nice pics dex! I have got some great shots from some online action last night, but I still need to capture them and find some way of posting them. I've got IL2 manager, so capturing them should be easy, but how does one upload pics to the web? I know this is an oft repeated noob question, but I thought i'd ask....

Below is a higher res (not THE highest) with 16X Fragment Anti-Aliasing. I play in this res offline but online it's not feasible with FB right now so my settings are usually as above.

At the same time, consider this is 3x the info most users see, so lowering some settings is just fine given the immersion gained.

Not very good screenshots. And your attempt at "widescreen" is really the game cutting off the top and bottom of a 4:3. There is no real "widescreen" in FB, that would enable you to see a wider field of view than a 4:3 (example 1024x768). You are actually restricting your field of view. (but then again, people that fly in the cockpit LOVE this)

RBJ, you are completely full of sh!t, and the sooner you admit it the better. You don't have to like the screenshots but the fact remains that this is 3x800x600 and 3x1024x768 with the FOV designed as appropriate. Nothing is getting cut off, I can zoom in more or out further and see a wider view than what you can in your wildest dreams. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it once you're done with the crack and pessimism.

If you sat in front of it for 30 seconds you'd end up speechless for a change.

Anything that doesn't fit within your narrow field of life's perspective is "not very good" when in reality you're just sh!tting on everything you are incapable of understanding.

Regards,
Dex

If you change your resolution to widescreen it will just make a widesreen by making a 4:3 and cutting off the top and bottom.

No, that's if YOU change your resolution. That's what you don't get. There's a flag in FB, "Use3Renders=1" which does not work in your rig. You would instead be setting a wide res and getting it cut off, which is due to a bug in the single-render method of rendering the view.

But then if you looked at the screenshots you would have noticed that.

Well it's obvious that looking at your "widescreen" pics in the cockpit, that a normal resolution would see more up and down field of view. Your cockpit it too cut off on the top and bottom (shorter than normal)

Here you go "Mr Wrong", a single, "Normal" BF109 F4 cockpit fully zoomed out as YOU see it "normally" :

http://www.1stclassproperties.ca/mr/newstuff/fb08.jpg

Here is a 3-render, 3 times as wide, version, also zoomed out fully. This actually looks proper with side monitors turned in as they are over here.

As you can see, there is no vertical loss. Frustrating to explain to you that there's something beyond your comprehension and still not have you believe it.

Dex,

Would it be possible for me to make similar shots if I pause the action, change views and compose the screenshots together? What would be the difference to the shots from your system? I've never worked with multiple monitors.

I am wondering what kind of graphics card you're using. I think I understood from this thread that there is a variable you can set in config.ini that allows a multiple-display output (up to 3?). Your video card then obviously has to be capable of that number of output, unless you have a server and slave configuration like that guy with 13 monitors and 9 computers. I have a GF4 Ti 4200 with dual VGA output, but like RBJ asked, how do you plug in 3 monitors?

Regards,
Mike

As you can see, there is distortion when it crosses over to the next screen. So all this is is a duct tape job of 3 separate views. I'm sure you'll notice the wings look like they point inward. Nice hackzzor job! And maybe when we get cray supercomputers, we can show 3 screens at once. Until then I'll just wait till they support widescreen, and buy a widescreen monitor.

Are you saying that the Matrox Parhalia is a figment of our imagination? Hell SimHQ even did a review on it, it does suffer some performance wise partly because of the huge resolution it's displaying and also because even when it came out it was behind the Ti4600. But it does exist, and many people find that even though they lose performance, the like the view.

Why do I even bother, you are either a complete idiot, or you do this just to make people cranky.

Ray, you might have read over something Dex pointed out already:

<blockquote>Here is a 3-render, 3 times as wide, version, also zoomed out fully. This actually looks proper with side monitors turned in as they are over here.</blockquote>

If you don't stack the monitors right beside each other, similar to a widescreen, then you get for example the left view closer to 90&deg; to the left instead of in the same plane as the center view.

