View Full Version : Thinking of putting up a D'ni reference guide

While browsing through the copious journals and diaries in (single-player) Uru, I started taking notes. Then I started taking formatted, hyperlinked notes. All the names, dates, Ages, etc...

At this point I have a nice web of reference information. Similar to the site dnidesk.com -- which is great, but hasn't been updated for Uru yet. I'm going to be keeping mine up-to-date, at least for a while.

Is anyone interested in me posting this on a web site?

And, more to the point, who do I ask for permission? I can add legal boilerplate about "all trademarks owned by Cyan", but it'd be good to be able to say "...used with permission" as well.

You could always post Age notes and whatnot on DPWR.NET (http://www.dpwr.net) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. No registration required http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

You could also go the Guild of Greeters site and find all this stuff already done and formatted and ready for print. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

You can also get some good practice in web site design by making your own site. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I'd love to see a new site and a new pair of eyes on a Myst subject. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Be sure to do as Alah suggested and get a "Permission to use assets" ok from Cyan annnnnnd UbiSoft too, Alah? Not sure about Ubi but definitely Cyan. You will also need to have it posted somewhere on the site as well.

Good luck and be sure to let us know how it's going. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

(psst, Jerle... maz gets credit for mentioning the legal end of things...)

As far as I'm aware, permission to use Uru's assets only requires Cyan's approval since they own the copyrights and trademarks on everything. The material and the brand are under lisence to Ubi, so again AFAIK getting permission from them is neither necessary nor really legally correct.

As opposed to a publisher/developer relationship like Relic's, where Sierra actually owns the material Relic produced for Homeworld and Homeworld2, instead of it being simply lisenced to them (which is why Sierra is the one always putting out press packs and fan site kits and not Relic... Cyan is usually pretty cool about using whatever you can find online or in-game on your site as long as you ask first)

Well, I did Cyan's web form asking for permission, back when I first started this thread. Nov 20th or so.

Haven't heard anything back from them.

Now I have this nice site, run off the cleverest Python script in the world... with an RSS feed and everything...

Email them again using that form only just mention that you've already sent them a "request for use of assets form and hadn't heard back, blahblahblah". They're notorioiusly slow replying but I'm sure they won't fuss. But definitely have the permission prior to the release of your site. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
