WP! Nice

Especially for the Japanese...they used to drop them on bomber formations timed to go off in the air.

Ouch. Anybody standing around those planes was well and truly f*cked about a second after that photo was taken.

The U.S. used tons of them against Japanese cities. The Japanese used a lot of wood and paper in the construction of houses and buildings, so the incindiary bombs worked very well at causing fires that would sweep through a city.

That bomb was an M47, many of the incendiaries dropped later were type M69, using napalm. I think they mixed both types, along with GP during the B-29 raids.

The article said the primary use of M47 (Kenney Cocktail as they called it) was to supress AAA fire. They'd drop these, and a low layer of smoke would block AAA LOS for any AAA that weren't actually taken out by the WP (or suppressed due to crews taking cover).

The japanese also used them as AA weapons.

I know we'll get parafrags, but what kind? The 23lb, the 6lb, or both?