Dex, I guess you're using a Matrox card that has 3x vid output, to answer my own question. If you'd make some more fun screenies that would be great. I'm really enjoying them.

RBJ, look at this page. It's a list of games that support 3 monitor "surround gaming" on the Matrox Parhelia video card.

http://www.matrox.com/mga/3d_gaming/surrgame.cfm

This is a link to the vid card specs:
http://www.matrox.com/mga/products/parhelia/home.cfm

The screenies have distortion at the edges of each of the 3 zones because the one single image is normally displayed on my 3 monitors, and when I take a screenie it outputs one pic of what I see on three at once. It's not a hack, though funny you are to accuse.

I'm really amazed how far you'll deny something that's plainly in front of you but I'm glad that we've finally got you thinking outside the box /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Everytime I look at surround-gaming, I realize that I can live without depth perception (stereoscopic display).

Anyone have 3d glasses? Care to comment? Would you trade 3d glasses for a setup like this?

Hate to burst your bubble (because I am a bubble burster hater) but those resolutions you list are NOT widescreen. they are normal 4:3

Widescreen is 1600x900 (16:9 aspect ratio) and FB DOES NOT SUPPORT IT.

I rather enjoy bursting bubbles.

You is wrong. Your monitor may not support it, but FB does. Just open the config file and start editing. You can set any insane resolution you want, as long as your monitor can do it, and you keep the aspect ratio. The matrox card allows you to increase aspect ratio to 12:3, which is actually more horizontal view than 16:9 (do the math).

Now, as for the previous posters resolutions: you only get normal FOV at wider resolutions. The only way to increase FOV is to use 3 rendors (as mentioned previously), and that requires the Matrox card. You can set wider resolutions, but the FOV is exactly the same as any other resolution. Basicly, you're just stretching the pixels without getting more view.

I really want a matrox card. I really want a sim that leverages its' hardware-terrain features. I really wish people would stop getting erections over FPS and look at truely innovative technology when making purchasing decisions.

You are supporting multiple screens, not widescreen. In case you didn't know, "widescreen" refers to a monitor that is not in the 4:3, but the 16:9 aspect ratio (width:height) And for media, it refers to movies that are shot in this ratio (or near it) as well. You see, it is not a haxxzor job of 3 different views stuck together, it is 1 continuous non-distorted image. And it is specifically meant to nearly fill a widescreen monitor. Sony makes a widescreen CRT for like $1600 and widescreen LCD's are popping up on laptops all over the place nowadays.

The industry will have to adopt widescreen (alot of console games are starting to do it because there are alot of widescreen TV's poping up). And they will adopt widescreen before they have a video card that can do 3 screens at once with respectable frame rates and resolutions.

You're phenominal buddy. First you tell us that until we have Cray Supercomputers we won't be able to use 3 monitors. Then you accuse me of hacking the screens together, now you're telling me that "X isn't the same as my Y definition", just to keep yourself in a position of opposition. Guess what? I can have these kind of debates with my belligerant brother at the family dinners on much more interesting topics.

The Matrox rig allows you to have your entire peripheral surrounded, showing greater than 180 degrees field of view. The nearest "Widescreen" to accomplishing this will be flat, thus defeating the perception of being surrounded.

Add trackIR to this 180 degree view and you end up with 360 degree fov. It's pretty cool for simmers, even if it's not up to your 16:9 definitions, and even if trackIR doesn't respond at 200mhz <-another one of your bullsh!t hypotheses.

Anyways, you're boring me with this widescreen definition crap. Backpedal all you want but we all know you learned something new today, which may be quite an achievement for you. Way to go!

We have to make the jump to true widesceen support before we can buy 3 monitors and have a card that will run them all good.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that I am right.

