I'm not flying with people who fly with the Cockpit off... That is what you mean, right? Cockpit can be turned off? Externals are really a must in a Coop so you can see others after you die, though. Even so, you'll probably see me there http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh, there are no fighter pilots down in hell...

Cockpit on. Not optional. The only way to turn it off is to play elsewhere http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

First campaign is l'vov '41. Low-rent planes aplenty!

I'd like to play. Do I need some sort of comms though? That's pretty much been my barrier lately. I can't afford them right now, and I wouldn't know how to set them up if I could.

Please advise.

Well, out here in Hawaii (GMT -10)that's 7:30 pm and perfect for me.

But, frankly, the reason I don't fly on line during the week is that there aren't many folks on at that time. When I get home from work. HL is a ghost town.

The Europeans are fast asleep, the mainland US people are going to bed and the Aussies aren't quite home from work yet. Only Pacific Islanders and there are very few of us.

Coops are a long way from dead but that is the worst possible time to try to attract pilots. Great for me but not for many other people.

And, since Badshot is a Kiwi, we'd probably have to put up with him http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'll stop by Hyperlobby. If you're flying I'll gladly join you.

Oh, and Red Russian: You can pick up a headset with a microphone for about $20 (or less). Teamspeak, RW, and all the other coms software is free and pretty easy to use(although it may take some tweaking).

tttiger;

Really? I guess I was assuming the worst...didn't realize all I needed was some generic headset/mic. Didn't know software was so cheap either. Well, that solves it! I guess I could count on some help setting the stuff up if I need it...Thanks.

Sounds good, except.....

EXTERNALS. Get rid of them. For those who want to admire their paint job, make a track of your combat and admire it offline. People need to make check turns or have wingmen to check their six. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Good idea Baldie i might drop by. What`s with Redeye again? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

On the side not: lose padlock and icons, external views compensate for both IMO. Just externals, minimap and speedbar. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Great idea Baldie. Right time for me on the Pacific coast.
Personally I like the planeset and options. It always amazes me that some people won't fly with certain options on. Take the cockpit. Just because I can go to "Wonder Woman" veiw doesn't mean I have to, and I'm not imtimidated by those who choose to use it. In all honesty I doubt that using "WW" really gives that big of an advantage. I fly with my cockpit on always, regardless of the settings. However, while I don't mind icons I can see the point of not having both for immersion and the fact that they obscure the target at times. Lately I've been flying w/o icons and speedbar, but I'll not complain if they are on.

I'll stop by tonight.

You really don't know what you're talking about.

The advantage in situational awareness afforded by flying Wonder Woman mode is obvious. Planes can't be obsured by wings, noses, bulkheads, not to mention canopy braces.

Also, experienced pilots know that Wonder Women pilots pick up several % points in gunnery accuracy because they can see below the nose. In HOs, in tracking shots, hell, in almost ANY shot, the ability to see through your nose makes every gunnery pass at least half easier.

It also defeats historical escapes like bunts, barrel rolls and scissors.

All you have to do is yank the stick and drag the plane through the target area. Arcade in the extreme.

I never claimed to know what I was talking about, I was stating my opinion.

quote:
the ability to see through your nose makes every gunnery pass at least half easier.

This assumes the ability to set up an accurate firing solution.

quote:
All you have to do is yank the stick and drag the plane through the target area.

That in itself can be suicidal unless you are flying in a very easy mode. If I "yank the stick" I usually end up in some kind of stall or spin.

I also hold the opinion that this is a flight sim and as such should be played with cockpit on. I suppose there are "good" pilots that fly "WW" but why? I agree that "WW" is an arcade mode which is why I don't fly that way with only two exceptions........
1. IL2 Air Racing. Here you use the additional view angle to avoid collisions with other racers. (Yeah, yeah I know, the Reno air racers don't have that option)
2. Scouting maps in the Full Mission Builder. I get some great ideas from 1000 meters away.

Besides, I don't worry wheather another flyer is using "WW" or not. A good pilot should be able to outfly anyone who uses "WW" as a crutch. I say that based on the fact that when I flew the IL-2 demo I used "WW" and really sucked. I changed/grew into to cockpit on and became a much better pilot. (read harder to shoot down but still a fairly easy target)

Not necessarily true. Say you see a head-on coming. If you're smart, you know to avoid it, for many reasons. I know a couple of tactics to not only defeat a HO, but to gain an advantage from it.

All of them are negated by WW view, simply because I can't position myself under the nose of the enemy. He doesn't even have to go inverted to find me.

same with externals. You can *say* that if you're used to flying full cockpit, some guy using externals should be no problem. Tell me that when he uses externals to time a break turn to the 10th of a second, or just splays out and causes a collision (which normally affects only the faster, trailing aircraft).

I've seen all the dweebish goings-on associated with arcade settings. No thanks. I'd prefer to just get beaten fair and square, if I'm going to lose.

So Stiglr,

Are you saying any newb straight from BF1942 can easily beat you in a scissors when WW view is enabled?

All silliness aside...

If I host a coop tonight it'll be much later than 12:30 EST. I gotta reinstall AEP cause something got corrupted and I get an error when certain planes are loaded.
