe of the windscreen, the position of the canopy where it meets the windscreen, the slope of the back of the fuselage, and the circular panel on the cowling just in front of the windscreen, it looks like a F4U Corsair to me

It can't be a Val because they had telescopic gunsights, and this doesn't have it or doesnt' show any marks of ever having it.

100% Corsair. Note the canopy and rake angle of the rear fuselage.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

Yeah, Looks very Corsairish now. Maybe an earlier Model though? Cos that doesn't look like a Bubble canopy unless the plexiglass is smashed.

Be Awesome to dive those wrecks though

Hi guys,

It's a corsair, F4U-1D or later. I know pretty much this type. I have only 9 models spread all over my house. :-)

All the best,

Just took a look at it and it's a corsair.

Pretty obvious the first is a Corsair The second is not.

It is upside down and the wing is straight no gull wing there, its like a Helcat or Wildcat not sure of it.

The bottom is not enough info to tell.
