Greetings all. I want to upgrade my old Nvida GE2 card and would like hear some suggestions. I want a good card but am not prepared to pay for a top of the line. Perhaps you could recommend some cards that are a notch below state of the art.

My biggest concerns are of course FB and I would like something that can handle the new Doom3 as well (Yes, I confess, I loved Doom2). I have an AMD 1.8 motherboard and one gig of ram. I suppose some of the newer cards might be a bit much for my older machine. Any suggestions?

I had a GF4-4200 for a while and it ran everything very well. Very good card.

I also have a friend who used a Radeon 9000 and thought it was very good as well.

I think both those card would qualify as the low end of the very good cards, right where your budget might fit.

Doom 3 will kill anything but the latest and greatest cards on Ultra High. My 9500Pro overclocked barely handles Medium at 1024X768 with 2x FSAA no AF in Doom 3.

So if your really into Doom 3 I would suggest a 6800GT or X800Pro at a MIMIMUM. These are already expensive cards, without a buget it is difficult to give you a card to fit.

A price range would be a good place to start so we can give you some good choices.

Here is a quick rundown:

ATI---------------------------------------Nvidia

Radeon 9800 pro 128mb--$200ish---Geforce 5900 ultra

Radeon 9600pro 128MB---$150ish---Geforce 5700

Unfortunately, with any of these you will still be CPU limited. A beefier CPU is in your future, especially for FB/AEP and upcoming PF.

Be prepared to turn the settings way down for Doom3!

Good Luck!

****Edit: LOL Cragger, Ya beat me too it!

That's a pretty high bar for a minimum.

I'll be using my new 9800Pro and if that doesn't get me ultra high Doom3, then I'll lower the settings. But I'm sure it will still look great.

If it's all about the budget, then I would definitely be looking at the nVidea 4200 to 4600s, and the ATI 9000 to 9600 cards. They might not be cutting edge, but they will be light years better than what you have. And you will see the difference.

And remember, an nVidea 6800, in many cases, rerquires a new and expensive power supply to run it, so you can add almost a $100 US to the price. The ATI does not require a new power supply.

Ultra high is for cards with 512MB of Video memory. X800 and 6800 users have enabled it some with good results others with a big performance hit.

Thanks all. Looks like I can spend about $200 or so, but if I have to upgrade my CPU then I have to rethink it. Sound like I can get a fairly good card for $200 but will my computer be up to it?

Really it is not the 60 bucks or so that a game costs, its the dang need to keep upgrading equipment that hurts. My computer is about three years old. It was pretty hot when I got it.

I guess D3 is going to have to wait until I can get a new machine.

From what I've seen today there is little difference in Medium, High, or even Ultra high in Doom 3. It all looks great. The only thing I could see what more and better bump mapping, and higher applications of pixel shading.

id say go for the ati 9800pro... if you live in the UK dabs are selling them for 111

ive got a p4-1.8 as opposed to an amd, and ive only got 768mb ram, not a gig like you, and FB runs phenomenally well with the 9800 pro, for the processor... you can have very nice graphics with lots of planes, or astounding graphics with just a few planes

Like others, I'd suggest a 9800 pro. Sit on that for 6 months or so then upgrade your processor to something like an Athlon 2400+ minimum. You can get a 2600+ here ( http://www.pricewatch.com/ ) for about $65 USD.

On the other hand, you may want to get a 9600XT AND a new processor. The 9600Xt is about $130 there too so, combined you'll spend about $200 or so. You'll stretch another year or so out of that rig then. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have a Radeon 9600 Pro and I have no problems with AEP (usually I get 50-60 fps) and I have a casual system. 2.6 Ghz 512 RAM. Still waiting for the Doom 3 Demo before I get it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/353.gif lol. Anyway the 9600 Pro is about $200.00 but if you want a plain 9600 its about 50 bucks cheaper. But for Doom 3 I sugest a Radeon 9800 XT but thats just me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif That will cost ya a pretty penny. Probably about $300-500. Somewhere around there. Final vertict get a 9600 Pro or a 9800. Radeon all the way!
