View Full Version : FB Intense dogfight video

My first atempt at an FB video!

It doesn't really tell a story, just a few nice dogfights in a Hurricane (no longer my plane of choice, this is an old online track).

It's all recorded from the cockpit view, cropped to wide screen (to get rid of online text messages and speed bar) and using a little mouse movement to track the planes being chased.

It was captured using Fraps 19D (www.fraps.com), (http://www.fraps.com),) and edited in MSPro 7 with 'Old film' filter added.

You will need the Xvid codec and a good connection to download and view (15MB clip).

Comments appreciated.

The old look of the video is amazing. Maybe could have been better not to use the closer gunsight view nearly all the time, but anyways great job.

Wouldn't run on my machine but I found where I could download the xvid codec. Runs fine now.

Nice video - good shooting!

Nice touches. Interesting that you ran it a 2Xspeed. Might want to turn off the in game chats as it takes away a bit, but still very nice effort. The B&W effects were well presented. Keep it up. S!

Thanks for comments all, much appreciated.
I thought the 2x might get noticed.
The video isn't actually recorded at 2x speed, it is all at normal speed, but there was a lot of chasing that I edited out and had to fast forward to the killer shots. When I set it back to normal speed and then started recording the 2x speed would remain on the screen for a few seconds. Well spotted, but I couldn't edit the text out, nevermind.
Good tip about the chat box, never even occured to me to switch it off, I suppose I could just go into a normal online game, reduce the chat box to nothing, then my saved tracks would have no text box? Or would I have to record my tracks with no text box initially? Whatever the case I wouldn't have to crop the video as much, thnx.

I think the scenes in the video was really bad considering you're diving down to shoot at aircraft that's already had their wings blown off. Oh and you spray like crazy.

You're entitled to your opinion and thank you for your comments.
I follow the planes down because of the kill stealers. I've lost count of the birds I've taken wings off only for someone else to swoop in and take my kill with a single shot, but that's another debate which we won't go into.
I think it also makes the video a little more dramatic but that's my opinion.
As for spraying, well it was an unlimited ammo server. I play on all kinds of servers and where I don't need to be conservative, I'm not. What's the point on unlimited ammo?
Do you have anything good to say at all?
Time and effort went into this...

Nice video, but crazy action. That's how you get killed, yanking and banking at lowlevel.

I Lurve yanking and banking at low levels! Especially in the YAK which rolls really quickly. I don't generally Vulch but I do like to head towards an aircraft ready for take off at high speed, then then pull a couple of rolls right over their head, looks awesome in track playback from the ground aircrafts position. I will put this in my next video....

Well the "old movie" effect was fairly nice.

Your logics are understandable but when you're going to make a movie it should try to be more "real"(?). Just my opinion anyhow.

Also it was apperant that some of the scenes was taken from a "newb" server where everyone is 2 feet of the ground chasing one another. To an ace like me (bahaha) it does not make me feel that the movie could in any way portray a real dogfight situation.

Nice to watch a sh1tty movie than no movie at all though. GJ.

I scare the pants off noobs and vets with my low level manouvres. You will find many pilots crashing trying to keep up with me in a low level chase. I use terrain and buildings to my advantage in a chase and being the 'ACE' that I am, I never hit them. I function at all levels.
One sh1tty post out of some good ones is to be expected I suppose.

I wasn't trying to make it look 'real', I just thought the old film effect would be nice and I thought the chat messages were distracting which is why I cropped them out.

Sorry that the guys are attacking you. The movie standards have been raised and the guys are a little spoiled.

My personal recommendations would be to think of movie making kind of like the pros do, a series of unrelated clips cut to "appear" related. I never make a movie without a full script that includes scenes made in FMB "single" player mode. This mode allows the most flexibility to "stage" things the way "you" want them to be. Static camera, limited numbers of objects etc.

I always use quick record which produces .ntrk files that can run with any of the patch upgrades to come. I always "turn off icons" on the screen so you get zero triangles/numbers over planes in your movie(adds realism).
However, you can leave the triangle icons on(not the numbers over the planes) and start the recording after hitting F2(outside view), when you replay the .ntrk the icons will not be there, no cropping needed. Also I turn off the in game chats when recording the clips to media for a movie(adds realism).

No need to speed things up through non action moments, wehn you can just cut that part out and "blend it" into another view/scene that show s the action you want.

These are just a few of my personal recommendations to you. If you have more questions I'll be glad to answer. S! Keep making movies.

I thought this movie was great. The B and W effect was awesome. I personally liked the spray and pray shooting that you did, it added a human aspect that not every pilot is an ace! I would love it if you would make another movie in black and white with a more realistic tone to it, even though this movie seemed very real to me. Please keep making movies.

Fun video /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Keep making them. The music and B/W video really made the film. Sure would be cool to have gun cameras, wouldn't it? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I can encode in mpg no problem, but I'm not too keen on quality/filesize. The WMV's I've seen are quite good, but I have been unable to encode in this format.
Can someone give me a guide??
I downloaded a Windows Media 9 encoding pack or something from Microsft, but it seems to encode it to AVI not WMV, and a test online would'nt stream...?

Hi all,

Thanks to Phalcon51 for the link to the XviD codec. You simply install the codec (takes all of 1 minute to download and install) and then WMP can play with that codec. Don't know why it can't find it itself, though.

I thought the film was fun to watch. It is not at the level of some of the recent rash of films, but it also is not meant to be. Anyone with broadband can download it and have a look. I thought it was nice enough to add to my server for a while:

http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/flightsims/oberstguncam/Movies/FBscrag1.avi (15.2MB)

Scragbat, if that's not okay just let me know and I'll take it down.

Cheers,
Mike

Go right ahead m8, be my guest.

I'm flattered that you think it's good enough to host.

It was my first shot at FB video making and I know it's not brilliant, but I had a lot of fun creating it.

My next movie codings will be in WMV (know how to do them now I have latest Movie Maker), so they will be more accessible...

Many Thnx
