As with Silent Hunter II, this new game puts you squarely on the side of the enemy. Why is this decision so popular? Why not let us choose?

I am going to keep playing the original Silent Hunter. It's not as good as this game in features and quality, but at least I get to battle against our nations enemies.

From the FAQ:

quote:
Why German side again?
Because the German U-Boat campaign offers the largest submarine warfare background, the most impressive technological advances in the field and covers the widest geographical area.

Germany launched the most focused, extensive and famous submarine warfare campaign during WWII. The fate of an entire nation (UK) depended very closely on the outcome, and the continued fight against the axis power in the European theater depended heavily on the UK. Germany was simply the frontrunner of submarine warfare at the time. So, I think the decision is highly understandable. From your remark about "our nations enemies" I will risk the assumption that you are American. I understand your patriotism, of course, but remember the developers are from Romania, and therefore have no special reason to want to focus on Americans. The submarine campaign in the Pacific seemed more like random skirmishes, IMHO. I would not mind seeing an addon for that theater, though.

Sorry I posted this question twice. I couldn't find my own post. I'm new to this board.

Well, I'm quite a hit! First thing is that we fought the Germans, therefore they were our enemy. Also, since the Germans had such great subs, then why not put us on the American side? What a challange that would be!

Ruffled feathers? Sorry to have done that. My original post could have been more "sensitive" I guess.

Really, I would LOVE to fight a sub war against the great German U-boat fleet. Something to think about.

Yes, I will keep playing the original Silent Hunter on an old laptop that I'm going to aquire soon (My XP machine doesn't support that old game).

But I have another question on Silent Hunter III. Will there be a demo? You see, I didn't like the way the Silent Hunter II displayed maps. Subs were being displayed by large squares. Silent Hunter (the original) had a much better way of showing where the enemy was; as small blips, with the wake of the ships showing. Also, you could zoom in really close, whereas with Silent Hunter II, you couldn't really do that. Very disappointing.

That's why I want to see a demo. I want to see how well the game works.

Thanks.

There will be a demo, near Christmas.

You say you would love to fight a sub war against the German U-boat fleet, but the reality is submarines from both sides hardly saw each other let alone fought one another (except for occasional sinkings).

One of the biggest issues i have with U-571 (dare i even speak it's name in this forum?) is that they show German U-boat's battling it out under the waves, quite how this was to ever have been achieved at the time is beyond me. The assumption that of course develops from this depiction was that during the Second World War submarines were regularly fighting underwater duels, when that quite simply wasn't the case.

Yep, I gotta watch myself. Let me rephrase. I would like to fight the (WWII Era) German fleet of destroyers. Sink the Bismark, and all of that! The whole point is that I really don't like the idea of sinking Allied ships. Although I understand that it's only a game.

Also, after Pearl Harbor, we depended on our subs to battle the Japanese fleet. We had hardly anything else to fight them with. Against superior odds, a desparate battle.

I also like the idea of the limits (although in reality, it wasn't much fun for those fighting the real sub battles). By limits, I mean engines and batteries, and having to recharge. And depth charges and such. Makes victory all the sweeter.

I may download the demo and give it a try, but my original Silent Hunter is still fun to play. Who knows. I may like it, but I still have doubts.

A little optamistic I think. I would not expect a Demo before March.

No great insider information, however, a Q1 release will most likley slip into early Q2. I hope not as this does seem to the THE u-boat sim to replace AOD.

Cheers,

Since my country was neutral, German wasn't my enemy. Nor Japan nor England nor USA nor Italy. So is just all right for me. Furthermore, II WW ended in 1945, 49 years ago. No, sorry, 59 years ago! Wonder were I've the head http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif
Hitler is no long a leader to be followed by the new generations, so grow up!

By the way, often those games have germans as the bad ones -Wolfestein and many others-, and keep being sold pretty well even in Germany. So is just up to you to choose if you want to play this game or not.

Try not to think of it as country Vs country.Look at
it from the soldiers point of view they all had many things in common such as....

they all complained about their respected countries/Gov.
in one way or another(quietly of course)

they all fought valiantly to get back to their loved
ones

they all thougt that their branch of the service was
the best

and many of them died (for their buddies and their
country)

As for me,,,,, Half of everything I own is German or
Japenese and sometime early next year I going to be
owning something Romanian. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Im not in any side in special, but I do think, the WWII German U-boat arm, has been the best in history. Plus, most of the sub-loving comunity, loves German U-boats, you have to watch Das Boot or read a good book and youll see. Also read the dev team explanation.

I really hope Silent Hunter IV is also about the German U-boat arm.

What do you mean 'this Americanism thinking'? I'm an American and, this 'thinking' is not universal thinking. America has fought two wars against the British, just as they have fought two against Germany. I dont here many people talking about the UK as our enemies, and in fact, I seem to remember a recent president call them our "closest and greatest' allies in a speech not to long ago. Americans like every country have generalization that follow them, more so for America anymore than others probably. One thing I'll grant you is, a common thing that Americans have a hard time letting go of certain feelings for Germany go. THe media is a big part of this. I just dont like generalizations running around, German, American or even those evil ones about Tibet http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

What kind of ordinance will submarines get? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif
What kinds of weapons will the submarines be able to outfit with? Will TMA, TMB, and TMC mines be included in the ordinance? As well, will the Kobold torpedo's include the different types created during its development, or the final model?
