I love the sound in FB because...

I bought a new soundcard solely to enhance my FB experience and the only game it doesn't work properly with is FB!

When I'm in my cockpit I can hear an ant fart in a field four miles away but I can hardly hear my own engine!

Ive heard so many horror stories about sound with FB... i stick to my ac97, it works and sounds pretty good compared to some of the more expensive cards out there, which seem to weird out from just looking at IL2

Well, we had some patching issues in the past, but now with the 2.01 or even with the 2.02 (which I guess doesn't exist, but kinda plays real good for something that's an illusion! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif ) my Santa Claus sound card produces very good, very even sound. Of course, I just use regular stereo speakers or a heaset, so surround anything does not come into play here. I think you might have friver issues or maybe your sound settings are wrong for your card and / or speaker setup.

Now with more fiber! It is newer & and even more improved! It's Luckyboy's Guide For Complete Users!...

Guys! You;re just not getting it are you.

OK here's another:-

I love the sound in FB because...

Six patches and eighteen hours of tweaking later - it still sounds as bad as it ever did. :P

OK serious question now then:-

Those of you that reckon they have good sound now - do you hear the sound of your bullets hitting the ground or an enemy plane?

Lol EO, please post your entire sound setup for both windows & FB. What drivers are you using & what acc. level are you running? Is your Audigy placed in a slot near your vid card? Does it share IRQ with any other device?

I hear niether.

I think the sound is fantastic in FB and only ever had the problem with the cannon's in the US planes back a while ago (they fixed it in a patch).

Just a plain old Audigy (the original) BTW.

Hi Monson74.

My drivers are the latest from Creative (plus the patch thingy) the acceleration is at highest (as if I lower it I lose EAX capability in ALL my other games that it works fine in BTW http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

As for FB settings I have tried them ALL!

I've tried all the default ones which pertain to my breed of card anyway and even tried some manual edits of my own. I've tried hunters too - I am now confused though as to whether the sounds I'm hearing are right or wrong.

The reason is this - I had a C-Media onboard card before which was supposed to be EAX compatible (but not) and when I enabled extensions in FB I'd hear some excellent new effects like bullets ricocheting off the ground and the enemy planes I'm hitting and kind of whizzing past my cockpit BUT my own engine sounded like it was about eight miles away encased in a lead tomb - so I flew with extensions disabled and lived without the cool effects I craved so that at least my own engine sounded normal.

So now I have an Audigy2 - the sound of my own engine is great but I still don't get no ricochet sounds. Oh yeah! And I hear NO FLAK explosions either! I do hear the sound of my own plane being hit - but that sounds wierd - kind of echoing and metallic - maybe thats how it's meant to be?

So I guess something isn't right about the sound I'm hearing - or not hearing...? Or is it?

I'd really give: http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/ a shot if I were you. IMO they are way faster & really own Creatives drivers totally. Running at full acc. + extensions sort of muffles the sound on my system & I lose the 3d effect. Try full acc. in Windows but minimal acc. in FB setup. The hit sounds are metallic & kick a tin can like but I think they are supposed to be this way. I only hear flak when it's very close but this depends on your attenuation setting in the config file. I've set it to 4. I've never heard any ricochet - I thought they had skipped that since the original IL2 lol. As for IRQ I'm not a wizard on this - in fact I need help myself but I understand that you need to place your sound card in a PCI slot as far away from your AGP as possible so they don't get to share some ressource. I've just done & it makes the system faster & more reliable. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Like the Stones said some 30+ years ago - 'You can't always get what you want..' Il2 is like life. Full of compromises. We all know it kicks *** in so many ways but the sounds, it's always sucked. No effort was put into the sound - all the effort went into eye candy and other sim stuff. When you play games like Call of Duty, Bf1942, Medal of Honor, etc.., you reall hear how bad il2 sound is. Amazing if you think about it. SOund is probably the easies of the sim components to integrate into the game. I basically disabled my SB Live 5.1 and went with the onboard AC97 sound because one - it actually sounded better and 2, I got 10 fps improvment. Imagine that - sound accelerator not actually improving performance of the game, but sucking it away. Let's just hope they've learned how important sound is and that BoB will buck the trend. After all, one of the most legendary things in WWII was the sound of beefy Merlin in Spitfire. Shame to have all that beautiful eye candy yet have that engine sound like a flying saucer from Atari's "Asteroids".

