With the BoB coming up, a question came to mind:
At what time during the war did the Luftwaffe stop bombing England?
And when was the airspace over southern England considered 'safe' from Luftwaffe to fly over?
Does anybody know?

The 'blitz' sort of ended(ish) in 1941 when the Nazis invaded the USSR but there was sporadic bombing right up until the end of the war. This really culminated with the V1 and V2 attacks of 1944 to 1945 which was a blitz in and of itself because Hitler was still sore at the British for not suing for peace in 1940 and not giving up the fight until it was won. The V1s and V2s were described as his 'vengence' weapons.

Actually, there seem to be two ending dates. The official "postponement" of the German invasion was Sept. 17, 1940, but heavy bombing continued until May 21, 1941 when the Germans moved most of their bomber resources to eastern Germany in preparation for Barbarosa.

The most intense bombing of London and the Channel ports seems to have taken place between Feb. 19 and May 12, 1941...months after the decision not to invade England. Some people say this was to cover the redeployment of troops and a/c on the eastern front.

Raids continued until '44, but they were usually small numbers flying under the radar, climbing to drop their bombs, and diving away to return to Europe. I believe these all but stopped just before D-Day. By that time, the LW had their hands full protecting their own supply routes and bases. And, as mentioned in the last post, V1 and V2 attacks continued until the allies overran the launching areas in Germany and western Europe.

Winning isn't everything;
It's the only thing!
