Is the terrain in Russia really as boring as it is in FB and Il-2? I mean it's so dam green.

Sure, there are a few places near villages were you can see some faint farm fields, but wasn't there more of them and in general doesn't the Russian terrain have some differant shades of green, browns, tans etc mixed in here and there?

I know it's a "flight" sim, and it's all about the aircraft, but wouldn't it be nice if Oleg could find some one willing to spruce things up a bit and then include it in a future add-on?

Perhaps a little more of a mix of colors on the summer terrain. Maybe even a late summer, early fall version with more browns tans and yellows, and a "patchy" snow terrain for late fall and late winter/early spring.

I wonder what the BoB terrain will have in store for us?

Just a thought.

Well the BoB terrain is supposed to borrow lots of stuff from what they did for that tank game. Obviously it will be optomized for flight rather than tanks but nontheless it will look alot better.

That said, I think FB's ground looks very convincing. It may be a tad boring but its well done and it never looks bad.

i think the il2 ground we have now is one of the best grounds, compared to other games. looks better than those boring (combat) flight simulator ground textures. different colors in different seasons would be nice, but i personally dont need it. and yes russia has large, boring and wide open spaces of grass.
i wonder what the normandie will bring to us.

anyway, there will be no further changes except from new 3d models in il2, i guess.

East of river Oder there is no "patchy" snow terrain (disregarding the greenhouse effect last years). If it snows, then it snows, and then everything is white you know.

I was always interested in Russia and the location sold IL2 to me unseen, I thought it might be interesting to fly over terrain unknown to me.

I have been looking for pictures that represent the general appearence of Russia but I just can't find anything useful.

Since the terrrain does'nt have many high features to take pictures from all you see is a view to the nearest edge of a wood or the bend in a river, all very picturesque but what's beyond the nearest field is anybodies guess. I do know the rivers often run in much deeper channels than in the game.

If you do find a book or something in the lobrary it's always some geography/wildlife thing and it shows landscapes beyond the Urals or the Arctic.

In Britain there are photos of every square inch of our islands taken from helicopter, so anyone can find out wht it's like without ever coming here, is Russia still secret or do they consider it dull.

Please, please could the IL2 team or other Russians give us an insight into Russia? By all accounts it has'nt seen so much change since tha war compared to many places.

I think the games terrain is fine and real pictures would'nt spoil it for me.

One thing though, why so few churches? I know about the states campagn against the church, but there are still thousands of them especially the large town cathedrals, and even where a village church was abandoned it is often partially standing.

Look for mountain map among online###maps.

It's exciting high and low and beautiful. It means.. it's somewhat boring(for me, it's not) cause it REALLY IS in Russia.

For aerial photos of the Gulf of Finland area, go here:

http://www.fma.fi/virtualboat/suomenlahti/index.html

Just click to the map, and then airplane icons on the map to see the views.

Other pics, general Finnish cities, etc:

I think the terrain in FB looks very good . WAY better than other flight simulators . If your graphics card allows you to view it on "excellent", it looks really good . Not boring at all .
Why do some people gripe and moan about stuff like this ? "Is the terrain in Russia as boring as ....." , just not good enough for ya , huh ?
Jeez !

Well screw you Sturmtrooper. I didn't gripe and moan, I asked a simple question.

If you want to ask a question, then ho about this. Why do ignorant fan boys like you, feel it neccesary to rip someone for asking a question?

these are the mechanics who are specially introduced in working on turbofans. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

no, i guess he means that someone does always defend the product hes fanboy of and ignores its obvisous flaws.

although, i already stated that i dont think the terrain in forgotten battles is that bad.

these pictures of russian are just some corners. not the whole country looks like this, espacially not the western part.

or do you think germany looks everywhere like this:

I like the existing terrains in FB, but i agree with vonJaeger, we also need something in between completely white and frozen water, and completely green. "Patchy" snow terrain would be great, with unfrozen water.

I will say, the colours are just like FB. And is that a Russian cowpath I see there?

I love the cowpaths in FB flat terrain. Makes you just wanna land and bail and run down the path.

btw...FB = FanBoy

Well, let's see: BIG conutry, BIG open areas, LOTS of grass...
Hmm,,,
And I think that russia did not have that "patchy" terrain, because it had plenty of terrain, and all that monoculture and stuff, you see /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I think FB has some of the best scenery as well. keep in mind that.......
1.Boredom was a constant companion of fighter pilots. From what I understand there were hours of boredom...often at extreme temperatures...punctuated by periods of hyperintense, whiteknuckle, adrenaline fed terror.

2.This IS the Russia of 50 or so years ago so what exactly do you expect if not around a city....a MAJOR city at that.

Having said all that... have you tried any other maps other than the ones in the QMB? No flames or disrespect intended.... the Kuban map is nice!! So are the Finland maps. This scenery is top notch to me. At least you dont have a blurry multicolored patchwork on the ground. This scenery in fact is amazingly realistic. I copied some videos onto a CD and took them to work to show them to some folks and they all were completely blown away by the detail of the scenery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I play(ed) Il2 for a couple of months when it first came out. I no longer bother with it.

Graphics are very nice, but game play is crap.
On line play is full of teenies and "know it alls" that would be better in a shoot 'em up, and as far as the game itself goes, how many patches has it had now? I've lost count.

A lot of the people have now jumped onto "Forgotten battles" and the IL2 servers have emptied. They'll do the same when Maddox gets it's "Battle Of Britain" out next year. Complain about everything but still play it in their thousands.

EAW is the RED Baron of the ww2 avaiation sims.
The immersion, careers and online play beat the rest hands down. get the Hi res stuff loaded up and IL2 doesn't come close, other than the fact that you can always fly your own skin....
