First I'd like to say "Hi" to the community! I've been eyeing the IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles for months now, but last week I decided to bite the bullet and pick it up. I bought the Gold Pack so I would have the Ace Expansion Pack to go with it. I had no idea what I was missing out; my only regret was not picking up the game sooner.

I've been playing around with the game last week offline to get a feel for the sim. I'm primarily a P-47 flyer and it's the plane I feel the most comfortable with right now.

I'd eventually like to move up to the BF-109 series airplanes, but I find the gun sight hard to work with. In the 109, the center of the sight is not shown, only the right half is visible. I end up having to eyeball the shots out the center of the canopy. When I watched the tutorial, the whole sight is visible in the window. If anybody can help remedy this, I'd appreciate it. I can post pictures if need be.

I also tried flying multiplayer earlier today, and so far I like it a lot. I'm used to flying with max realism which isn't what hurt me, but not being able to see the enemy till it was too late. When I fly offline, I have the labels on so it is easier to spot them. I found my self banking left and right in my plane online, scanning the sky for anything, but every time I ended up with a bandit on my tail. I can certainly use some advice (anything) that would help me become a better pilot online.

I look forward to being part of the community and I hope to see you online!

Shift-f1 will also help you keep an eye out for other planes. In addition to providing a gunsight view, it also provides a small amount of head movement which can help you see around struts and things.

For the most part, if you're flying on scripted servers that have objectives, you can expect enemy aircraft to be at those objectives. For example, if red is supposed to bomb tanks and cars at k-8, expect blue fighters at k-8 as well. If you're flying on dogfight servers, there's typically a conveyor belt of airplanes in between the airfields.

Good luck, and glad you found a sim you enjoy.

Check the 'user defined' options in your controls setup section. You'll fnd a lot of useful stuff there. Experiment with these to get a setup that works best for you. These must be separately defined for each pilot name you fly under, so it's possible to fly different setups for different aircraft.