We've all learned the difference between widescreen support and multiple monitor support. Looks like FB has the latter, but I know for a fact certainly not the former. As we all know set your resolulution to 1600x900 on your desktop and in the FB config file. Then you need to set saveaspect to zero (or it will not render the left and right edges) but even in doing so it will chop off the top and bottom of a 4:3.

True widescreen support is when a person with a widescreen monitor can see more width than a person with a 4:3 (normal monitor). It takes special game coding, which FB does not have (FB will just hack off the top and bottom of a 4:3 and magnify it)

Actually, it's pretty obvious that you're a lot of other things. My screen looks plenty wide and I don't get any top or bottom "chopped off" as you hypothesize, AND I'm running it all on a PC, not a Cray Supercomputer as you previously suggested was required to hook up 3 monitors.

P!ss off already, okay? You're wrong _and_ irritating. Stick to just being irritating or wrong and make it a little easier in the rest of us that possess a higher level of comprehension, and an interest in what is possible with simulators, not what is NOT possible. Geez.

FB doesn't support a muli-monitor aspect ration of 1.73, it only supports 1.33, regardless of how you change resolution in the ini file.

FOV is only increased by increasing the resolution (even if you run it on a parhelia in 3 screen mode), it's an illusion since the size of image is projected on a larger screen.

The problem is that there are VERY few TVs and monitors (and the ones that do are very expensive) that support aspect ratios greater than 1.33 therefore there is no demand for game developers to work more to support this format.

This is not to say that the immersion factor is negligable (when comparing a single monitor) when using multimonitor support for a game.

Nice shot dex-a little jaggy but NICE.

Resolutions I can run:
3840x1024 = 3.75
3840x960 = 4.00
3456x864 = 4.00
3072x768 = 3.00
2400x600 = 4.00
1920x480 = 4.00

Edit - 3840x1024 does not work in FB.

When 3 viewports are used in FB, the FOV is definitely different than what one can render. It ends up being 3x as great a field of view than a single screen

I'm now getting confused about this all. It's quite funny how many angles this discussion has taken /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hate to break it to you guys, but technically, RBJ is right.

That's not to say that multi-monitor support is bad, or somehow inferior to a widescreen mode. It's just a different means to the same end.

The "3renderers" setting means exactly what it says. You're looking at three 4:3 aspect ratio viewpoints side by side. One looking forward, one looking 90 degrees left, and one 90 degrees to the right. Each with the same FOV you'd get from the game with default settings.

If it were true widescreen, you wouldn't see those abrupt transitions between the three frames of the final image. It would, however, still be distorted (ie. the "fish eye" effect, as you'd be getting something like 120 degrees horizontally when zoomed out, projected on a flat surface).

With multimonitors you're getting a good 270 degrees when zoomed out and you can stagger the side monitors at an angle that, effectively, eliminates the distortion relative to the center image.

Your description exactly describes how RealBadJockitch is not correct. He is asserting that 3 render is inferior to a widescreen view for IL2. Just as you say, a widescreen would not give you a better fov than three monitors, it would distort the crap out of the aspect if they tried to do that.

Actually, technically RBJ *is* correct. Widescreen is the term used for a single 16:9 ratio monitor. What we have here is multiple monitors.

However, no-one is denying that this is a damned sight more cool than a single widescreen monitor /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Oh, and seeing as how I am being a little nit-picker, there is one other point I would like to make.

RBJ Said:

-Why is I am consistently smartest person in this forum and -everyone else is so stupid!!!

Technically speaking this should be written either:

"Why is [it that] I am consistently [the] smartest person in this forum and everyone else is so stupid[?]"

or

"Why [am] I consistently [the] smartest person in this forum and everyone else is so stupid[?]"

I have only shown additions, not deletions.

Incidentally, to those of you that have responded to RBJ, YHBT HAND /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

This thread has been a very entertaining exercise in definitions, denial and futility.

Oh, and got confirmation from two sources today that LOMAC is being developed to support surround gaming, as long as nothing unexpected arises as they near completion. Schweet.

