My CRT monitor is beginning to wig out and I am thinking of going with an LCD flat monitor but I have heard in the past that refresh rates were inferior to CRT's. What's been your experience? Thanks.

Yes the newer ones are working just fine.
You do need to check the specs and look for "response time".
It should be less than 20ms to prevent shading.
My LCD 20" have response time at 16 ms and works just great !

My 19" LCD has a refresh rate of 100(came at 60 default, but supports 100) and response time of .25 and it works flawlessly with this game. I've had it for about 8 months with no issues.

I think CRT is still the way to go for gaming . I asume you will be useing it for gameing. Super high refresh rates. Higher end CRTs rock. I just aquired a Sony 21" CPD-G520p and really like it . It was about 700 bucks . I could of got better for more but I think this was a happy medium. I like Sony . I have a 17" sony LCD as well that the 21" replaced.

I have a 700 USD CRT monitor setting on the floor now.. I bought a new LCD monitor and will never go back..

The CRT is dead for gaming IMHO .
The color is great and the speed is just fine.
You have to remember that the scan rate on a LCD is not the same as the scan rate on a CRT. So don't compare them to each other in the way we used to.

YOU won't go wrong by getting one.

TFT's are fine, the days of excuses not the use them are fast running out.

The refresh rates are much better than the old laptops that used to leave mouse pointer trails on the screen.

Plus playing, games on a TFT monitor for hours is far more comfortable to the eyes than a old CRT.

I reccomend the IIYAMA AS4313UT, its perfect for il2 and cheap for the size and performance. It can be difficult to find in the states but it can be done, just make sure its the UT model as the others have a slower refresh rate.

Yeah, really nice going to a LAN meet and then carry a 30.5 kg monitor around.
Besides, the new 20.1" LCD's with 16ms response time are great and end of this month I am going to get one.
Currently I use a 18.1" LCD from LG with 25ms response time and this also works great.
The refresh rates are 75Hz or 85Hz mostly for the 20.1" LCD's.
The colors are more crisp on LCD's and the image is a lot sharper then on a regular CRT.
CRT is dying a slow death at the moment.

I just don't like that you have to sit straight in front of it - makes it hard to see for everyone if you have company & don't want to get to "intimate".

Monson

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

I would so love to dump my 21" Sony CRT for a 20" LCD - My poor old eyes need something a little easier to look at.

I have an old 18 Inch LCD - Might have to see how it fairs and then grab a 20Inch LCD myself.

I know my deskspace would probably increase by a factor of 2 which cant be a bad thing.

Then get one with a better view angle.

I borrowed a 15" KDS LCD monitor from work (I own the company so I do get a few perks!)and hooked it up to my home rig. I was pleasantly surprised to discover no ghosting and very crisp images. The colors and shading were more distinct than on my 17" Dell CRT. I have to agree with the LCD advocates that these monitors are superior. Thanks to all who replied: you motivated me to try this experiment.
