View Full Version : A simple suggestion for the PrintScreen cheat?

I'm not sure what's been done to counter the PrintScreen cheat in the patches to this point but it seems that it's still a bit of a problem out there and still works.

Now I realize that not every instance of having a victim warp out of your line of fire can be attributed to using the PSC and lag happens but some squadmates tested this and it seems to still work. It does seem to depend on the player's machine since the slower it is the longer it takes to render and save the bitmap onto the harddrive, and the more delay in letting packets with positional data out to the server. I'm no expert but I understand FB is client-based netcode as opposed to server based like FPS games are.

Anyway, a simple solution to all this might be to simply have the PrintScreen key always report to the server when it's pressed. Perhaps it could display a message to all saying something like:

"Pilot1 took a screenshot"

That way anyone could still take a screenshot if they like but if it becomes more than a few right when they're evading it would be a bit more suspicious. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

What do you think?

Good Point!

I don' think we really need to add more bits to send to the servers, but I do think there are other solutions for this problem.

Other Sims have simply restricted the amount of screenshots per second which really helped alot, but I would rather see it setup so it could be a server option to either allow, or forbid screenshots. We have the ability to record tracks, so why not record a track then review it and take a screenshot then if you desired to do so.

just my 2 cents

dp sorry.

Sure, but this way it's kind of self-policing which is nice. I don't think sending a couple bits indicating a key press would be noticeable but I could live with your suggestion well enough. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Within reason, high pings do not cause warping in this game. While high speed internet connections do help you host, they are not needed just to play the game. It is ping variance, and not high pings that are involved in this cheat. If you attend to shutting down your internet accessed programs like MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger etc. and get rid of the spyware and stop automatic updates, your ping, even on 26KB per second dial-up will not get you kicked even at these settings in the hosts conf.ini file...

[MaxLag]
farMaxLagTime=6.0
nearMaxLagTime=2.0
cheaterWarningDelay=1.0
cheaterWarningNum=1

and it will help fight the cheaters. Honest players will work to steady their pings. Willfully ignorant and cheaters will whine! No print screen reporting needed here.

Those are relaxed settings Lucky...

[MaxLag]
farMaxLagTime=3.0

That will get you kicked with PrintScreen http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks for the update CrazyDude, I'm headed for the conf.ini files right now!

Yes, thanks LuckyBoy1, of course it's important for everyone to use proper host settings but that's a separate issue and doesn't take into account oddball net dropouts that get you kicked from the game unnecessarily. The Acats use fairly aggressive MaxLag settings as it is (although I will check out CrazyIvan's suggestion as well) and every once in a while we'll get kicked for no apparant reason.

Yeah, the thing is it only takes one well-timed PS stab from some asshat on a slow computer to teleport out of the line of fire. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

NOt to throw any more fuel into the fire , haa anyone tested what happens when you record a track online and whether it also contributes to warp effects? I've notices a momentary pause on the screen when I record online. Fixing the PS thingy by self policing may still leave another possible hole for cheaters.

Haven't tried track recording but we tested the PS cheat last (between me and another squadmate) and confirmed it. My squadmate was able to skid sideways clear out of firing range almost at will.

Something really has to be done with this and with consideration to how far along the expansion pack programming is by now I think the easiest solution to implement would be the public message. At least we'll be able to police ourselves this way.

Disable it as an online feature? Track recoring cannot be stopped until refly is hit? who knows maybe these can be implemented?

I was playing online with Mysticpuma yesterday with voice-coms via roger wilco.

We were on the same team with me at his six. He asked me to watch his aircraft while he pressed quick-record. It jumped/warped about 2 plane lengths to the right. That confirms to me that it could be used for ill purposes.

I think the simplest answer rather than messages on screen saying 'xxxx has pressed record' or 'xxxxx has pressed printscreen' would be an auto-kick feature that boots a player if they press either quick-record or printscreen more than 3 times in succession in a 5 second period.

Why would anyone press these keys in rapid succession other than for cheating purposes?

I'm aware that other things can cause lag/warping but it seems these two features can also...

If this were implemented and you were chasing somebodies six, after putting a few tracers past them, they suddenly dissapeared you would know why... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Just done a test on a game I just hosted. I wasn't online long enough for people to join.

It appears you can spam both printscreen and quick-record.

I pressed printscreen repeatedly which resulted in a pause server-side each time it was pressed but not all the screens were recorded.

Quick-record was able to record tracks at a rate of 3 tracks a second by pressing it rapidly, and I know this causes warp as I indicated in my previous post.
I had a slight pause each time I pressed quick-record. This would be longer on a full server, because skins would also be saved in the track file causing more HDD write time.

A kick for for people using these keys in rapid succession is the answer Oleg and team, or a 5 second time-out for printscreen and quick-record to eliminate spamming.

Just keep the printscreen cheat... the cheaters can damage their hard drive that way... what a great self punition for being lame.
