I would definately do Santa Cruz or Midway. Everyone and their dog does the Doolittle Raid Hornet: Revell's kit, Gearbox toys, the 1/72 model at Pensacola NAS Naval Aviation History Museum. Somebody should do a Hornet with the heroic VT-8 on board (i.e. Midway)

I'm pretty much leaning towards Midway at this point. If this is the case, a dedication towards VT-8 is a very strong possibility. I figure if it does go down that way, represent the Hornet at the time of their launch. If the resources I've read are correct, the torpedo bombers went last. Primarily a TBD launch scene, with a couple of F4Fs and SBDs sitting elsewhere on the deck.

Again, thanks to all for the input. Perhaps I might post some pics of the progress.

I like the VT-8 Tribute myself.

I don't know what was launched first, but it seems that due to the Devestators slow speed, that they would launch first so they could get a head start. The fighter escort would have been able to easily catch up.

That's a greaty point. I'm going off on every single flight op photo I've seen of the Devastator. Hmmm... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif Does anyone know the launch order of that day? It's not listed in the Hornet's action report.

Best thing for you to do would to go to the "Hornet" itself. Although It is the CV-12 the original Hornet's name sake. If I saw your post correctly you live in SF. Hell, man from the stern on the flight deck you can see the Bay Bridge, Treasure Island and SF itself. You could even ask one of the Tour guides there he was a Dive bomber Pilot off the hornet in WWII about load outs. Just look for the oldest guy with a Red hat and Bomber Jacket http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Somebody said that carrier pilots were the best in the world, and they must be or there wouldn't be any of them left alive.

Wow! I totally didn't even think of that! Sad considering I've visited that flattop twice! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

I should go back. It's been over a year since my last visit, and I know they were restoring a TBF.

By the by, if anyone could tell me how to post photos, it'd be much appreciated. The basics of the kit up to flight deck level and two Devastators are done

MAJOR WARNING: For those who are entertaining purchasing a Trumpeter 1/350 scale carrier, the planes themselves have over a dozen pieces apiece, and some truly TINY ones at that!

Just an update for those interested - the Hornet is proceeding well. Per the results of the poll, she shall be showcased as during the Battle of Midway. For the time being, I have chosen to depict the moment that Torpedo 8 commenced their launch (the alternate plan is Fighting 8 as a whole, her entire strike package of 60 Wilcats, Dauntlesses, and Devastators).

As promised, here's a pic of the model in progress. Plenty of things to do as you see. 20mm's will be the last things to mount as Trumpeter chose not to include gun shields. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

Mind you all, I'm no Heywoood or Vidar... compared to those guys, I'm a amateur. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Quick secondary poll to all. If I do go with the Torpedo 8 tribute, should the TBF contingent be included as well?
