It has been a fun time off and on since IL-2 came out way back when. I have gone through several name changes along the way, caused some trouble at times and even stuck my foot in my mouth on more than one occasion. I have no regrets over being a part of this wonderful community. I hope Oleg continues to develope flight sims for a long time.

This has been sneaking up on me for some time. All good things eventually come to an end. I will be handing my PC over to my daughters who currently live apart from me with their mother. They have expressed a need for a newer PC and I have offered mine. It will be a while before I could ever afford a new one. I still need to pay this one off but it makes me happy to do something nice for my kids.

There are other PC's in our house but not good enough to run this sim. I will of course be checking in from time to time to see how BOB and Pacific Fighters are progressing. I guess it may be time to haul out the airbrush and buy a couple plastic kits to build in the evenings.

Best regards to all and take care,
Salute to Oleg and team,

Sorry to see anybody bow out of a game and community they love, but that's a heck of a thing you are doing for your kids. I hope they appreciate it.

Just got my copy of July's FineScale Modeler magazine and the cover story is on "Gabby" Gabreski's P-47. Wow! Don't know if you are into planes, but that model is a work of art. I'm into armor myself, and there are some good ones in here. Just offering that up as some inspiration.

Hope to see you back soon. To paraphrase the slogan from Motel-6, "We'll keep a landing light on for ya."

Never say never: the god of computers and flight sims works in mysterious ways and you may well find out that somebody is upgrading to 64-bit and giving away their "old" Athlon 3000+ or P4 3200...

Ask around and ask your mates in RL and online, just let them know you need a new rig, used PC's cost very little and some people cannot be bothered with the hassle of selling them...

You might find yourself back online sooner than you think.

In the meantime I salute you and wish you good luck!

Why not look into building your own PC. It "aint" that hard and doesn't cost as much as buying a ready made job. You already have a monitor and from your other pc's you can scavenge things like hard drives, cdrw/dvdrw/floppy drive, operating system and other software.

This is a good forum thread (http://discuss.futuremark.com/forum/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=techotherhardware&Number=2632476&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=1) with good deal links, so you may be able to find cheaper sources for these products. This was just a fast search on my part:

1. ANTEC Life Style Series Black Case With 380W Power Supply, Model "SONATA"

$95

http://www.newegg.com/app/manufact.asp?catalog=7&DEPA=1

2. ABIT "NF7-S" nForce2 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL
Note at this site this particular mobo has a NON-REFUNDABLE ITEM.Warranty is provided through product Manufacturer Only! stipulation.

$89

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=22&manufactory=1283&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1

3. Mushkin 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - Retail

$87

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-219&depa=1

4. AMD Mobile Athlon XP2600 Processor(Tray) (IQYHA:0351MPMW)

$105

http://www.excaliberpc.com/product_info.php?products_id=3606

Note...the IQYHA combined with the MPMw stepping code means that it will OC easily to 3.2Ghz equivalent regular Barton chip. I have a 2.5 similar stepping OC'd to more than 3.2Ghz and it works fine.

5. ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP -RETAIL

$222

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-286&depa=1

6. Thermalright CPU Cooler for AMD: Athlon XP Palamino, Thoroughbred, and Barton 2500+ and up (Heat Sink Only), Model "ALX800" -RETAIL

What type of rig were you using?

Bellieve it or not, I'm doing an upgrade right now and may have a spare machine very soon. It's not a very good rig for IL2, but maybe you can keep yours and forward a different one to them?

It's a PIII 933
64mb vid card
sblive Value sc
256 mb RAM
Plextor CD/RW
CL 52x CD-ROM
Antec case w/300w ps

It's one of my kid's machine, but he'll be getting my old rig to replace it.

Whilst there are things that can go wrong when building a computer from scratch whether it be due to 'parts incompatibilities' or 'faulty components'. You should know that you can pretty much cut down on 'parts incompatibilities' by researching the components other people are running in their rigs from tech forums. Also 'faulty components' can be eliminated by having another rig at your disposal be it, your own or a friends when testing out new components like ram, cpu's..etc, in a known to be properly functioning rig.

