Today I was reading about one of the few (I'd imagine) Soviet pilots to fly from day one of the Great Patriotic War until the end.

His name was Vasili Knyazev and he flew 1088 combat missions score 29 individual kills and 9 shared and was awared the HSU on 24th August 1943.

It got me thinking about how many other pilots got into four figures for combat missions flown.

What about starting a list of pilots who got past the thousand mission milestone?

Bad mission/kills?

Actually the figures are quite interesting...

Up until the battle of Kursk he flow 576 sorties he fought 122 aerial engagements and scored 11 individual kills.

In his next 512 sorties he fought 17 aerial engagements and scored 18 individual kills.

That shows quite starkly how the Luftwaffe just pretty much disappeared from the Eastern Front in the later part of the war. The much higher kill to engagement ratio gives you shows that Luftwaffe pilots and aircraft were no longer superior either.

Anyway, anyone that shoots down a Bf-109E in a I-16 deserves your respect! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

German's Top scoring Ace "Erich Hartmann" had 352 victories was scored on his 1405th combat mission and 825th actual combat dogfight.

Best kill average per sortie flown (day fighters) Lt. Guenther Scheel: 70 missions; 71 victories (Russian Front)