The sound effects is something that I really hope is improved upon in PF, after all they are making a lot of new aircraft.. hopefully they'll come with new sounds as well http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

As for how the machineguns should sound, maybe something like the ones in.. hrrmmcfs2hrrmm.. more metallic and powerfull?

It seems like sounds (except in the demo, if IIRC) in Il-2 have always been porked, and it is a shame.

I have had, in Il-2, good sounds, no sounds, crackly sounds, fading sounds, etc.

But there are other, IMHO, important aspects of Il-2 that have been complained about since the beginning ( the "no-immersion" GUI, for one), and haven't been addressed by Oleg and Co., and probably never will be, even in PF or BOB.

And why should they be addressed? There is no competition at this point-CFS3 is a joke, IMO, and what else is there?

*sigh*

I hear ya. I upgraded to a newer pc and now have and Audigy2 sound card. I lost lots of sounds I had with my old 550 and it's soundblaster card. I don't hear the wind, flak, passing planes, ect. I'm waiting to see what PF likes before I try to get better sound again and until then I'll just frown at the lack of sound.

Hi Guys,

When you say that there has been a lot of discussion about sound in IL2/FB/AEP, you are right. However, at least some of the things you are calling bugs are not actually bugs - they are meant to be there!

Before the releases of FB and AEP there were realism-whiners saying that it was ridiculous to hear distant (more than 20 m away) flak bursts, passing planes (more than 20 m away) or other planes' weapons. From my limited experience of unsilenced WWII fighter engines, I tend to agree with them. Those things are LOUD.

So, now, when we fly AEP we seems as though we are coccooned in a world with only our own radio, engine and gun noise. Everything else outside the cockpit seems to make almost no noise in comparison. That is not a bug - that is almost certainly more realistic than hearing ricochets, other planes on your 6 etc etc.

Maybe, and this is just an idea, Maddox Games could consider an "arcade" mode for sound as well as graphics and flight models. This way, people who love sound effects (and there's nothing wrong with that) could switch them on if they wanted. Could be a problem in online play though - external-to-cockpit sounds can give a real advantage in dogfights.

Have fun!

C-Media = Sensura sound settings in FB setup. The only minor drawback is you have to click apply under in-game sound configuration every time you play (including hitting "refly" when online) to get rid of the echo.

I tried this a few weeks ago on a whim because the echo was driving me nuts. I could hear ground units puttering along on the othe rside of the map. I could also hear enemies starting thier engines. No fun.

I switches to sensura (spelling?) and the sound is sweet, although a chore to operate.

All object sounds are encrypted only Oleg and 1C can adjust them.

ExtremeOne I have audigy 2 and mine seems fine.
But I only placed card in mobo then whent to creative and only let it find my card and only install the drivers automaticly for me.

I had trouble when installing from CD and including all the extras.

My game settings are Win200safe settings. I feel it sounds the best and It doesn't hurt FPS much at all.

I think there should be an option for this in a future product - it should be a difficulty setting like the others & thereby determined by the server/host. FB has by now cost me two sound cards but the Audigy is pretty much up to the task IMO. I just don't see how anyone could run this sim with the sound maxed. With a lot of patience & many compromises I have a very good sound playing FB. Only issue now is the fading engine sounds when firing guns but along with the patches there have been fewer planes where this happens so I can live with it.

He lol - now if we only had the SAME problems all of us it would be easier to lobby for a permanent fix or an entire new sound engine. Some say Audigy rocks - some say it sux - some say the same about other cards including onboard... There's gotta be something really wrong with the FB sound since so many people have probs. I've never seen anything like it in any other game I've owned. It's a shame really when you look at all the sweet-sweet eye candy this baby can offer & the great interface & gameplay.

