View Full Version : AI reactions to Damage

I was flying my BF110 campaign last night and i noticed that the AI seem to react very strangely to damage. While attacking an airfield, i dropped my bombs and was in the process of getting the hell out of there when i took a lucky flak hit. My right endplate/rudder got blown off, and my right engine failed. I featheed the prop, and continued on my merry way home. whiel flying back, i was watching another flight of 110's hitting the same field. One of them got a flak hit in the right engine which just made pretty smoke(eventually it would fail) but the AI descended and crashed. Another Ai took a flak hit that blew off a wing tip and engine, but he made it home just fine. Does anyone else ever see this kind of odd stuff?
Also, does the AI have a different DM than the player? on several occasions i have seen Ai aircraft get holes blown in wings and engines lit aflame, but they seem unafffected.
thanks

I'm not sure about AI DM but suspect it's a tad simpler.

The appearance of inconsistent response likely has some foundation in fact, but it is also to do with the skill level that the AI are set to. Novice AI will run for home with very little provocation, while Ace will battle on at almost any cost. Average and Veteran are scaled accordingly.

i agree on their strong sensitivy...
i hate it watching attacked b17 trying to fly a loop and then stalling after only being hit in one wing and smoking a little...

Yeah, why do bombers do that whole steep climb thing? They're best chance of survival is pulling tighter into formation, not jumping straight out!

What I always wonder is why the AI will find the biggest forest to head to when they are going to crash land

Do AI mature during a campaign? Does an "individual" progress from novice to Ace?

Good question - I'm pretty sure they do increase in ability based on their kill count.

Regarding damage effect, the other plane that was hit by flak could have taken a lot more damage than you did. If fragments killed the pilot or cut control cables you wouldn't see any visible change - other than the plane crashing of course http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

The most annoying damage related AI behaviour is the way one of your ace pilots will take an engine hit which will guarantee he crash lands and yet continues on and on further and further into enemy territory until his engine stops and he his declared MIA

loosing 50 kill aces to friendly mid air collisions during normal flight is also very annoying http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It would be nice if damaged AI would proceed to the nearest friendly base rather than over flying several of them in a vain attempt to reach their home base only to crash into a forest short of their home base. Damaged AI, just like out of control range R/C aircraft, always seem to head for the worst possible landing area. They avoid large open level spaces and head for forests and hills and one damaged near shore will head out to sea rather than inland.

I also find it annoying that even set at "ace" AI flying Me262's will bail at the first sign of engine flames. While it might be the most prudent thing to do I have on several occasions I have managed to fight on and even make it back to base after an engine fire.
