My system is basically the same as yours, perhaps a bit slower.

AMD 2000XP
416MB Ram (PC100!)
Sound Blaster PCI512

Today I upgraded my video card from a Gf4 Ti4200 128MB to an FX5900se 128MB. With the Ti4200, I could play on a blend of high/excellent settings 1280x1024x32 with no AA or AF enabled in 30fps range. After installing the new FS5900se, I can play (same detail settings) at 1280x1024x32 with 4XAA and 4XAF in the 40+fps range. It was a worthwhile upgrade I think.

Your milage will vary of course, depending on things like your OS, system optimization, and the resolution you run the game at. With the old Ti4200 card, FB was exceptionally smooth and enjoyable, I never had issues with fps drops during intense online combat, so your card should be fine if you run it at reasonable settings. My reason for upgrading was not to improve FB, but FS2004, where I've happily doubled my framerate to the 30's, while at the same time gaining 4XAA and AF, with higher autogen and detail slider settings.

One note on your hardware, be careful with the onboard sound system. My board has the AC97 sound onboard as well, and it was a drain on performance. Adding the Soundblaster PCI512 easily added 10 to 15 frames to my FB play. This may not be universal, but it's worth being aware of.

I think I paid $40 or so over a year ago, I'm not certain that it's still avaliable now. Some people here use SoundBlaster Audigy cards, there are some that are less expensive models around, but I don't know anything about them.

Still, I've no idea if it would matter in your system, you'd just have to play FB and see how it goes before deciding.

Two things: I found a soundblaster pci-512 for like 10 dollars on ebay. Is this right? and is there a better sound card for about 30 dollars that is better? I'm addressing this to someone who knows.

I have AthlonXP 2000+, 1024MB DDR 266,old Abit KG7 board, GF4ti4200128MB and old SB PCI128. Running at excellent all time (even on FinishGulf online map) and never have a need to display fps counter, seems smooth to me big time...but perfect is on average below 20 fps.

Altitude, speed, manoeuvre and.... CRASH!

I've had a few Blaster PCI's, they're old and cheap these days but still do the job. The downside is, while they are cheap, they do have a tendency to have conflicts with other hardware especially VIA chipset motherboards.

Philips make some nice soundcards, I think they're fairly cheap these days. I'm in the UK and have seen them for 20 - 30. Also Sensaura cards have a good rep, I think they've been dropping in price too.

Good Luck

I just bought a soundblaster live 5.1 0220. Is that good enough. See my big problem is that when i fly over a big city, the fps slows down. I know the sound card will fix this because when i disable hardware accelerarion in dxdiag, i flew over the same city and no slow down. The problem with that setup is when i fire a weapon, the sound is not instantaneous like it is when hardware accel is on. I will be upgrading either over the summer or in the fall(especially now that the pci express is coming out)

Ah ****, I just found out that the sb live is not compatible with windows xp. Well, good thing i didnt pay for it yet and can still cancel my order. So, what is an equivalent to a soundblaster live that will be compatible with windows xp?

I mean you can`t play this game on XP cuz winXP takes 300MB of memore or so and the rest isn`t enough to run FB.I got only weaker vid card then you,I know what I`m talking.

Carguy_, maybe there is something different between our PC's, but I've run WinXP for the last year or so and with only 416MB of feeble old PC100 SDRAM! I easily get the performance I posted above with this configuration. Putting things on HIGH/MID settings blend is even better, I usually run in the the 50's in the cockpit while shooting.

Adlabs, I really hope this works. I just completely turned of the ac97 audio from the bios and i am getting 35FPS at the LOWEST.
Full harware accel on from dxdiag:15 fps over city
No hardware accel from dxdiag:25 fps over city
Ac97 shut off in bios:35: fps over city
Should i expect 25 or 35 fps when i get my new turtle beach santa cruz?(i canceled my order on the sb live) Thanks guys

As I said in my first post, the mid 30's is what I averaged with the Ti4200, so your about par with what I was getting. Flying low over cities is the lowest framerate you'll have probably, it is for many players.

BTW, I think that FB gives better performance in OpenGL mode, not Direct3D. Experiment to find what's best for you.

I am really no expert on "tech" stuff, so I can't say what fps you'll get on your system, but so far it sounds about right. If you post in the Community Help forum here, there are guys who can give you "real" help in tweaking your setup.

Lastly, I hope your not buying hardware based on my words, because I've got no way to judge what's right for your system. I can only share my personal experiences. If you are considering any type of hardware purchase, buy from a dealer that allows returns and refunds without restocking fees incase you don't like the product after you've tested it.

LOL I only have 256MB of SDRAM. Somebody is faking somebody here. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and...I just found today that 256MB SDRAM loads FB Finland map faster than it loads LOMAC mission with only one jet.

...yes, I got LOMAC today, thinking of returning it. ...runs *fine* on my system with low settings, and will be far better after upgrade, but LOMAC simply does not have the specific Features I am looking for -- so back to Flaker 2.51.

Just a couple of things about posts above.
1. I've run all Il2 variants on both 98SE and XP and I've seen very little difference in performance, so not sure about comments above on XP?
2. I have a SB 5.1 Live and it runs fine (although it's not the best sound card by a long way) under 98SE and XP, so again not sure about comments on compatability above?