It's not the drivers Extreme_One

Go into Start -> Run -> Dxdiag
Select the sound Tab and set Hardware acceleration back one or more notches http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif that should solve it.
It won't solve the ****ty (IMAO) sound system but at least it will make it bearable...

I don't know what the deal is - but the sound I have for FB is incredible.

Especially in the p38 - it's awesome.

This sound right now is the best it's been, it's been tremendous ever since Oleg fixed that silly sonar sound.

(I have a soundstorm and audigy, I'm back to my soundstorm, I personally like it better.)

Bearcat - I agree with you - I use headphones, and I crank it up and love the immersion.

Cranking the acceleration settings down a notch disables the use of EAX sound in my other games though.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

FB is the ONLY game that sounds wierd!

I still love FB though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Guys! You;re just not getting it are you.

OK here's another:-

_I _love_ the sound in FB because..._

Six patches and eighteen hours of tweaking later - it still sounds as bad as it ever did. :P

OK serious question now then:-

Those of you that reckon they have good sound now - do you hear the sound of _your_ bullets hitting the ground or an enemy plane?

Funny you should mention that about the enemy plane
Yes, I can (as it was put) "hear an ant fart from 4 k away" but I cannot hear the enemy plane. I should, I feel, hear it at least zoom past me at/ from any angle.
I can feel an enemy plane buffet my plane when flying headon at 300m to either of me (MSFFB2)but a friendly plane doesn't do this and it is not all enemy planes that do this. (A P40 in this case enemy/ friendly) The same buffeting won't occur from a side approach.

Oh, and speaking sounds concerning bullet hits and ricochets, I could be incorrect but I'm pretty sure one should hear something and more especially one should at least feel something.
Lost 3/4 of my tailplane the other night and giess what ?....didn't feel or hear a thing.

Shouldn't we make a list of sound related problems with FB & mail it to Oleg? Or maybe start a "sound bug thread" so we could get an overview of things. I'm pretty sure these bugs are case sensitive from one machine to another since none of us are playing FB on identical systems but there are some bugs/problems that more than one person have. Just an idea.

Well, I've got XP Pro with SBLive card. I run at full hardware acceleration, but only with headphones (no 5.1 system etc). I don't seem to have engine noise fadeout when guns fire, can only dimly hear passing aircraft and the occasional close flak burst.

I am very happy with the sound generally. Works fine. Every now and then I unplug my headphones and listen to the engine roar through my woofer! The whole room shakes.

Before starting a new sound thread, it might be a good idea to check out the past sound threads in the forum, if you can get the ****ing search tool to work.

Have fun!

Hi,

Extreme One - sounds like you have the same luck that I do - I'm the sort of person who these kind of things happen to, also!

However, it sounds like (sorry about the pun) I actually have had good luck in having a **** soundcard....for once. How ironic!

On the subject of sound, I've set my sound up so that the balance is 50/50 etc but when I run FB, I always get a muffled sound out of the left speaker when I pan left (and quiet sounds out of the right speaker). Conversely, panning right, gets me the same sound as in the pit (but quieter on the left speaker). I know it aint my setup cos it's ok when I play tunes through winamp/Media player etc.

Odd.c

Cheers,
Norris

I was still useing an old SB something-or-other I scavanged from an old PC when FB came out. The audio was O.K., but Team Speak wouldn't work with the game running.
My old squad mates got tired of my monkey finger typing so the XO sent me his newer SB live card.
I got TS working and the sound was still O.K., but evertime a Naval Vessel fires its guns it sounds like its in the back seat even though its not vissible to me.

First time I heard the Tirpitz fire its main guns I was in a Dogfight, the sound was so loud I was convinced I had been hit. I hit F2 to look for dammage just in time to see the shell wizz by and rip my wing off.

S! I feel better now that I understand that AEP changed some sounds believed to be unrealistic. I still think I should hear wingmen flying up along side but since I've only stayed at Holiday Inn...I just fly along-happy!
