Just figured these were good enough to post for you folks.

Not a combat sim but pretty nice I'd say.

Looks awesome. But I'm gonna pick apart the one thing that bothers me, those marker lights glow pretty bright for daytime, not knocking FS2004 specifically as its the same way in FB, there's gotta be a way to do those lights better in flight sims.

FS2004 looks great, no doubt. The terrain modeling does seem to show some improvements, but still bears some resemblance to CFS2 terrain, the water sure does. But, who cares, really. It's the PLANES that count. FS2004 is supposed to be a celebration of flight history, and even have the Wright Bros flyer...the worlds first ultralight!

As far as the AC (that's Anti-Collision) lights go, I can't imagine anything more difficult to "simulate," than light.

Some of the best planes are add on planes. Some are freeware (like the Aero Commander) and some are payware (like Cpt. Sim 727).

None the less MSFS2004 is much improved over 2002. Not the same as FB but still alot of fun in a different way. I'm usually not doing sommersualts in a 747. In most cases you fly IFR and MSFS2004 does a great job of that, by far the best simulation around for IFR flying.

fs2004 is a great sim, wish ms would make a dogfighting sim with the fs2004 engine, the terrain would look just as bad if 1c did it, remember cfs and msfs's have the whole earths ground modeled not just a square little map great shots dex msfs2004 did a fantastic sim and world terrain, high alt looks great in fs2004 also http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I just have trouble warming up to modern aircraft.

They are all so cold and businesslike, not style, no character, and they sound like, well, jets....

BP El,

You know there's no reason to fly modern aircraft in FS2004 though. With addons you can fly almost anything you want. My two favorites so far are the P-51 reno racer, and a beautiful B-25.

The straight line flying is not the perk to Flight Simulators for me. It's applying ATC with Ground Control, Approach Control, Center, the tower, etc. Applying emergency situations, weather changes, practicing your navs and shooting approaches.

I like to use actual (real world) approach plates and basically fly instrument approaches, flying the approaches as close to the real world plates as possible.

Flying from city to city using navs and working through your intersections of radials is OK too. I especially enjoy flying Tacan and flicking from station to station trying to plan for the shortest possible routing through a myriad of ADF stations...LOL

If you're contemplating becoming a for real pilot the Flight Simulator will help you a lot. I haven't really worked with the FS2004, but I understand the ATC is improved along with being able to apply real weather.

2D cockpits are dull, but afterall when you're flying instruments that's what it's about. I pretty well consider the Flight simulators to just be instrument trainers.

Still can be Ok for a couple hours occassionally. Learning to fly navs is not an easy task to learn, but once you've got it down...not much too it. Current navigation equipment makes it darned easy in most cases, since modern navs instruments are basically computers.

No, they're universal location emitting beacons I downloaded from "crazyfreeware.com". My plane, while en route, is passing emissions out to space and awaiting response from extra terrestrial beings. I'm awaiting the enhancement that will allow me to tie all spare CPU cycles while I'm flying directly into the SETI system so I can do my part to help us make contact. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

As for FS2004, I fly Spitfires, BF109s, Boeings, Airbuses, and have so far flown over much of the Americas, Iceland, Greenland, UK, Italy, France, part of Africa, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Casablanca, and most recently Turkey, each flight starting where the last one ended.

On my world tour I use jets to get places, then take free flights in WW2 or modern Military jets (Migs, F16s, Corsairs, Spits) where I take some time to see the scenery.

In the next week, I plan to hit many of the places IL2 is based in, such as Novvorossysk, Crimea, etc, and will of course take pics.

The breadth of geographic coverage available in FS is second to none. The terrain modeling out of the box is very well done, and there's downloads to improve upon it. The number of downloads available DAILY just amaze me. The freeware planes like the one above are worth the price of FS themselves!

Anyone who things the terrain looks the same as CFS2 or 3 has obviously a) not tweaked their machine right or b) not flown outside of the [flat] USA.

When you fly into Portugal from England, there's different landclasses, ie. different kinds of buildings, different kinds of ground, heck, different crops of farms!