Sometimes when people try building a PC for themselves they are timid as hell and it is to be expected since for 1st timers as we all are at some point we think one wrong move will end up with an explosion. Don't worry about a thing just be methodical and remember your only really plugging stuff in, its not rocket sciencehttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I always plug the computers Power Plug into a socket that has an on/off switch & place it in the "OFF" position to provide the PC with "NO POWER" and thus a well Earthed environment, then I touch the metal case to earth myself before handling any components.

The only tips I have are to read the mobo manuals thoroughly and I've found that the only thing which may cause initial problems may be the 20 pin "System Panel Connectors" not correctly orientated. This can cause teething problems from incorrect HDD activity indications to the system not booting correctly. Always double check your cables!

Good Luck!

Greetings Sod.....what you're doing is, as you know, the right thing. This kind of situation happens to all responsible parents from time to time and it's tough, but as my wife always says, "Good things happen to good people" so please don't despair.

Thanks for so many different things over the time I've known you....being a good teammate, a good pilot, a generous host, but mostly, just being a good guy.

As others have mentioned, chances are someone out there will be in a position to help you and it won't be long before you're back. Until that time, you will be missed.

Kudos to you Thunderbolt!!...perhaps others as well have extra/leftover parts they can spare?

Man, good support group here http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Anyway, the PC I am giving my kids is not entirely free. My ex wife has offered to pay some money towards my dept with Dell. So, in actuality, we have both contributed and my kids will have a very nice PC. Of course this money will be sent in and the remaining dept paid off as quickly as I am able.

As far as building my own, I have done this in the past. I just got tired of the idea and found a good deal last fall during Dell's back to school sale. Of course I proceeded to add a gig of ram, better speakers, etc. to make IL-2 shine. I really like this Dell 17inch LCD monitor.

As I type this I realise I only have till next wednesday before this PC is pried from my hands http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Oh yea, my youngest daughter loves playing IL-2. She is 10 yrs old and has flown on War_Clouds and GreaterGreen using my callsign. Unfortunately they live 3 hours from me so frequent flyer miles are out of the question http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

SodBuster43

carguy_ mentioned lady friends as an alternative to IL-2. Mmmm, well, that means less money towards the PC, mmm. I'll need to find one with a USB port then http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Nooooooo!

Dude, I will miss shooting you down!

OK, time for the community to help! If anyone has some spare parts, we need to hook ole' Soddie boy up! He is one of my favorite targets for God's sake!

You know, seriously, I admire your committment to your children. I would have done the same thing in your shoes (Although I would have gone kicking and screaming the whole way!) It says a great deal about your character, in my mind, and I feel badly for every bullet I ever put into your plane(s)... well, not really on the bullet part. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

~S!~

Look into building something for yourself. With the new stuff coming out now and very soon, staying just under "The cutting edge" would not be as expensive as you think. Especially if you can salvage some hardware (Disk drives, cases, etc) from other machines you may have sitting around. The monitor and video card will probably end up being your biggest cost.

Whatever you do, keep in touch with the forum and your friends here!

As far as the girlfriend idea... You could find one that has her own computer and ask her to move in with you! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sod: Hi, my name is Sodbuster, I'm a Virgo, what's your sign; Oh, and do you by chance own a nice gaming computer? No? OK, nice meeting you... (On to the next chick) Hi my name is Sodbuster...

Well guys, I guess at this stage the proper thing to do would either be to find Sodbuster a pretty girlfriend with a full-spec gaming PC, or ask him if he would like to have any spare bits you guys might have in order to build himself a new rig, unless he finds the idea embarrassing (but why should he?).

I'd love to contribute but I live this side of the Atlantic, have no spare parts newer than 1989 vintage and am seriously skint anyway.

Good luck!
