What rank do you start out when playing the dynamic offline campaigns ? Being different for nationalities I'd just use a numerical scale, say 7=lowest and 1=highest.

Does it depend on the length of the campaign ? A full war VVS or LW camapign began as rank 7, for example, gives you more immersion as you rise through the ranks. Do you instead begin everything on rank 1 so you can control the other members of your flight and dictate how the battle unfolds.

You select it mate (default is bottom/last). Easier to keep up with the squad if you are the leader (hint hint). Plus you stand a better chance of seeing action and being awarded all those nice medals if you're up front.

I prefer to start at rank 3 or 2. You have the ability to get promoted, but you are high enough up to be able to lead a flight or section from the start. Starting out as the CO seems a bit excessive to me if you are embarking on a 3 year tour of duty. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Starting at the bottom is a great challenge, but I get sick of following the AI moron who can't even find a ground target and runs away from the enemy. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

O yea be the leader. When you get close to the Enemy tell your squad mates to loiter hear, get as many kills as you can then let the Ai have some fun.

Other wise thay will steal all your kills. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gif

If I`m starting a new long Campaign then i`ll start as the new guy (from the bottom) and work up. Being told to keep up and watching your leader blow it is all part of life really. How many people in work or whatever find themselves at the bottom knowing they could do better than the boss? Well, that`s how I look at it anyway.

And if you fly the Soviet Campaign where the Germans are overwhelming you`ll find that you get promoted quite fast cos your leaders will always get shot down. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If I do start higher it`s always as Major (midway) It let`s me at least command the 2nd flight. I never start as absolute leader- I like to earn that.

I haven't played as Rank 1 yet (Oberst, Colonel, etc.), but on a side note, can you designate targets beforehand ? For example, your mission is an airfield strike, on the way over there without coming in sight of the target yet, can you designate, e.g. Staffel 3 = attack flak. Staffel 2 = take out fighter cover, and so on ?

no, fraid not. Nice idea, preplanning tactics. Targets must be in view.

I start on lowest too.

Lowest is most fun if you play a long campaign as you can get promoted and stuff. The only one I started as Major is the 110 campaign because you can choose different bombs for different purpose. If you start at low rank you end up flying with the BK3.7 all the time.

Fair enough guys. Don't forget Seafire about that boss thing though, YOU'RE in control of the game and can be the boss from the get go http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif! I like the quaterback position myself, and try to "run" the plays more so then take all the glory.

I always start campaigns at the highest rank. I find it more challenging.

Being the boss means having to make decisions that affect the outcome of the mission in addition to fighting my own plane. I have to manage my assets. And I can make it more realistic than it might otherwise be. For example, if we're flying P-47s (why would anyone fly anything else? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) and we've destroyed the target (a train, for example) and still have bombs and rockets and bullets remaining, I can take the flight on an armed recon (translation: free hunting) for more ground targets. While we're moving mud, I can send an element up high to cover us. Or I can ask ground control for help if I spot a large enemy formation. Can't do that if I'm Tail End Charlie in a formation.

Oh, yeah, as mentioned above, I can sometimes keep my friendly AIs from stealing my kills. Sometimes http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Sure, I prefer to be boss, but I guess I`m a sucker for punishment too! Also, if you fly Russian and start from the lowest rank when you first begin on the runway you get the FULL BLAST of sirens in both ears as the LW attack! Really something! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I'm interested, tttiger, on what commands you use to do exactly as you described. I know if you spot a target of oppertunity, you can order "Attack ground" then a specific type of object. But what do you use to tell one flight to fly top cover for you ? And what are the effects of requesting aid from your base ?

I just discovered this myself playing a single mission where I was flying lead plane and we escorted some bombers and the mission just called for us to fly to a point on the map and return to our airfield. Well, no opposing fighters showed up and I was getting antsy, so on the way back we passed through a concentration of flak and on a whim I ordered "Attack Flak", and darn if I and my AI wingmen didn't have fun ! Now returning from missions won't be as monotonous as before, especially if we have extra ammo. And I can't wait until I get promoted in my campaigns until I'm flying lead.

Yeah I'm in that position now. I'm getting better with it. I just need to hope I can get promoted soon so I can switch out weapons.