As for the thrill in flying "straight line" flights, believe me, if you set up to fly a long VOR navigated flight from one cool city to another (ie. Toronto to Atlanta, Toronto to New York, the Andes in Chile to Bogota or something), contend with real weather that changes as you fly, receive directions from ATC, follow your instruments, intercept an ILS glidescope, autopilot the plane through final approach, arm spoilers, deploy full flaps and increase the throttle to keep the right speed, lower your gear and get ready as you see the flickering "rabbit" through the fog, and finally come in, see the awesome night sight of glowing runway lights, then take over control, watch your descent rate, touch down, hit the reverse thrusters and slow, then taxi off, all in a plane like the 747-400 I showed, when you exit the flight (which may have taken 2+ hours of time), you can't help but sit in awe for a minute and say "man, that was @#$kin cool!".

It's like the buzz you get after a long online dogfight when you arrive back to base victorious and touch down in your wounded plane. A little different yet exactly the same.

Ah sims... Gotta love 'em. FS2004 is unquestionably one of the best, if not the best on the market right now, for sure.

Yup, FS2004 is great, beautiful and good fun. It's also useful for pilots like me that cant really afford to fly, but can keep reasonable current in instrument work with the realistic panels.

i had fs2004 for about 2 months now. i dont play it much though anymore. I had fun with it for about 3 weeks or so. One thing that i really hate is the fact that you can just play the game. I mean you really miss alot if you dont looking for downloads. I think i might have spent more time looking for downloads and a plane i could really enjoy flying than actually playing the game. And i will in no way pay $20 for ONE plane, not because i cant afford it but because i think its ridiculous.

cd_jakevas, go find these top-notch planes and tell me if they don't change your perspective. Try AvSim.com as I'm fairly sure they're all there:

POSKY CRJ 200
Meljet 747 Megapack
FlightCraft Airbus A320 or A340-600

The Posky is probably my favorite plane overall given the great VC, great FM, and general great quality of it. Very nice to fly.

The Meljet is a really serious model, as in really stunning. No VC, but as you can see above, quite fantastic.

The FlightCraft Airbuses are great and feature Virtual Cockpits too.

If I weren't flying flights from one place to another aiming to see nice scenery and use VORs, I probably would have stopped flying so much. Flying one place to the next makes it more interesting, and so does getting used to a few good planes, IMO.

Kind of like nearing mastery of a few FB planes... Once you know them it's much more enjoyable to use them.

Yea, I was like that for the first few weeks, mainly because there is so much stuff to fly I guess. Now I'm to the point of limiting the planes I fly, to come to a better understanding and mastery of the individual plane's charachter.

Still for me, my big draw to flight sims is the real world components, like navigation, engine and fuel management, stuff like that. Those kind of things are what I enjoy most, mainly because they apply to reality directly.

Honestly I become bored with constant dogfighting because of the same reason. It's great fun, and a great way to enjoy the night with the guys online, but it really doesn't have much function in modern reality.

fly online with Vatsim ( http://www.vatsim.net/ )... you'll never look back. If you've never done it before, it can be quite confusing to set up, and daunting trying not to make a mistake in following ATC instructions, or reading back IFR clearance, for example... but there is an excellent tutorial on there to get you started.

I never fly offline now, the FS2004 ATC can be pretty stupid.

Try it! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Dex, if you dont mind me asking, roughly how many addons have you applied to that game? Did you have to pay for any of them? Where did you get them?

I've added many many planes, only bought one, the Captain Sim 727. I've added terrain mesh for much of the world which I paid 25 bucks for a year membership at www.fsfreeware.com (http://www.fsfreeware.com). Great deal!

I've added clouds that lower the FPS hit, and therefore been able to turn up my cloud detail, and I added the constellations, which is pretty cool for night (real stars I think it's called).

Other than that, I get most of my stuff at fsfreeware.com or avsim.com, and I download planes in batches, then evaluate them and either keep them or remove them.

I've also done a little bit of tweaking in the FS9.cfg file, mostly through experimentation, to get my terrain the way I like it.

http://www.flightsim.com

is also a great download site thoughit gets busy and I always have to try to log in a few times. It is handy having the many search features though, top 100 files of the year, top downloads for yesterday etc. it is easy to keep on top of new releases this way!

