View Full Version : Oh no... discovered external padlock

Recently I discovered the F6 key in IL2/FB... I like playing on Normal settings with external views etc but this function is in danger of spoiling that for me. I'm now coming back from sorties with 4 or 5 kills - whereas before I was lucky to get 1 or 2. The challenge seems to have dropped considerably.

Hmmmm... what to do.... guess I'll be going realistic.

I'm sure the new breed of Track IR peripherals will come with electrodes to wire yourself up to the mains so that you don't need to ask the wife to hit you with a hammer http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Im sure missing all the FR servers.

With alot of arcade servers around with labels and padlock its difficult to use BnZ planes. Hard to sneak up on someone when you have a big sign saying "here i am" next to you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

hats off to you if you can use F6. in games where any pad lock is available I find them either useless or more harmful than if I stay in cockpit or in cockpit wonder woman view. this is because when I use F6 I cannot tell when my a/c is going to stall or when i am going to black out, thus when I use F6 either my a/c flicks out into a stall/spin or suddenly my a/c stops turning, when I go into cockpit I find my pilot lolly gagging in a black out :O

all of my friends on ventrilo tell me they use F6, I am still amazed that they can use this view.

I wish there was an option to disable F6, but allow external view. I try not to use F6, but it is just too tempting to use to prevent getting bounced, or find those ground-crawling contacts. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif F6 more than makes up for my poor situational awareness. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Never use F anything. Just find a room thats full real and have fun. Externals suck.

Externals might be fun(ny), but that's all

Altitude, speed, manoeuvre and.... CRASH!

My hat is off to anyone who can use F6/F7 effectively, if I try that I usually end up out of control or in the deck.

There is no need to fly in F6 mode all the time. I use external padlock only to check bandit relative position to my ac, after that going back to cockpit mode ...

F6 is a good tool to develop SA.

Cycling through hostile targets makes you clairvoyant.

Actually, during intense dogfighting (is there anything else in FB?) I have been "shocked" by my Logitech Force Feedback stick. WTF you say? What happens is that I'll be concentrating so hard on shooting my target that when the plane gets hit by another bandit or flak the FFB stick jerks (along with the associated BOOM in my ears). In that I'm not expecting to get hit, I'm startled enough to literally jump out of my seat. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif Unfortunately, my wife has witness this phenomenon and simply bows and nods her head. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif I've also been startled the same way when externally padlocked bandit on my tail and I inadvertently hit the ground. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

I'm working my way up to full real (fly in pit exclusively now with TIR2). I would argue that to NOT take advantage of the well programmed FFB effects in FB is to diminish your potential level of realism in FB. Did real WW2 fighter pilots feel flight and combat forces through their sticks? I'm sure they did. Does FFB accurately recreate these forces? Probably not. But FFB DEFINATELY increases the level of immersion that is available in FB. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Once I spot an enemy I can usually take him down... it's the finding and identifying the enemy part I find most difficult.

I love the learning curve on this game... it took me days to learn how to take-off and land in my favourite planes. Weeks to learn how to fly and shoot.

I don't think I'm quite good enough for full-real but I'm too good for Normal settings now that I've discovered F6. I haven't been shot down by anything other than bombers and flak since I started using it and I can shoot down as many planes as ammo allows.

So I'm ready for the next step up... is this cockpit only but with map icons I wonder? Do many people play with that setting?

Hey, why don't we all rip off our F6 keys and then all go out and instead spend $200 on Track IR and fly "totally and utterly genuine real life" settings, and pretend we are real world war 2 pilots???

I can't wait http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

I have F6 configured on my JS and press it around 100 times a min. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I only goto cockpit view (also on js) when I will be looking at an enemy and ready to fire.
It's the best way to get situational awareness, bar none. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I flew for a long time before I found out about the F6 key. I just felt sort of stupid that I did not know about it sooner. No wonder I could not shake someone on my 6.

whats f6?

Yes...

On some of the early servers I used to fly I couldn`t tell friend from foe cos all the planes were a mixed set,
"How do I tell who`s who?` I cried forlornly.

"Use F6", someone replied.

Hmm, F6? What`s that then, I thought curiously. I tried it.

Yeuk! Sorry, not my idea of WWII flight simming. Never again.

I prefer not to use externals, but with regards to cockpit-only padlock (F4) is to also toggle the key that snaps your view forward while padlocked.

It takes some practice/patience in developing good padlock "protocols." You need to know when to turn it off or you'll find yourself totally unaware of other planes in the area.

Also, while I can't argue that it does track, at least for a short time, a plane that is no longer invisible, wouldn't one be looking in the direction (i.e., flight path) anyway? Yes I know, padlock guarantees the other planes' location.

In any event, I enjoy using it, I get kills and I get killed. Ultimately, whether it's about padlock, TrackIR, or what joystick you use, superior combat tactics (and the occassional lucky shot) is more important.

Sorry for the misspelling/grammar mistake - "invisible" should have been "visible."

Why can't I edit my posts anymore?
