Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Patrolling because of North Korea? HAH! That's a good one. We're here to protect the South Korean's right to buy blue jeans and concert tickets, and the right for them to protest at our front gate! I won't go more into it... I'm sure I'm not allowed to say those things as an active duty air force (notice the lack of capital letters) member. Me personally, I work on airplanes. Over and over and over again. Can you guess I hate my job?

Having lived in Arizona for over ten years, the "Dry Heat" issue has always been a running joke in my family. Best line I heard on the subject was one I heard from a top sergeant in the 4th ID at Ft Hood (not dry heat there); when the subject came up, he claimed that the first casualty of the 'Desert Shield' operation was a kid from Phoenix in the 101st who was 'accidentally' shot by his buddies when he said "...but it's a DRY heat" one time too many.

My experience coming back from Hawaii on leave and trying to run my usual five miles one sunny June morning (it was only 95 degrees F at 7AM)is that heat stroke from dry heat is just as brutal as heatstroke from high humidity when it comes right down to it. The major advantage is that since your perspiration evaporates immediately, thus giving those underarm bacteria nothing to work with, you'll smell better when the paramedics arrive. That can be crucial when seconds count...

now THAT's a dry heat! I've been out that way a few times during my misspent youth, and most recently taking the 'back way' down to I-10 from a visit to Prescott, having forgotten that the road down from the Rim is 25MPH most of the way. On the plus side, I got to show my wife and sons the glory of the desert night sky. Living on the coast their whole lives, they had no clue there were so many stars out there.

How do you like it down on the Cape? My Uncle use to have a place in Eastham and there is a beach down there called Sunken Meadow I believe, it maybe another but there was a old Liberty ship off shore about 3 miles and the Navy and Air force use to bomb it with practise bombs and straffe it. There was 50 cal shells all over the place. You could watch while you were swiming in the water.

I really don't know. We've been in the same squad for five or six years and I'm sure he's told me but that Maritime accent is very thick http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif All I know is it's a round house and on the coast abiout a five hour drive from Gander, Newfoundland and there's lots of snow and from his front porch he can watch bald eagles pick up baby seals from the ice.

It's one of the few places I haven't been that I really want to see.

There's another Cudgel on line in an Italian squad. I don't think they have eagles or seals there, though. And he has an entirely different accent http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This thread is interresting in many ways! It shows among other things what countries that are used to communcate in english. There are wery few german and french repliers to this thread, as they probably use the il2-sites in their own language. There are no replies from africa or native asians, as I could see, wich I find a litle bit surprising. There are amazingly few answers from Great Britain too, in my opinion..

I myself are from Fjellhamar east of Oslo, Norway. I am the 6th norwegian to reply to this thread if I counted correctly, relatively many as we are only 4.5 million norwegians in the world as we know it..

There are actually many Chinese players. I know many but i also know most cannot speak English. They do have their own sites but I can't read Chinese. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Some of the guys speak English and translate for me and the Chinese players. I would guess that CHN, JG/54, and JG/53 combined have more than 500 players, some diehards and some not.

Hmmm. Let`s see.
Leicester. Inner city.

When I look around I see buildings, buildings and a carpark! A few trees.
Ah, and blue sky!

Actually, the people here are good folks, if a bit inward-looking!

I live in the south-mid part of sweden in an area swamped by a known dangerous narrow river "svart√¬•n" = Blackriver. A part of this river is located and surrounded by the 3 biggest lakes in sweden. "V√¬§nern" "v√¬§ttern" and "hj√¬§lmaren" the names are about 1000 years old an no one really knows what they mean ,but the lakes scare the heck out of the locals. Thats the place.
A good thing is that I live within machinegunrange from olli72...yes... the screenshotmaker. I often make dots and smudges on his screenies....so if u see a dot or smudge out of place...then U know its a piece of "ob art".

I still have the two crows...they sing me to sleep every d*mn night.

There was 50 cal shells all over the place. You could watch while you were swiming in the water.
Well Hello and Welcome to the Neighborhood

S!

I love it on the Cape! There isn't much practice like that anymore, but there certainly is always activity over Otis AFB.

Oh well, I wish they where still doing that so I could watch :)

To JG7_Rall,
The ship is still there, but the last time I saw the ship it was in rough shape. This was in the late 50's and early 60's that the services were still using the ship for practice. Tracker and Orion aircraft were used if I remember correct.
At low tide you could almost walk out to the ship, but the tide comes in fast there and you got to move fast to make it back to the beach.
Take easy.

To JG7_Rall,
The name of the ship used for target practice was the SS James Longstreet and it's on the Bay side of thew Cape, and Neptune and Tracker aircraft, not Orion aircraft were using it for a target at that time. Check out Noel Beyle, he wrote a book about the SS James Longstreet. Some of it you can see if you use Google Search page.
