I am considering upgrading my Ati 9600XT 256mb card to either an Ati 9800pro 128mb (reduced to 150 in the UK) or an Nvidia FX5900XT 128mb (about 140).

My present card is my first Ati after progressing through Nvidia mx440 then the Ti4200.I ask for a couple of reasons:

When I put the settings to perfect on the Ti4200 I got very nice reflections on the water, including hills in the distance when at the right angle, unfortunately the frame rate was a nightmare at this setting. However I do get a good framerate on perfect with the Ati9600XT but the reflections are limited.(A small point admittedly but it rather impressed me).

Secondly I have found that the Nvidia drivers appear to be generally more stable than Ati Catalysts and most games seem to be designed to run on Nvidia cards.

My current system is; AMD Athlon 2.4Ghz,512mb RAM,Ati 9600XT 256mb.

I know that the Ati9800Pro has had 125 cut from its price so its very tempting.

Will I notice much difference, and if so which card should I go for?

Opinions?

Hello Bo, if you at all can, I'd recommend trying to round up the extra cash for an X800Pro. Dabs.com have them listed from 284 inc VAT (although not yet in stock). From the reviews I've seen the X800 series will be a significant advance over the 9700/9800 series and will probably become the regular top-end card for about two years (as the 9800 series were), so you'd get good use from it.

Anyway, I've got an X800XT on order, so you can always have my 128 MB 9700Pro after that if you wanted http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Regards,

RocketDog.

EDIT - useful comparison charts for 9600 - 9800 here: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html Check the quality benchmarks because those are the ones most appropriate to flight sims (i.e., useful levels of FSAA and AF)

Carguy,a 360 watt will do also, will do GOOD

I just came from a guy running an OC'd barton 2800 and a 9800PRO from sapphire,so 300 to 360 watt minimum

I made the move from 9600XT to a 9800pro.

Dont expect an amazing difference.. sure its smother with higher frame rates but thats wot you are paying for. You will notice more of a difference in Lomac if you play that.

Just remember that 9800pro is a "middle of the range" card now, I would be tempted by the new ATI/Nvidia offerings instead of buying another "mediocre" card.

Just $0.02

Ps ,, I purchased the Hightech 9800pro with the ICEq cooler on it, and it works really well. My 300watt PSU blew after a few days but all was OK and I replaced it with a 550.
