I fly it quite often on a online campaign we have going. Have also flown it alot in single player. I love that plane, it's like the A-10 of WWII http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif It can withstand ALOT of beating and every now and then I down some unlucky germans in their 109s or 190s, which I think just gets confused when attacked by a Sturmovik http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gifI fly the Sturmo almost exclusively. I wanted to make myself familiar with one plane and I chose this one. It's like asking the homely girl to dance only to find out she's a great, ahhhh, partner. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have seen the IL2 popular with people who like to have a little rear gun protection when in dog fights http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Its more popular than some..

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gifI have 13 kills in 27 missions in my current Sturmo offline campaign. 109's, 110's and 1 Stuka who got me at the same time (I bailed). You can turn and turn forever against 109's. 110 AI pilots are just idiots. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif

I fly the Sturmo regularly. It's the reason I d/l'ed the demo when it came out. I thought *ah, finally a flight sim with a different kind of plane* and have never looked back.

Damn straight!

I fly the Il2 more than any other plane.

When online, it's great fun to fly the IL2-3M and raise hell with the -109 crowd. They plink away, you soak up the damage, and when they pass by, you give 'em a burst of 37mm canon. Bye-bye. Whole wings come off and the plane splits into pieces. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Drives them nuts. Pretty soon you've got every enemy plane after you. I've had online games where I lead in kills for quite a while against -109s. 190s, and those arcade Zeros.

You should see the smack talk those guys throw down after blowing three of them out of the sky in short order. great fun.

The reason nobody seems to fly the sturmovik is because it's not uber, but there are no bugs with the plane, and it's working like it's supposed to.
However, if there's quite a bit of armor that has to be destroyed, you'll see me either using a P-47, a P-38, or most likely an IL2-3M with those nice 23mm cannons.
Very cool plane with a very nice amount of armor!

I like the old Sturmovik for a nice change of pace and must say, when flown in a tight group of three they can be quite effective. Here is one sortie stat from a mission I flew last night on our server where four of us flew into a tank battle and changed the course in of the entire battle in about 10 minutes.

Why fly the Sturmo when you can fly a Lend-leased P-47 Jug?? I can do far more g'attack damage with a Jug than I ever could with a Sturmo. Then afterwards I can fly against German fighters at their own level. And get two or three 109s after killing all sorts of ground targets. All in one mission/sortie!! Try that in a Sturmo. The Jug is the most efficient and versatile g'attack plane in AEP, followed closely by the Me-110.

The Sturmovik is too slow. If you circle and linger over a battlefield, you're flak-bait. The airframe is darn near impossible to destroy, but one or two flak hits and one of your control surfaces will be damaged.

For ground attack, I prefer Stukas (hit hard and get out) or P-38 (HVAR madness then join the air battle). The P-38 also has fire extinguishers in its engines--a real life-saver if the flak is thick.

Oh, yeah. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As has been mentioned already, these monsters can take a lot of hits before anything important breaks. Additionally, most of the variants are very easy to fly -- no bad manners at all, even when the control surfaces are damaged. These both make it a winner in my book, as I tend to loiter over a target far longer than I should. (I feel guilty if I RTB with ammo left.) As a consequence, I'm usually sporting a good amount of flak-induced damage by the time I get back. The Sturmos are real tolerant of abusive landings brought on by damage (as in, jammed flaps, no rudder, fuel leaks and shredded wings -- my usual landing configuration online) and can bleed off speed quickly to avoid having to make a second pass on the strip.

It's my favorite plane for general use, especially the series 3/early 1941 model single seater. Those 23mm cannons will penetrate 25mm
of armour at 400 meters according to the infomation I have read. Sure they are slow compared to fighters of later years but if you
build missions based on aircraft of similar years ( 1940--- 1942) they hold their own very well. I love it when the wings of axis fighters /bombers fall away after a combined
burst from machine guns/cannons, and they can out turn the fighters.

I fly the sturmovik online when I can't get a decent 30's airplane. I find that enemies tend to overshoot me [they must be thinking "harmless bomber" not "aircraft with lots of big guns on the front"]. It is great fun for both tank busting and fighter killing.
