Sorry guys, the same old question againhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Been without my rig for 5-6 weeks now after a thunderstorm....

Seems that the only thing that was wrecked in my computercrash (besides the Graphics card) was the mother board. Also seems that I will get a new MB for free on my guarantee... (keep your fingers crossed!!!)

In this case I can afford a new Graphic card.... I have put aside a few bucks for fixing the computer... so I have looked on 2:

GeForce 6800 GT 256MB

or

Radeon X800 Pro 256MB

Both approx same price..... now both seems to be great cards, the Radeon with better core clock, the nvidia with more Pipelines and using Vertex shaders 3.0....

I used to have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, I was quite happy with except it made a lot of noise and all these updates freaked me out

any suggestion what to go for ????

If you've read the reviews of the cards, you know that the 6800GT runs a full 16 rendering pipes compared to the X800 Pro's 12. The GT performs almost as well as the 6800 Ultra without the daunting power needs (and it's $100 less).

I found a BFG 6800 GT at BestBuy (had to go brick&mortar) for $399. BFG is OC'd out of the box, and offers the best guarantee in the business: Lifetime replacement.

NOTE: I couldn't run smoothly in Perfect until I doubled my PC 3200 to 1024 MB. Now it runs without a hitch in almost every situation, although there are scenarios where FPS drop below 24 for a moment.

I got a GT from EVGA and I'm very happy with it.

IL2 performance is rock solid. I'm running it @ 10x7 with perfect settings and the framerate's between 40-100 fps (depending of course on what you're looking at). With perfect on, it becomes a bit choppy at 16x12 over the ocean and you can't pick out the dots so a dropped down to 10x7. I run FarCry @ 16x12 with very high settings and get between 35-80 fps, averaging about 42. Doom3 timedemo1 scores 58fps @ 16x12 and high detail.

Now I don't have a Pro, but after looking at dozens of benchmarks, I've rarely seen it out perform a GT at the higher resolutions. Remember also that most GTs can be easily and safely overclocked to Ultra speeds.

The real decision right now is between the X800 XT and the 6800 GT. The XT is hard to find, but it's usually well under the MSRP at around $430. The GT's are very popular and so they're still at, or even over, their MSRP of $400. If you could find an XT for a reasonable price, that might be the way to go.
