I don't fly the Jug much, but here's what I know...

Turn and burn = VERY BAD

Boom and zoom = VERY GOOD

You should try to damage your opponent as much as you can on your first pass, and never go head on. After the first pass, if he's not down, either use your energy to get away, or take potshots at him with your guns. DON'T EVER FIX ON THE TARGET! The Jug is not maneuverable enough evade an attack at the last second. Always be aware of the enemy around you.

Three rules:

1) Altitude - Always be above your opponent. Unless you have a good teammate then likely any time you get caught not a disadvantage is going to be a very difficult fight.

2) Speed - Jugs perform well at speed (and will better after the patch in terms of roll) and turn very decently at higher altitudes and at higher rates of speed.

3) Firepower - The Jug has excellent firepower if you know how to use it. Practice offline and be sure to take the Extra Ammo load (which is normal superiority/escort load and half load which is default is the ammount used for ground attack plus bombs/rockets).

Icefire and Boosher have it all in a nutshell right there for you. I could not have said it better or have anything to add.

Try to attack from altitude. Keep you energy up by making boom and zoom attacks. Fly with a teammate. Flying alone in a jug is not a wise move for anyone other than a vet.

fly it on the deck and just drop some takeoff flaps when ur turning in behind that yak and you should be alright.

I fly it. You CAN outturn a Fw-190. Its good fun.

But against online planes (La-7, Yak-3, spit, etc.) Stay fast and don't make sudden course changes. Gentle moves in the rule.

Do not follow this advice. He's just looking to pad his kill count.

The Jug was called the Jug because it resembled a milk jug. Not because it was a juggernaught. A jug is a bootle basically... but a big one. A Juggernaught is an unstoppable object. As in "The german juggernaught rolled through Europe to the very doors of England itself."

I have learned more about fighting and surviving in an online dogfight by flying the Jug than anything else....

If you want a charge...fly the jug for long enough to get a 4 to 1 kill ratio.... It can be done!! with patience of course...

Then jump into a Fw-190A-9 and fly it the same way...you'll immediately go to a 6 or 7 to 1 kill ratio if you fly it the same way cause you have such great low altitude speed and mk108's for instant 1 pass kills....then go to a Ki or La-7...the La is a little trickier cause it can't handle those high speed dives....but you'll never get shot down again! Well maybe not ever...but rarely. I tend to get stupid in a La cause its just too tempting to turn and burn.

The Jug is the best, most stable gun platform in a high speed dive of any aircraft imho...if Oleg juices up those .50's at all to where you can get 1 pass kills most of the time then I'll revise my statement about the Fw-190A-9...its just those mk108's are soooo deadly for B&Z...the twitch roll rate usually causes me to miss some targets with the FW. With the jug, I almost never miss...I just don't always get lethal hits ... especially on Fw's and Ki's who are tough opponents.

The thing to remember about the jug, is you often don't get one pass kills and the zoom climb is pretty poorly modelled so before you head down for a second pass, look around good cause you'll have lost a lot of altitude and energy on the second pass. It is always the second or a greedy third pass that I get nailed...never on the first one if I set up properly.

From what I understand, "Jug" is a post war nickname, not one actually used during WWII. All indications are that is was only called P-47, Thunderbolt, and 'Bolt during the war.

The Jug kicks ars abouve 6000 meters. Below that it is a pig . The only plane that can beat the Jug above 6000 meters is the ta152. At 9000 meters the Jug outruns any aircraft in the sim. But dont try to turn against the Ta152 up there. The long thin wings give the ta152 a huge advantage at that alt.
