This is a hybrid question/comment/request.

Now I assume the controls are the same as Exile - from what I saw of the WWC convention demo, the hand is either centered dragging the camera, or free, and pushes the camera at the edge.

So the question (sort of) is: if this is wrong someone who actually saw (or built) the game correct it.

So If this is correct then the right mouse shifts between modes.

Well I think it would be good if there was an entirely separate, second "option" from the game menu. The first option is Exile style, switching between lock and free mode.

The second option is what I want to request. The Uru 1st person controls. Which if you think about it are perfect.
The difference to Exile controls is:
- In Exile, a right click toggles the mouse modes. When you go from free mode to locked mode, the cursor snaps to the middle and stays there.
- In Uru 1st person, you HOLD right button which disappears the cursor and allows you to drag the camera as in Exile locked mode. But the good thing is: when you release the button, it goes back to where it used to be rather than staying centered.

I found this really useful in Uru - its a lot easier to go from clicking anything you like to whizzing around the camera.

Please consider!!! (Don't replace Exile cursor, just have an option)

i tend to agree: the mouse normally controls free movement of the cursor (with scrolling at the edges) while right dragging rotates the view - rather than a disorienting toggle of modes. But as an option of course http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

aside from this you wouldn't need to show the cursor while you're panning (as EMS pointed out URU doesn't) because you cant click when you're dragging - in this case you wouldn't need to worry about snapping, just as long as it appears where you left it.

perhaps you guys are working on this but it would be nice if the speed of the panning when the mouse moves off the edges of the screen accelrated depending on how far the mouse is pushed off the screen, this might lead to a move fluid and controlable motion - i noticed in the demo that sometimes there's a bit of waiting while the view revolves to your point of interest http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Sounds like an ok idea to me too. I think the 1st person mouse control worked well in Uru, but...

...Uru didn't have a lot of dragging things from one place to another, and from the video clip I saw, revelation might.

Since you have to hold left mouse button to drag on object, if you also had to hold the right mouse button to rotate the view, it could get a little annoying moving things around a lot.

As for just left clicking an object and dragging it to the edge of the screen to make the view turn - that sounds like it would be clumsy and frustrating as you wouldn't be able to see where you were going.

So personally, I would stick with the exile option of being able to toggle the behaviour. Actually, now that I think about it... it would really suck having to hold down the right mouse button for the entire game to get the view to move.

Maybe you should do a poll or something to see how many people are actually interested in this alternative mouse control to gauge whether it's worth developing.

Honestly (and not to intentionally dash hopes but rather inform people of the realities of programming), this late in the development cycle, with the engine already completely coded and final renders being plugged in, the odds of getting this implemented, even if everyone here supported it, are practically nil.

yes it does seem rather late for these kind of changes - but you never know - the dev team may be tweaking cursor behaviour from beta response right this moment http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

on the other hand Ubi have been hard at work thoroughly developing Revelation for a extensive period of time (the cursor in particular!) and i'm sure they've debated and analysed reactions to countless aspects of previous Myst titles, have thought about this problem a considerable amount, and have already settled on the most appropreate solution.

of course, there is never a solution that can satisfy everyone (the new Rev cursor being a point of debate http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif) so i think EMS's idea of this optional navigational behaviour, or some alternative variant(s) could ensure a wider acceptance of the most significant navigational element in the game.

but again, considering all we have heard in the way of features, customisation and adaptability in Revelation (this is a non-spoiler forum so i won't begin a list http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) Revelation looks like it's going to be undeniably revolutionary and i have no doubt the team at Montreal are way ahead of us with this and many other niggles thoroughly covered

Thats what happens in realMyst, but not in Exile. Yes good feature.

Nebodin - I see your point. OK why not make it that when you pick up a draggable object, THEN the camera snaps into mouse-lock mode so you can drag it as normal?

Alahmat - you may be right. If it were Exile, you could do it right at the end - the screen control is a very superficial part of the engine.
Revelation looks a *bit* more complex, but I wouldn't say chances are nil.

Sure.

Anyway, Nebodin, I'll start a poll on this right now and see what happens. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