Just to further confuse matters, check this out. It's an example of 1 vs 3 viewport rendering, which I believe only Serious Sam and Forgotten Battles currently support. FB unfortunately has a bug in the single viewport version so until the patch it won't be playable.

3 viewports, as you can see, renders a greater field of view and so glancing left/right is showing you a complete screen as though you looked there on a single screen.

IMO 3 viewports is better than any flat widescreen is capable of being.

Serious Sam - single viewport render of 3 screens

http://www.matrox.com/mga/3d_gaming/enhanced_games/media/serioussam_se/800_ssamse1_3.jpg

Serious Sam - rendered through 3 viewports. Clearly, with monitors turned inwards this is much more immersive and realistic.

hmmm, also seems that raybanjockey has gone from saying that the pics were cut off 4:3's to saying the pics were stuck together and all sorts of stuff. i think the guy was confused from the start and won't admit he's wrong. now that we know these are not 'widescreen' per se, but multi monitor maybe we can get on with it eh?

Dexmeister,

Great news about LO:MAC support. I was searching thier forum for the answer to that very question, just last night.

Out of curiousty, what kinds of framerates do you normally get (offline/online)? How about with cockpit turned off?

I think I may be be getting this card for my project, rather than the HMD I was considering. A wider FOV is much more attractive than stereoscopy, in my opinion.

Baldie, it's a tough question to answer because there's so many variables. Some examples:

WITH cockpit on and objects detail set at "Excellent", in 3x1024x768, you can get ~18-30 online, higher offline.

Without cockpit on it's considerably higher but I honestly never fly without cockpit so I've never really benchmarked it. You'd probably looking at min 25 up to 50+ FPS.

Now, if you lower the res to 3x800x600, it's much much faster, probably yielding from 22-40 FPS depending on the complexity of things.

That said, I'm very eager to get the FB patch because in it is supposed to be a FOV fix for the single-viewport configuration, and that type of config requires 1/3 the resources my current setup does, so the FPS could be much better once that is fixed.

Overall, I find the performance of this card to be completely acceptable given the other benefits it offers.

The Parhelia replaced my old GF4 TI 4600, which I recently sold to a buddy when I realized I didn't have any use for it whatsoever. What does that tell you? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Dexmeister,

I get about the same performance with my ti4200, so it would definately be an improvement over my current visual setup.

Since I also fly FS2002, and am seriously considering the eventual purchases found here: http://www.simkits.com/products.php

cockpit-view wont be a necessity all the time /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ( if oleg would support these things i'd give birth to a polka-dot monkey!!).

Stereoscopy just got wiped off my list of toys. Thanks for all your comments on this topic.

Baldie, that's some cool stuff you're planning to use! You know FS2004 (Century of Flight) is coming at the end of July, right? It is expected to support surround gaming. FS2002 has been great for it!

Salute Mister Blissful being for your supreme ignorance must make you the most happy person in the world,

is a publicly well know fact that:
you still dont know:
how to fly,
how to land,
how to use the controls in the plane...
and funny enough..you havent been able to confirm your self proclaimed (and highly autistic)"ace status" with any kind of proof....relax your sfincter , remove your head from your arse and take a deep breath.

are you still stuck on your ridiculous idea on secondary controls?, have no clue about multiple video card/monitor setup/harware usage?..let the people who know about this make the talk, you have no business here.

but the worst of all ( this one requires you to contact your nearest psychiatric institution) you think that you are the only sane and thinking person on the planet....man, that alone is more than enough to put you in the happy house, now step back from the keyboard and take your lithium pills....

I am not sure if this is what RBJ is on about with his "top and bottom cut off comments" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

but .. what I want to know is this ---

IF you use 3 monitors do you actually get a wider view in maximum wide FOV than one monitor.

In other words would I get to see more on each side of me than I would get by hitting pagedown on a single screen ??

