Like have a List of U-Boat men with their records, so you could pick a new guy with experince or potential.

If we will have Sailors coming and going, then it would be nice to pick them.

Although, I don't know if Captains were able to pick new members(Officers) in WW2.

I hope we have the option to EDIT their names if we choose. Or I hope the they have a whole boatload of names in the Random Name File.

In B17:TME I always name my bomber crews after people I know http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Considering the high risk of getting wounded, shot down, killed, captured and so forth in a B-17 mission,

... naming the crew after people you know is a good or bad thing in that setting?

Nah, sounds real boring to me. I'm not much for paperwork/administration such as looking through a whole bunch of data merely to click at the one with the highest score. I sincerely hope I'm not forced to wade through loads of data just to get a decent crew.

Well Paperwork is a routine billet (job) procedure of any officer Naval or otherwise...get use to it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

Captain in all services got and went where they were told. They did not have any input regarding the crew, they got whom ever command saw fit. It is my understanding that they had a reasonably stable crew, however I beleive they also regularly lost crew, more so the officers etc. They were generally promoted and shipped to another u-boat.

With regard to your idea, with no disrespect I think that 'powering up' my boat with the best crew is gamey, and would be a very monotonous task.

Cheers,

I like that idea. Would be nice to name them ourselves also to help give us a personal attachment with them which makes some of us more careful about loosing them. I personally would name them Torp 1,2,3 , AA guy, Engineer 1,2 Etc.. because if skills are applied I want to know who to put where properly. I hope they give us the option to manually repair to help speed up the time% a bit. That would be nice than sitting underwater with the enemy above. It gives us something to do rather than us loosing patience and fighting the ship that is hunting us above. Likewise with the reloading. I I like how the Silent Service damage control looked. Would be nice to be at that map and click on a damaged area of our boat and we would be brought to that room in a 3d environment and manually help with reloading or repairs. Just dont drop the wrench! LOL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
As always there should be a option for auto everything as not to loose people who dont want to go into detail.

I like the idea but in most case wont new crews most always be fresh green sailors? All veterans will be kept on there current subs. So the only thing to pick from would be the new kids. Fine if you need to replace a dead crew member but being able to pick all veterans each time seems to me not realistic. Sure there maybe one or two but thats it. The kids have to learn! The hard way! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Hi osros,

The veteran crewmen might not be as few at the war's outset as you suppose. For ex., the Spanish Civil War was an opportunity for many U-bootmen to gain experience (yes, in those wonderful Type II "canoes").

Sounds very unrealistic to me ;-) But it would be nice if crew members gave eachother nicknames.

Just curious: With so much detail in the game I wouldnt be supprized what they would do with a dead crew member. Maybe they will show one wrapped in the traditional mummy cacoon and slide them off the kitchen's meat cutting board. Would be interresting to see. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Another choice for dead crewmen were empty torpedo tubes; read "Sharks and little fishes" for more (disgusting) details.
As well said by Drebbel and Teddy Bear, we are discussing of an unrealistic thing, as captains had to embark who the Navy ordered.
Otherwise, I'd want Topp as IWO and Buffalo Bill for AA gun.

the crew assigment function should work like the draft function in Madden.

sometimes you get a stud
sometimes you get a dud
sometimes you get a dud that turns into a stud
mostly you get folks who are average

As far as historical accuracy, the only influence I could justify over the crewmembers might be when transferring to a new boat, being able to select a few old crewmembers to accompany you to your new command. Other than that, crews were asigned at the whim of BdU, and the Oberkommando der Kreigsmarine.