There are many pay addons made by private party developers, but there are also thousands (tens of thousands??) of free addon downloads, some look amazing but don't fly great, some fly great but don't look great. . and then there are those that do both!!

Excellent (visuals, panel, and FM) Pay-ware:

-RealAir Simulations: 172, and SF-260

-CaptainSim: all sorts of jets, A-4, L-29, Migs etc.

-Mid Atlantic Air Museum (donation to restore the aircraft that you are downloading!) DC-3 and B-25

-DreamFleet: Archer is the oly one I have tried, but I am sure the rest are quite nice too.

and there are many more.

Freeware:
tons, too many to list!

DSB Design Eurofighter Typhoon is what my earlier screenies are of, and it has a very nice FM though there is no virtual cockpit and the the panel is a little awkward to use. (I hate needing many windows open for an IFR appch!)

I know this isn't the right time and place to ask this, but since we're all sim-geeks...

Can anyone tell me how to set up MS FS2002 to start without the engine running? I'd like to run through the complete pre-flight checklist, but it's kind of meaningless when the engine's running once I get into the pit.

Oh, and does anyone know how to set up a flight plan that starts and ends at the same airport? I'd like to do a navigation flight that takes me via some other places and then back home, but it won't let me plan this in-game. Do I have to scribble everything down on a piece of paper...?

Thanks! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You need to taxi to the gate or parking area you want, then shut the plane down. Save this as a flight, and each time you load it, it's right there ready for a cold startup. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

All you need to do is set yourself up as you want, save that flight, and then make it the default flight.

So load up the airport you want, the plane you want, taxi/slew it to your tie down or hangar of choice, and shut down, turn off the master, the mags, and pull the mixture, . . .and then go up to the "Flights" menu, then click "Save Flight", name it, fill out the description if you want, and then click the box that says "Make this the default flight"

The next time you start up you will find things just as you left them.

I havent tried a flight plan for a flight that doesnt land an airport other than the home base, I usually just file a plan from departure to destination, and at my next departure re-file. . .just I like I do in the real world.

And the freeware aircraft are great.

PM Rock. I have no idea.

On an unrelated note, I just flew from Istanbul over to Donetsk Ukraine. The flight was brutal! The landing was near zero visibility and I nearly crapped myself flying a 727...

This brings me directly into IL2's territory.

Anyways, just a few more pics. This is a payware CaptainSim 727 in my beloved Air Canada livery.

Hey guys. I really liked that picture of the air canada 727 cockpit. But how do you get the cockpit to look so nice, with such a wide view. That's the one think I HATE about FS is that the view seems to always be screwed up. When I sit in a 172 in real life i can see all the way down the runway, but in FS I can't see crap. How do you get a more realistic view from the cockpit in FS as is seen in the air canada pic? That pic makes you feel like your in a real cockpit.

I went to a local aviation store and flew their addons. I picked this one and am really glad. I tried a Dash 8, a DC9, Airbus A3x0 professionl, and some others. This one is great! There's over 175 add-on skins for it at AvSim, and it comes with a load-out and skin management utility which makes adding them a breeze. The cockpit is photorealistic, and the skins out there are top notch. It's not perhaps as technologically advanced as say a Boeing 747, but it's not supposed to be given its era. The FM is very challenging to say the least, but that's a good thing.

Aces, the wideview in that cockpit (and others) is done on my machine thanks to my video card (Matrox Parhelia) and three monitors. It makes FS-ing soooo much different.

Thanks for answering my questions guys, I'll give it a try.

One more question popped up, this one's for all you real-life pilots. How do you pronounce "Mayday" as in the emergency call? Our flight instructor pronounces it "med'e" with short a's (sounding like in "merry"), where as I always thought it was pronounced "mªd'ª" with long a's (sounding like in "may"). IL-2:FB uses "mªd'ª" for the American pilots, but I can't use that as an argument in filght school... Oh, yeah, I'm in Sweden, so we learn the Swedish and international system. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I've tried a curved screen with the projector and it worked well, but it's still only one monitor's worth of info, not three since the projector can't handle more.