Seriously, get over it already. You're taking this way too personally/seriously. You like your card, that's great. Relax and enjoy it.

The last topic on this probably would have turned out better if you hadn't started it the way you did, and changing thread titles after the fact (multiple times) doesn't fool anyone.

All of these chest beating attempts to try and justify it just makes it looks like you don't really believe you made the right choice. If you really were secure in your purchase you wouldn't care if some people didn't like or see the point of your setup.

Oh yah, I'm here to try to reinforce my security in my purchase. Sure...

The fact of the matter is that my original post went off the rails when a bunch of knobs started adding misinformed input into a thread that seriously didn't need nearly as much feedback as it got. I changed the titles to add humour to the situation, since really in my mind the point of the thread was reached when Oleg responded, or more accurately when Oleg responded to Matrox and me elsewhere....

12-40+ (avg ~15-20) in 3072x768 with 4x AA, object details at max, and vis distance at normal if I recall correctly. I can get slightly faster with 2400x600 res, but prefer not to. Also, offline is faster than online....

For comparison, I get faster FPS in CFS3 *gasp* with most settings at 100%, and in FS2004 I get a steady 15-30 (locked it at 30), with occasional slowdowns from clouds, and in FS I have the settings as high as reasonable given that I prefer eye candy over FPS.

3 Monitors, idiot, you put either side of you (Or near enough)

The wings therefore do not look distorted, and being a person who has played on multi-monitor FS2002, I can say that the immersion is VASTLY increased.

RBJ, you're putting yourself way up there as judge of what is good and what is not. Nearly every
post is VERY positive and remember these are your fellow cyber pilots Personally, I"m blown
away with these views and would love to be able to duplicate this with my system. I'll admit
I'm a big time newbie and I know you've been around a long time but your attitude is way off.
Even if you are an "expertene" in the cyber world, it's obvious you're letting pride distort your
view and pride leads to destruction. I can't imagine a true ace of WWII having that kind of
boastful or arrogant attitude toward fellow pilots. instead, I can see Hartman encouraging a
fellow pilot with his accomplishments and in the presence of his peers. Same goes for Bong,
Galland, Preddy, etc.... This senseless bashing seems to be an effort to minimize what is
appreciated by everyone else, what do you stand to gain by doing that? A true leader will
promote the best in others and lead by example. Maybe, like Charles Barkley or Dennis
Rodman...you might say "I'm not a role model" but you post enough on this site and others
are listening. It's a community and a team effort of sorts, even if we're pitted against each
other at times. Being too cocky didn't even work for "Maverick" in Top Gun. To be effective,
he had to become a team player, a good wingman, dependable to his comrades. It would
benefit you and lots of others if you would choose that pattern.

Dex, I don't really know how you did it but this goes way beyond anything I've seen before.
Thanks for sharing...it's like a 3D photo of the real thing. Can't imagine what it's like to
play the game with this set up. How do you ever turn it off? later.

Thanks! Nice picutures by the way.. I saw your wide screen mode shots and thought I would try it out.. But I had a problem.. Keep in mind my eyes are older than most, so I could not see the difference.

So maybe you can help me out? I took two pictures, one wide screen (on the right) and one normal view (on the left). Now I dont see any difference.. but my kids say that the one on the right is much worse looking than the one on the left.. But I pointed out to them that they both have the same uni-brow, the same pink jacket with white trim, the same dentiest, etc.. But the kids sware the one on the right looks much worse.

Anyway, you decide, here are the two pictures side by side of the same thing.

Any ideas how to fix this? My guess, is it has something to do with the ASSpect ratio.. Your thoughts?

I prefer FPS over eye candy. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
(thou my Graphics setting is excellent at 1152*864)

FPS gamers sets their minimum standard at 50~60.

IMHO, Combat simmer needs 30~40 minimum. Below this point, eyes feel stutter.

Again, just my opinion.
