(Okay, last one of the day. #2 was far too easy.)

My name is also used on a very different plane that fulfilled a very similar role at a very different place in history.

Like the cute girl who sits in front of you in math class, you'll often find yourself around me but never in me.

Well, P-47 Thunderbold and A-10 Thunderbold II. Both great ground pounders, in very different times. Although I'm not sure how it fits the other hint. It is neither cute, nor is it an AI only plane, which is where I think you were going with that.

B17 flying fortress

There was also a strato-fortress but I'm not sure if that was the b52 or B47

Keep guessing, nobody has it yet. The "math class" clue was added specifically to distinguish this aircraft from the P-47 Thunderbolt, which also meets the first clue.

The P38 also fits the first clue, but I don't know much about the Lightning II's history, so I don't know if it actually served in combat anywhere. Maybe the 6 Day War, but still..

A shot in the dark here, perhaps the U-2?

I think Agamemnon22 got it. The U-2 is an AI plane in here, and both served in the reconnaissance role during different times.
