S!
I have been slowly trying to get the hang of the a5 offline and am pretty please with the new Dm for this plane, minus the busted gunsight bug yet that is being addresed i assume. Looking on the forums here it seems that pilots think the A5 is pretty much a worthless plane now to fly against the other planes in online. Is it true that this plane has been "nuetered to the point of why fly it" online? Looking for opinions on this. I have waited so long for the CDM to make this bird competive online, now I hear that it is worse off then before in terms of speed and what manuverability it had. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif
Please tell me that what i have heard through the rumor mill and pilots reports are wrong and this plane is still good to fly.

Definitely NOT!. The A5 is still a force, even online. The key is, you still have to fly it correctly.

I had several 2 kill and 3 kill missions against Spits online the other day. I actually like it better now, but that's just me.

Well, on servers that keep to historical planesets, I always fly the A-5 when offered. It doesnt stack up against an La-7 so on the servers that allow all planes, I elect to go with something a little faster.

I think the A-5 is numble (FW standards that is), has great firepower - well - should have again once the 20mm issue is resolved, and I love the new DM - except the magic revi seeking bullet thing.

I think the combination of not having 30mm (Like the latewar 109's) and the revi thing is what keeps people out of the A-5 right now.

It is a great matchup against the 41-42 Spits, and can really hold it's own.

people that dont fly it now arent really FW fans, but more or less (Best plane at the time so they can get as many kills as possible without too much thought) kind of people.

Real men still fly radials!

As an allied pilot I fear FW 190 A5 more than Bf 109 G2 or G6..

wooden planes, iron men

Thanks for the info guys and your feelings on this plane. Glad to see that the A5 is still a great plane to fly and respect. I heard they made it faster then what Oleg had it originally posted as at sea level of 570. Also one last question to get the most should i use cem for it or auto prop?
Thanks

The plane has not been neutered at all...but in the end it is only a 1943 plane and so will always be at somewhat of a disadvantage against late war types.

It is overlooked because as Fehler said it does not have 30mm cannons, is not as fast as the A9 and is not nearly as effective an E fighter as the Dora.

That being the case though it is still my favorite Anton and I will fly it against anything out there, albeit with the knowledge that I must be extremely careful when engaging because of it's more limited performance.

I like the A5 alot...it was the plane I flew most of the time in IL2 original and even when the A8 came out, I tended to stay with the A5. I like it's handling better than the later series Anton's, though admittedly it is hard to say what that handling really is. To me it just feels right and thats about all I can say.

Lot of people think it is more agile than the later Antons...I really can't comment other than I find them to fly very much the same in tight maneuvering. I can't say that I've ever noticed that the A5 turns faster than the later Antons...but thats just my opinion.

I like the A5 quite a bit and if you really want to know what E fighting is all about...fly the A5 against the La7.

That'll learn ya http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi,

I fly the A5 and A9 and find the A5 to be more nimble and less stall..er...spin prone but the firepower is obviously less effective.

That is with reference to v1.22, of course, as the cannons have been porked in AEP for, presumably, some good reason; a porking which I hope will be reversed in the upcoming patch.

So, in answer to your question, the A5 is quite deadly online if flown in the correct manner and particularly against aircraft of a similar 'era'.

Cheers,
Norris

I use CEM when I fly the Antons, at 100% prop pitch it allows for a higher speed and probably faster acceleration, climbrate remains unaffected as far as I can tell.
The A-5 is fast, really fast! 586km/h at SL on the Crimea map(@ 100 prop pitch).

When it comes to aircombat, I'd rather be lucky than good any day!

I agree with Fehler and Zen on this one. The A5 is still pretty darn good. I love taking out a full bomb load, running a jabo then getting alt for hit and runs.

In '44 servers you have to be careful. The A5 has less of an advantage. I was in an A5 and got badly chewed up by a P-38L the other night. There wasn't a lot I could do. Luckily a friendly (in a Dora) came to my rescue.

CEM is recommended. I use 90% pitch for climbing, 80% for cruising and 60-70% for very high speeds. Radiators closed until she gets hot.

My impressions of the last two months revolve around dawns. Pink dawns, grey dawns, misty, rainy and windy dawns, but always dawns; first light. Shadowy Spitfires and quietness . . . . Geoffrey Wellum, First Light.

A-5 may have suffered a little bit in maneuverability in AEP. Before (in 1.22) the A-4 and A-5 where much more forgiving/nimble than the A-8 and A-9, now the A-5 seems sort of in the middle.

Having said that I love the A-5 and I still think it is the best plane in the game in '43 full-switch servers/planesets.

In '44 planesets I prefer the A-9, D-9, or Ta-152. Out of those I think the Dora is probably the best but I think the changes in weapons/DMing hurt the Dora the most for obvious reasons.
